1 15th Annual Multidisciplinary Cardivascular and Thracic Critical Care Cnference Abstract Submissin Instructins Yu are invited t submit abstracts fr the 15th Annual Multidisciplinary Cardivascular and Thracic Critical Care Cnference t be held in Washingtn, DC, Octber 4-6, Abstracts will be accepted until Friday, June 29, 2018, at 11:59 p.m. Central Daylight Time. All abstracts must describe research related t cardivascular and thracic (CVT) critical care. Each abstract submitted t the Sciety fr pssible presentatin at the CVT Critical Care Cnference must summarize an riginal cntributin and must nt have been presented, published, r accepted fr presentatin r publicatin elsewhere. Manuscripts crrespnding t accepted ral and pster presentatins may be submitted fr publicatin cnsideratin in The Annals f Thracic Surgery, which has a circulatin f apprximately 6,300. Accepted abstracts will be presented as ral presentatins r scientific psters. Please fllw the instructins belw t submit an abstract fr the CVT Critical Care Cnference: Access the nline abstract submissin site. Please nte that yu must cmplete yur submissin in ne sitting; yu will nt be able t save it in draft status. D nt submit multiple submissins fr the same prpsal. Abstract Submissin Specificatins Yur abstract must cnfrm t the fllwing guidelines: Title case: Capitalize the first letter f each main wrd in the title; please d nt enter infrmatin in all upper case r in qutatin marks. All abstracts must be structured using the fllwing sectin headings: Purpse - Include a brief statement n the intent f the study and the current state f research in the field. Specifically, describe the quality gap (limitatin r prblem) within the practice f cardithracic surgery that this research addresses. (50 wrd maximum) Methds - The methds f the study r experimental apprach shuld be clearly and briefly defined. (100 wrd maximum) Results - Prvide a summary f the study findings, including sufficient details, t supprt thse cnclusins. These may be presented in a brief table (n mre than five clumns f data). (150 wrd maximum) Cnclusins - Include a statement cncerning the significance f the wrk and its implicatins fr further research. In what way might the results f this prject supplement r infrm clinical r research knwledge r strategies? (50 wrd maximum) Tables: Up t ne (1) table allwed. The table cannt have mre than five (5) clumns f data. The file shuld be in.jpg,.tif, r.eps frmat. (PwerPint images, Excel, and Wrd Dcuments are nt permitted.) Images: Up t ne (1) image allwed. The presenting authr cannt be an emplyee f a cmpany that develps health care prducts r prvides health care services. Abstracts cannt cntain prduct names; generic terms must be used when describing a single prduct. Abstract develpment and data analysis fr abstracts cannt be perfrmed by industry. The institutin name, state, and address infrmatin f the presenting authr and all cauthrs must be prvided. When percentages are used, the abslute numbers f derivatin must be stated. T ensure fairness, abstracts are read and graded in a blinded fashin with n references t authrs r institutins. Abstracts are reviewed by peer reviewers based n scientific merit, riginality, and practice gaps identified. Presentatins will be 10 minutes, with a 5-minute audience-panel discussin t fllw. Abstract Submissins Only abstracts submitted using the nline system will be cnsidered fr presentatin. Only authrs (and nt their assistants) may cmplete submissins; authrs will be respnsible fr the infrmatin prvided. The submitting authr must prvide accurate addresses f all cauthrs and must attest that (a) all cauthrs f the abstract have granted cnsent fr the material t be submitted fr presentatin, and (b) that the submitting authr has been granted the right by all cauthrs t act n their behalf. Fr the submitted abstract, each cauthr will be asked t cmplete a disclsure frm. STS reserves the right t withdraw any abstract at any time. All abstracts must be submitted and presented in English. If an abstract is nt accepted as an ral presentatin, it may be accepted as a scientific pster presentatin instead. The final determinatin n frmat is at the discretin f the CVT Critical Care Task Frce. The persn listed as the presenting authr fr each abstract must attend the 15th Annual Multidisciplinary Cardivascular and Thracic Critical Care Cnference. In the event that a change f presenting authr must be made after the submissin f the abstract, STS must be ntified in writing. NOTE: The replacement presenter must be a cauthr f the abstract. Once an abstract has been accepted, additinal authrs may nt be added. N abstract will be cnsidered with deferred utcmes data. If data are t be presented, they must appear in the riginal abstract submitted. If there are any questins regarding changes in data after the abstract has been submitted, it is the respnsibility f the presenting authr t ntify STS by at educatin@sts.rg. Industry is nt allwed t perfrm data analysis r develp abstracts, surgical vides, slide presentatins, r scientific psters. Abstract cntent must be based upn the best available evidence and shuld nt prmte any health care device, drug, ther prduct, r service. If the presenter has any relatinship psing a cnflict r ptential cnflict relevant t his r her sessin, he r she may nt make any recmmendatins regarding relevant prducts r services as part f that sessin. If yur abstract is selected, yu will be asked t present it (a) rally during an abstract-based scientific sessin OR (b) at the pster sessin. Yu will receive cmplete infrmatin (including pster dimensins, setup times, etc.) after ntificatin f the CVT Critical Care Task Frce s decisin. CVT Critical Care Task Frce members will review yur abstract, and yu will be ntified f their decisin by end f July 2018.

