1 Pre-Prpsal Applicatin Fr Prductin & Pst-Harvest Research Prjects General Infrmatin Applicatin deadline - June 1st Representatives frm tw industry grups critically review all pre-prpsals. The grups are: (1) The Grwers Cuncil f the Sciety f American Flrists (SAF) and (2) the Prductin & Pst-Harvest Research (PPR) Cmmittee f the Endwment. All Applicants will be ntified f apprval r nn-apprval fr a full prpsal by early Octber. If apprved, a full research prject prpsal will be required in Nvember. If funded, researchers are required t publish nt nly in prfessinal jurnals and ther scientific publicatins but als in industry publicatins. In additin, special research reprts are required at the cnclusin f the prject. Lastly, acknwledgment f funding by the American Flral Endwment funding is required fr all publicatins and presentatins. Applicatin checklist is prvided belw. Applicatin Checklist Each page f the pre-prpsal must be numbered. Applicatins and supprting dcuments must be submitted n later than June 1st - these can be submitted t AFE electrnically (dchedester@afeendwment.rg) in PDF frm. The applicatin must be cmpleted in its entirety using the prvided frm, including the tw-page prject descriptin. Scientists must identify a highly researchable tpic that either is currently r will be relevant t the flricultural industry. A realistic timetable and scientific apprach must be prvided. Inclusin f preliminary data is desired. Literature review must be brief but include relevant research cnducted either dmestically r internatinally. 2 American Flral Endwment Pre-Prpsal Applicatin fr Prductin & Pst-Harvest Research Prjects Due n later than June 1 each year fr the fllwing funding year Intrductin The purpse f this infrmatin is t prvide each applicant with the guidelines fr American Flral Endwment (The Endwment) pre-prpsals fr prductin & pst-harvest research. Pririties f the Endwment Peridically, the Endwment cnducts industry surveys t assist the Bard f Trustees in identifying current and future prblems faced by the flral industry. The feedback helps t fcus funding effrts aimed at slving all industry prblems. The primary research pririties are listed belw. They are fcused n all flricultural crps fresh cut flwers, fresh cut greens, flwering ptted plants, fliage plants and bedding plants. Btrytis Cntrl and Management Thrips Cntrl and Management Pstharvest Technlgy Prductin Technlgy Advanced Breeding Technlgy, including CRISPR The Pre-Prpsal Prcess Prperly prepared pre-prpsals must be submitted n later than June 1. The Grwers Cuncil f SAF will initially review and evaluate them in September. Subsequently, the Prductin & Pst-Harvest Research Cmmittee f the Endwment will cnduct the final review. The Endwment will ntify all scientists f their pre-prpsals status in early Octber. All researchers invited t submit a full prpsal must submit a new full research prpsal frm via . These full prpsals are due in Nvember. Subsequently, the Endwment will cnduct a scientific peer review and make a final decisin by the end f January. Researchers will be ntified f the decisin in February and the final funding decisin will be made in late July based n the availability f funds. Multiple-Year and Team Prjects T accmplish the research gals f the prject, the Endwment funds ne t three year lng prjects. In additin, prjects with either a single researcher r multiple researchers at the same r different institutins are cnsidered. When tw r mre researchers are included, a team leader must be designated t crdinate the implementatin and reprting f the prject. Grants will be paid t each team member and/r institutin separately. Yung Researchers The Bard f Trustees recgnizes the need fr yung researchers t be able t establish their careers in flricultural research. Thus, they give special cnsideratin t these researchers wh submit well-written pre-prpsals and full prpsals that specifically address industry needs. T meet these criteria, the Bard f Trustees urge these researchers t cntact industry representatives prir t develping their pre-prpsals. This will aid identifying researchable prblems. Page 2 f 6
