1 Grant Applicatin Guidelines The Ruth Mtt Fundatin is a private fundatin based in Flint, Michigan. We believe in cmmunity vitality, which emerges frm safe and vibrant neighbrhds that are hme t healthy, financially secure families and children. T achieve this in ur cmmunity, we are fcusing ur effrts n nrth Flint, the area where we believe ur effrts can make the biggest difference. This apprach, called place-based philanthrpy, has demnstrated that cncentrating n a defined area with significant challenges can result in increased impact. We define nrth Flint as the city limits n the west, nrth and east, and Flushing Rd./5th Ave./Lngway Blvd. t the suth. 2 Our Strategies As we deply the Fundatin s resurces t achieve this impact, we are cmmitted t the fllwing strategies: Finding and fstering place-based interventins, including scial innvatin, and crdinating and leveraging the resurces f ther rganizatins. As a cnvener, we will gather ideas and lessns frm inside and utside the cmmunity, bring rganizatins f all sizes tgether t share slutins and brainstrm abut challenges and build a vibrant future tgether. We als expect grantees will draw n their first-hand knwledge f Flint and prmising practices frm the field as they d their wrk and help us leverage resurces t supprt pprtunities in nrth Flint. Shaping partnerships in service f the gals f nrth Flint residents and in cnsideratin f the Flint Master Plan. A critical element f ur strategy is t invlve the residents f nrth Flint in shaping the slutins we supprt by listening t them, cnnecting with them, and integrating their ideas int ur activities. We want t wrk with grantees wh share this cmmitment. Drawing n Applewd in the nrmal curse f pursuing wrk in the cmmunity, alng with grantmaking and ther Fundatin strategies. Applewd is a welcming place f beauty and cntemplatin where expertise is shared and all peple can cme tgether fr fun and educatinal experiences. Applewd is rted in the Mtt legacy f philanthrpy and embdies the family s cmmitment t Flint. We are pen t grantees ideas abut hw Applewd and its staff expertise can be f help t cmmunity prjects. Aligning peratins, plicies and resurces, investing wisely, and measuring and supprting the advancement f the Strategic Plan. We are cmmitted t tracking ur prgress and making adjustments as needed t make sure ur effrts are making a measurable difference in nrth Flint. As such, grantfunded prgrams and rganizatins will be expected t measure their effrts and reprt n their results. Grantmaking Pririties The Ruth Mtt Fundatin will fcus ur grantmaking n key areas identified by the nrth Flint cmmunity. We held a series f cmmunity frums that engaged mre than 500 peple, mst f whm were nrth Flint residents, t help us understand their pririties. Ging frward, any grants must address yuth, safety, ecnmic pprtunity, r neighbrhds and specifically the themes within them that residents identified as mst imprtant. 3 Gegraphic Fit and Effectiveness T be a strng candidate fr funding, a prpsal must demnstrate bth gegraphic fit (that is, serving residents f nrth Flint) and effectiveness. Effectiveness refers t the ability f the rganizatin t carry ut its prpsed wrk as well as the success f the prject/rganizatin in cntributing t psitive utcmes identified as pririties by nrth Flint residents. Having apprpriate evaluatin measures in place is imprtant t demnstrate effectiveness. Please see ur Thery f Change and Prgram-Level Indicatrs, which list the utcmes and indicatrs fr each pririty area. Prpsals must address ne r mre f these utcmes, identify the prgramlevel indicatrs frm the list that are aligned with yur wrk, and explain hw yu will cllect data fr the selected indicatrs. Grantmaking Tls In additin t cnsidering requests fr ne-year and prject-specific grants, we will strive t maximize grantee capacity thrugh general perating supprt and capacity building grants, multiyear grants that prvide grantees the pprtunity t plan ahead, and capital grants when such tls seem apprpriate and shw prmise fr imprving impact. When warranted, we will als emply matching r challenge grants as tls. Critical t ur success will be pprtunities fr cllective impact t leverage resurces and bring greater cmmunity fcus t an issue. Eligible Applicants Grants are awarded t nn-prfit 501(c)3 rganizatins and t ther qualifying tax-exempt institutins such as schls, units f gvernment, hspitals and religius institutins. We d nt make grants t individuals. If yur rganizatin des nt have 501(c)3 status but wishes t prpse a prject, talk t ne f ur prgram team members t learn abut yur ptins. Preparing a Grant Applicatin Several weeks befre each grant applicatin deadline, we hld infrmatin sessins where staff members prvide updates n the Fundatin s strategic plan and review the grant prpsal prcess. There is als a time fr attendees t ask questins during the sessin and staff are available fllwing the sessin t meet. Please check ur events calendar at fr dates and a registratin link.
