As ur ability t generate, stre and analyze data grws by the day, s d the pprtunities fr using thse data t imprve ur ecnmy, ur security, the envirnment and human health. Scres f prfessinal and research areas are increasingly becming data driven enterprises, and with this transfrmatin cmes a grwing need fr educatin that prvides universal data and cmputatinal literacy. In rder t be effective, the leaders f tmrrw, whether they pursue careers in academia, gvernment, business, industry r ther avenues, will need t understand hw data and data-science are influencing their fields and rganizatins, nw and int the future. Nevertheless, the knwledge needed t enable tmrrw s graduates t meaningfully engage in tday s data-rich wrld will vary by academic backgrund and discipline. Students in Clumbia s Prfessinal Schls will have different needs than undergraduates fllwing the cre-curriculum, fr example, and needs will als vary between the Prfessinal Schls themselves. Jintly funded by Clumbia University s Data Science Institute and Clumbia Entrepreneurship, The Cllabratry@Clumbia is a university-wide prgram dedicated t supprting cllabrative curricula innvatins designed t ensure that all Clumbia University students receive the educatin and training that they need t succeed in tday s data rich wrld. The gal f the Cllabratry Fellws Fund is t supprt innvative curriculum develpment that meets the data and cmputatinal literacy needs f a given discipline, set f disciplines and/r chrt f students at Clumbia University. The prgram will award grants fr pairs f instructrs, ne with disciplinary/ area expertise and ne with data-science and/r cmputatinal expertise, t cllabrate n the develpment and teaching f material that prvides apprpriate data skills (r knwledge) t a targeted set f students using pedaggy, instructin and delivery methds that are fitting fr the specific student chrt. Example curricula fferings might include classes, wrkshps, studis, ut-f-semester fferings and bt-camps. Instructrs may be full-time fficers f instructin, prfessrs f practice, lecturers within discipline and/r adjunct prfessrs. Student chrts can be undergraduate students, PhD students r graduate students underging prfessinal training. Prpsals are welcme frm all Schls at Clumbia University. Because the gal f the Fellws Fund is t supprt data literacy as an imprtant element f a Clumbia University educatin, it is intended that all develped material be integrated int Clumbia s instructinal fferings. What kind f funding is available? All awards will be made n a cmpetitive basis t a pair f instructrs. Each pair f instructrs will receive an award f up t 150,000 t supprt the c-develpment and teaching f the new material. Example uses f award funding might be t buy-ut f teaching in rder t free up time fr the cdevelpment activities, summer salary supprt, supprt fr student assistants and/r n-line curricula cmpnents, the cst f materials, supplies and ther items, etc. Applicants must prvide a budget and budget justificatin as part f their applicatin t the prgram. Prpsals frm mre than tw-instructrs are welcme if a justificatin is prvided, althugh the maximum funding per ffering will remain at 150,000. 1

2 What kinds f prpsals is the Cllabratry s Faculty Fellws Prgram seeking? Successful prpsals will invlve: (i) a well identified need fr the data science and/r cmputatinal training within a Clumbia University department, prgram and/r Prfessinal Schl that is currently nt being met by existing curricula fferings, (ii) a prpsal t fulfill that need using pedaggy, instructin and delivery methds that will be effective fr the learners being targeted, (iii) a pair (r mre) f instructrs that include ne instructr with apprpriate disciplinary expertise and anther with apprpriate data-science and/r cmputatinal expertise, bth f whm are cmmitted t the c-develpment and teaching f the prpsed material, and (iv) a cmmitment by the Dean f the Schl where the prpsed material is t be intrduced, that the material will becme part f the Schl s curricula fferings. Prpsals that invlve ver-haul f existing curricula t meet the demands f tday s data rich wrld are als welcme. Prpsals that demnstrate the ways in which the new ffering has the ptential t cntribute t a wider gal f embedding data literacy acrss all dmains at Clumbia University will be given the greatest cnsideratin. It is anticipated that fur pairs f Fellws will be funded