3 If accepted fr presentatin r display, yur abstract will be printed in the curse syllabus as submitted, s please edit and prfread carefully. Disclsure Infrmatin Cnflict f interest and FDA disclsure is required befre an abstract will be accepted fr cnsideratin. If a ptential cnflict f interest exists, be sure t include the name f the rganizatin/ cmpany and the nature f the ptential cnflict. Each authr must submit her/his individual disclsure when cmpleting the abstract submissin. It is the respnsibility f the submitting authr t identify each cauthr n the abstract. Upn submissin f the abstract, an will be sent t each cauthr, wh will then be respnsible fr submitting her/his individual disclsure. If cmmercial relatinships infrmatin and FDA disclsures are nt received frm all cauthrs by the abstract submissin deadline, the abstract will nt be cnsidered fr review. Fr live presentatins, all relatinships with cmmercial interests and FDA disclsures, as defined in the STS Educatin Disclsure Plicy (belw), must be stated rally t the audience at the beginning f each presentatin. In additin, a slide at the beginning f the PwerPint presentatin must be used t reveal the nature f the disclsure(s). This cmmercial relatinship and FDA disclsure infrmatin will be nted in published materials. Speakers are required t cmmunicate that they have nthing t disclse, if that is the case. Fr scientific pster presentatins, all relatinships with cmmercial interests, must be displayed n each scientific pster alng with any FDA disclsures. Educatin Disclsure Plicy As a spnsr f cntinuing medical educatin accredited by the Accreditatin Cuncil fr Cntinuing Medical Educatin (ACCME), The Sciety f Thracic Surgens requires that any individual wh is in a psitin t cntrl the cntent f an educatinal activity must disclse all relatinships with cmmercial interests (including knwn relatinships f his r her immediate family, department, and partners). The ACCME defines a cmmercial interest as any entity prducing, marketing, reselling, r distributing health care gds r services cnsumed by, r used n, patients. The ACCME des nt cnsider prviders f clinical service directly t patients t be cmmercial interests. The questin f whether a disclsed cnflict situatin culd represent undue influence n the educatinal activity by a cmmercial interest r whether the disclsed infrmatin is sufficient t cnsider an abstract, presentatin, r ther educatinal enduring material t represent ptentially biased infrmatin must be reslved prir t an individual s invlvement in STS educatinal prgramming. Required disclsures include (1) a financial interest f any amunt (e.g., thrugh wnership f stck, stck ptins, r bnds) (2) the receipt f any amunt f cash, gds r services within the current 12-mnth perid (e.g., thrugh research grants, emplyment, cnsulting fees, ryalties, travel, r gifts) r (3) a nnremunerative psitin f influence (e.g., as fficer, directr, trustee r public spkespersn). EXCLUDED frm this disclsure requirement are blind trusts r ther passive investments such as mutual funds. In the case f a financial r ther relatinship disclsure, the cmpany, prduct/service, and specific nature f the relatinship must be nted. Disclsure is mandatry fr any persn invlved in the planning, management, presentatin, and/r evaluatin f STS educatinal activities. Failure t disclse all relatinships with cmmercial interests disqualifies the individual frm being a planning cmmittee member, a teacher, r an authr f educatinal materials, and this individual cannt have any respnsibility fr the develpment, management, presentatin, r evaluatin f STS educatinal activities. This requirement is intended neither t imply any imprpriety f such relatinships nr t prejudice any individual planner, presenter r authr. It is merely t identify such relatinships thrugh full disclsure, and t allw STS

4 t assess and reslve ptential influences n the educatinal activity prir t the planning and implementatin f an educatinal activity. If n relatinships with cmmercial interests exist, the individual must indicate this n the disclsure frm. Additinally, the fact that the presentatin, paper, r ther educatinal prduct describes (a) the use f a device, prduct, r drug that is nt FDA apprved r (b) an ff-label use f an apprved device, prduct, r drug must als be disclsed. This requirement has been adpted in respnse t FDA plicy and case law invlving medical scieties, and is nt intended t prhibit r inhibit independent presentatin r discussin regarding the uses f devices, prducts, and drugs as described in (a) r (b) abve. 5 Plicy n STS Educatinal Activities Other Than the Annual Meeting fr Presenters and Mderatrs Presenters/mderatrs fr STS standalne activities are prvided with time limits fr their presentatins and must cmply with these limits. Each presenter is required t check in at the audi/visual desk at least ne (1) hur prir t his r her presentatin time t lad and test the presentatin slides and/r ther material. T ensure that every presentatin is fair and balanced, as well as free f cmmercial bias, the Wrkfrce n Clinical Educatin s Task Frce n Cnflict f Interest will review presentatin materials (slides and handuts). Fr this reasn presenters must submit presentatin materials t the Sciety at least 2 weeks prir t the actual activity. Slide Presentatin All presentatins must be submitted in English. If slides are used, the first slide (after title slide) must reflect the required disclsure infrmatin. The names f cmmercial prducts cannt be used unless the failure t d s wuld present a patient safety issue. Crprate lgs, clinical trial lgs and lgs f ther meetings cannt be used. Slides, handuts and ther materials utilized as part f an educatinal activity cannt cntain any advertising, trade name, r prduct grup message. N patient identificatin infrmatin can be visible within presentatin materials (e.g., names in ech scans, CT scans, r phts f patients). Additinal Presenter Respnsibilities Presenters/Mderatrs are respnsible fr ensuring that the cntent being presented at the educatinal activity is cnsistent with and des nt vilate anther rganizatin s publicatin guidelines and cnditins. Presenters/Mderatrs are respnsible fr ensuring accurate spelling, punctuatin and grammar prir t submissin. Presentatins must be based upn the best available evidence and shuld nt prmte any health care device, drug, r ther prduct r service. Presenters fund by the Sciety nt t have attempted t utilize the best available evidence, r fund t have prvided cntent that is biased r prmtinal in nature, will nt be allwed t take part in the planning r prvisin f any ther STS educatinal prgram r prduct fr tw years.
