1 2018 ASPEN Nutritin Science and Practice Cnference Mderatr Guidelines On behalf f the American Sciety fr Parenteral and Enteral Nutritin (ASPEN), thank yu fr agreeing t be a mderatr at the 2018 ASPEN Nutritin Science and Practice Cnference. Sessin Mderatrs serve a critical rle thrughut the cnference as it is their respnsibility t frame the sessin cntent, intrduce the speaker(s) and speaker cnflict f interest disclsures, mderate the Q&A, summarize the sessin and identify the key take hme messages while ensuring all sessins run during the alltted time. We hpe that the fllwing infrmatin is helpful in preparing fr this imprtant rle. Belw is a list f items t assist yu as yu plan fr yur mderatr rle at the cnference. Mderatr respnsibilities: Mderatrs are respnsible fr the verall sessin management frm the develpment f materials and crdinatin with speakers t management f attendees and speakers during the live sessin. Mderatrs shuld set the tne f the sessin and are expected t fllw the mderatr script (separate dcument) in additin t the fllwing respnsibilities: assisting the speakers in the develpment f materials at the apprpriate level basic, intermediate r advanced. Basic is like starting at the beginning f the alphabet t prvide the fundatin f infrmatin; intermediate is starting arund letter L in the alphabet the faculty can already assume the fundatin f knwledge is there and begin getting int the meat f the presentatin; advanced is starting tward the end f the alphabet the fundatin and secndary level infrmatin are already knwn. Please nte, all cnference sessins, unless nted as basic skills labs shuld be planned at the advanced learning level. reviewing the speakers slides fr any signs f cmmercial bias prir t the infrmatin being presented setting up the cmputer in the presentatin rm with all presentatins laded and minimized, allwing fr a quick transitin between each speaker attendee management; reminding guests t silence phnes, mving persnal items frm seats fr thers, reminder t cmplete evaluatins etc. (slides and script will be prvided t mderatr t cver these items) intrducing each speaker and prviding the audience with a brief bi f the speaker enfrcing that each presenter state their disclsure infrmatin prir t beginning their presentatin ensuring the speakers stay within the alltted time frame fr their presentatins questining speakers n any cmmercial bias that may have surfaced during the presentatin this shuld be dne in frnt f the audience t demnstrate that the ptential bias is being managed managing the questin and answer sessin and asking thught prvking questins f the speakers as related t the tpic preparing t ask the speakers questins abut the material presented in the event the audience members are a little shy
2 briefly summarizing the key takeaways at the end f the sessin. This shuld als include ideas fr cntinuing the cnversatin n thught prvking ideas discussed during the sessin r ideas fr clinical applicatin r further research. Additinal Infrmatin fr All Speakers and Mderatrs: Yu will be asked t submit a current versin f yur CV (yu nly need t submit yur CV nce if yu are speaking mre than nce). Yu will be asked t disclse any cmmercial relatinships fr each presentatin that yu will be invlved with at the 2018 cnference, this infrmatin is needed fr ASPEN recrds. A relatinship may be relevant fr ne presentatin and nt anther, hence the requirement t disclse fr each presentatin. The Accreditatin Cuncil fr Cntinuing Medical Educatin (ACCME) prhibits prviders frm asking cmmercial entities t suggest tpics r speakers fr educatinal activities, r t review cntent fr accuracy. All requirements listed abve are t ensure ASPEN remains in cmpliance with the varius accrediting bdies t ffer CE credit. Anything submitted prir t the meeting will be made available t registered cnference attendees. Presentatin slides are always requested by attendees t aide them in taking minimal ntes and being able t fcus n the sessin rather than writing. Help us make this an enjyable experience fr all! 3. When preparing yur infrmatin fr yur presentatin, be mindful f the educatinal level f yur tpic. All sessins shuld be presented at the advanced level unless they are basic skills sessins r labs. In planning an advanced level presentatin, faculty shuld assume the audience has the apprpriate knwledge base, therefre there is n need t review things such as basic physilgy that the audience shuld already knw. Faculty shuld assume the fundatin and secndary level f knwledge is there and begin getting int the meat f the presentatin t get the mst ut f their alltted presentatin time while presenting the mst evidence-based cutting edge infrmatin available. 4. Faculty are encuraged t think ut f the bx abut creative ways t help ensure the participants have an understanding f the infrmatin presented that they can return hme with and begin using. ASPEN encurages speakers t identify ways fr the attendee t begin applying the infrmatin t practice while in the sessin wrk thrugh case studies as a grup, having
4 attendees talk with ne anther abut prblems, etc. (anything t engage the learner and make the receipt f the infrmatin applicable t them and their practice). 5. Rehearse yur presentatin! Speakers will have lavalier micrphnes available t them. Feel free t mve arund the stage t engage the audience. Speakers d nt need t cnfine themselves behind a pdium. 6. ASPEN des prvide a laptp in each meeting rm. Yu shuld arrive early t pre-lad yur presentatin nt the laptp. 7. Nte: the laptps available nsite will nly supprt a windws platfrm. Mac users shuld bring their wn laptp and any additinal attachments required (i.e. dngle) t be cnnected t A/V 8. Althugh there is much infrmatin t cver, please d nt g beynd yur alltted time. 9. Visit the meeting rm at least 25 minutes befre the sessin begins t uplad yur presentatin. If yu submit yur presentatin ahead f time, it will be pre-laded in yur sessin rm. Identify the audivisual setup; make sure the apprpriate equipment is available and running prperly. If yu have any prblems r questins, ntify the mderatr r AV technician. 10. All questins need t relate t the sessin bjectives and thus the identified learning/knwledge gap. Questins will be used as an assessment f attendees knwledge prir t and at the cnclusin f the educatin sessin. The questins used pre and pst educatin sessin can be identical, therwise they shuld be similar in nature. Questins shuld appear n slides at the beginning f the presentatin and again at the end f the presentatin. The audience can be plled n site by a shw f hands. Applicable charts, tables r graphs Current references t supprt the verall presentatin. Utilizatin f the current literature t supprt the data/infrmatin being presented shuld be apparent thrughut the presentatin, i.e. references shuld be included n the slides. Additinally, cmplete bibligraphic infrmatin at the end f the presentatin shuld be included. Many sessins cntain several presenters. In rder t ensure each presenter has adequate time t cver their infrmatin, please limit yur cntent. Fr example, if yu are giving a 20 minute talk, yur material shuld include n mre than slides.
