Students that fail t meet the minimum standards lse their eligibility t receive federal and state aid. Federal regulatins als allw the Financial Aid Appeals Cmmittee t extend eligibility t students that fail t meet minimum standards if they can dcument that there were mitigating circumstances beynd their cntrl that caused them t perfrm belw standards. Dcumentatin shuld be submitted with yur appeal t supprt yur statement. Wrking, taking care f children, did nt study, was nt prepared fr cllege, etc. are nt examples f mitigating circumstances. Examples include: medical cnditins that resulted in hspitalizatin fr mre than 10 days, lss f an immediate family member, lss f hme due t fire, strm r natural disaster, illness f student r immediate family member, severe emtinal difficulties, death in the family, lss f emplyment, etc. The mitigating circumstances shuld ccur during the term yu received failing grades and/r withdrew frm classes. Nte: Wrk is nt cnsidered a hardship since financial aid is viewed as a supplement t student s incme in rder t help reduce the number f hurs the average student wuld have t wrk in a given week. Childcare is nt cnsidered a hardship since this wuld have been an issue if yu wrked and befre yu enrlled in classes. It is the respnsibility f the student t successfully cmplete all classes fr which they have Enrlled. Please remember that drpping a class, failing a class, r withdrawing frm a class is a Persnal decisin made by the student. Students n financial aid suspensin shuld nt depend n financial aid t pay fr csts f registratin, but shuld be prepared t pay frm their wn resurces pending the utcme f their financial aid appeal. Appeals submitted withut prper dcumentatin may be DENIED. Incmplete frms will nt be reviewed.
2 SECTION A Suggestins n Writing Yur Appeal Submit yur appeal as sn as pssible. Each semester will have a deadline t submit appeals. A reasn fr appealing wuld be an extenuating circumstance ver which yu had n cntrl and which yu can dcument. The appeal shuld explain in detail the reasn(s) fr nt meeting the standards f prgress. Yur statement fr yur appeal shuld cnsist f tw parts: 1. In Part I, explain hw the circumstances prevented yu frm meeting academic prgress and indicate hw the prblem has been reslved. 2. In Part II, clearly explain hw yu will be able t meet prgress standards in the future. Prvide relevant dates and supprting dcuments frm apprpriate third parties, such as an academic advisr, instructr, dctr, cunselr, clergy, etc. Appeal Categries Mark the circle that represents the reasn fr yur appeal. Read and FOLLOW the instructins. Attach cpies f supprting dcumentatin, statements, r letters t supprt yur Appeal. Include a detailed, written explanatin stating the circumstances f yur appeal. Yu must cmplete this sectin. This is part f yur appeal request. Please check the apprpriate circle and prvide the requested infrmatin in yur statement. Death f an immediate family member (immediate family member is a grandparent, parent, child, spuse, brther r sister). Other relatives such as uncles, aunts and cusins are nt immediate family members. Part I. (CAUSE): Explain hw the persn s death affected yur academic perfrmance. Was this an unexpected death? Did their death ccur during the semester yu fell behind? What rle did yu play in their care? Were yu the primary caregiver fr this persn and what was the reasn yu chse t be the caregiver? Prvide a phtcpy f the death certificate, bituary ntice r letter frm the funeral hme. Include in yur statement the deceased s name and relatinship t yu. Part II. (YOUR SOLUTION): Please explain what yu have dne t reslve the prblem that prevented yu frm successfully cmpleting yur required hurs. Did yu seek cunseling t deal with the death? Did yu make an effrt t make up the deficiencies after this death? What steps have yu taken t ensure yu will cmplete the upcming semester. Illness r injury. Yu, yur spuse, yur dependent children, were injured r ill fr an extended perid f time. Explain at what time the injury r illness ccurred in relatinship t yur enrllment. Part I. (CAUSE): Wh was ill r injured? Hw lng was this persn ill r injured? What were the restrictins, if any? Why was this persn (if this persn was nt yu) unable t care fr his/her self while yu attended classes? Prvide medical recrds, bills r dctr s statement. Prvide names f the peple and their relatinship t yu wh were ill r injured. Part II. (YOUR SOLUTION): What steps have yu taken in case anther illness r injury ccurs t ensure yu will be able t attend yur classes and meet yur academic bligatins fr the semester? Explain yur plans in detail.

As a result, yu have exceeded the maximum allwable semesters as per Piedmnt Cmmunity Cllege s Financial Aid s Standards f Satisfactry Academic Prgress Plicy.