fr this initial cmpetitin (anther cmpetitin will be annunced during the academic year 2016/17). As part f the prgram all Fellws will be expected t attend abut tw meetings per semester t discuss, as an entire grup, their prgress and experience, share the lessns they have learned as well as ideas that might help ensure that all Clumbia University students receive the educatin and training that they need t succeed in tday s data rich wrld. Wh is eligible t apply? Applicatins must be submitted by a pair f instructrs (r mre if justificatin is prvided), each f whm must have the authrity t assume schlarly, administrative, and financial respnsibility fr their individual award. Thse eligible t apply are: full-time fficers f instructin, prfessrs f practice, lecturers within discipline and/r adjunct prfessrs f Clumbia University. At least ne member f the instructinal team must be appinted full-time. All full-time members n the team must hld primary appintments at Clumbia University. What is required t apply fr funds? T be cnsidered fr this cmpetitin, applicatins t the Cllabratry Fellws Prgram must be received by June 27 th, 2016 at 4:00 PM. Ptential Fellws must infrm their Dean f their applicatin t jin the prgram. In develping prpsals and budgets, applicants are required t cnsult with their Dean, r anther apprpriate representative f their Schl, as well as their Department Chair. Fellws are expected t apply as a pair (r mre if justificatin is prvided), t enable evaluatin f the strength f the prpsed crss-disciplinary cllabratin. A cmpleted applicatin must include (in this rder): A cver page (a cver sheet is included at the end f this RFP). Executive Summary (nt t exceed 300 wrds) Budget dcuments Detailed budget and narrative (a budget sheet is included at the end f this RFP). Budget items shuld be listed by expense categry (e.g., travel, materials prductin). 2

3 Prpsal (nt t exceed 5 pages) describing: the need fr need fr the data science and/r cmputatinal training within the unit/ area where the training is being prpsed; a descriptin f the materials t be develped t fulfill that need; the target audience, number f anticipated students that will be impacted, hw students might be selected fr participatin if ffering is utside f nrmal curricula (e.g., bt-camps) a descriptin f hw the materials are t be delivered (curse, wrkshp, n-line, etc.), and what place they will ccupy in Clumbia s instructinal fferings a descriptin f the rles f each instructr an implementatin time-line evaluatin criteria and prpsed evaluatin methdlgy fr understanding the effectiveness f the new materials in meeting their intended instructinal gals any ther infrmatin that supprts the prpsal (including literature cited, etc.) Letters f supprt (required) frm Deans f each Schl invlved, describing their cmmitments Letters f supprt (as apprpriate) frm Department Chair(s) Each instructr s Bi Sketch (nt t exceed 2 pages) Please use a reasnable sized fnt (11 pint r larger), and margin widths (n less than ne inch). Hw will prpsals be reviewed? Prpsals will be reviewed by a cmmittee f faculty representing a range f disciplines and schls, wh will submit the results f their review t the Prvst. The Prvst will make a final recmmendatin n funding t the President. Example evaluatin criteria include: The intellectual rigr and clarity f expressin fr the prpsed activities The apprpriateness f the activities with respect t the targeted student grup and the desired educatin and training experience(s) The quality and feasibility f the budget fr the prpsed activities The likelihd f impact in the target ppulatin(s) and the ptential fr brader impact acrss multiple dmains at Clumbia; The quality f the evaluatin plan What is required f grantees? Cllabratry Fellws receiving awards will be expected t prvide full reprting f funds spent. Unspent funds must be returned after 3 years. As well as the c-develpment f the prpsed materials, Cllabratry Fellws are expected t c-teach the material, which will becme part f Clumbia University s instructinal fferings during the funding perid and beynd. In additin, award recipients will prvide prgress updates and agree t meet as a chrt t discuss as a grup their wn pair s prgress and experience, share lessns learned as well as ideas that might help ensure that all Clumbia University students receive the educatin and training that they need t succeed in tday s data rich wrld.
