TROOP 271 High Adventure Plicies Purpse Apprval High-adventure trips can be a terrific way t accmplish many f the bjectives f the By Scuts f America, such as develping leadership, character and utdr skills. Trp 271 high-adventure trips will be designed primarily t achieve these bjectives and shuld prvide incentives fr ur lder scuts t stay active in the trp. a. The trp cmmittee must apprve all high-adventure trips befre: reservatins are made, the trip is annunced t the scuts, any mney is cmmitted. b. Fr each prpsed trip the cmmittee must be infrmed f: The apprximate dates f the trip, A general descriptin f the prgram, Apprximate cst, Estimated size f the grup (scuts and adults). a. The cmmittee will establish the participatin requirements fr each trip. Yuth Participatin a. Participatin in a high-adventure trip is a privilege, nt a right. b. T participate, scuts must meet the criteria established by the cmmittee. c. In additin t thse requirements, scuts must have demnstrated that they are ready t participate in the event. They must have demnstrated sufficient physical ability, emtinal maturity and teamwrk ability fr the activities f the trip. d. The fulfillment f these requirements, and ultimately the participatin f each scut, shall be at the judgment and discretin f the adult leaders f the trip. Adult Leadership Adults wh attend T-271 high-adventure trips will: - Be currently registered as adult leaders with the By Scuts f America, - Have cmpleted Scutmaster/Assistant Scutmaster Leader Training, including Outdr Leader Skills r the equivalent, and Yuth Prtectin Training, - Have CPR certificatin and Basic First Aid training r the equivalent,

2 - Have demnstrated that they are in sufficient physical cnditin fr the requirements f the trip. Parental Ntificatins a. Parents r guardians f participating scuts shall receive written infrmatin regarding: The trip prgram, including travel plans and activities, s that they can understand the ptential risks and hazards invlved, The fees invlved with the trip, payment schedule and the refund plicy, T-271 s yuth participatin requirements, as described abve. b. Parents r guardians f participating scuts will be required t sign permissin slips that include: A waiver f claims against Trp 271, participating adults, and the By Scuts f America. An acknwledgment f their understanding f the inherent risks invlved with the trip, the yuth requirements, and the acceptance f the decisins f the adult leaders. Financial Plicies c. T-271 high-adventure trips shuld be financially self-supprting, i.e. n trp funds shuld be required. BSA Plicies b) The trp may advance mney fr the trip (camp depsits, travel depsits, etc.) but the participants are t repay the trp within tw mnths f this advance. c) Individual scuts seeking financial assistance may talk t the Scutmaster regarding camperships. d) The nature f high-adventure trip csts (such as camp fees and transprtatin expenses) ften d nt allw fr refunds. Refund plicies are t be prvided in writing t participants. e) Fundraisers are encuraged, and must fllw BSA and Detrit Area Cuncil guidelines. f) All mney will be handled by a participating adult with the assistance f a scut. A full financial reprt will be submitted t the Treasurer thrugh the trp cmmittee. T-271 high-adventure trips will fllw all relevant BSA plicies, including: - Filing f prper tur permits, - Rules regarding use f alchl and tbacc,

3 - Water-safety rules, such as safe-swim defense and safety aflat, - Rck climbing and firearms safety, - Limits n the number f daily driving hurs. Trp 271 Plicies fr the High-Adventure Patrl Definitin A patrl f scuts with similar interests in high-adventure {H.A.}activities. Organizatin This patrl will be a sub-set f Trp 271 and subject t all f the trp s rules, regulatins and decisins withut exceptin. All H.A. scuts are expected t participate equally under the guidance f the H. A. Patrl Leader, his assistant, and the H.A. Patrl Advisr(s). Each H.A. member will als remain a member f his current patrl and will participate in trp activities with them unless called ut fr special H.A. events. A scut hlding a leadership psitin within the H.A. patrl may nt hld any ther trp leadership psitin. Membership T be eligible a scut must achieve: a) AGE Be at least 13 years ld b) RANK Achieved at least a First Class Scut rank c) MERIT BADGES First aid Camping d) LEADERSHIP

4 - Have held a trp leadership psitin within the last 18 mnths. e) EXPERIENCE - Attended at least ne lng term (3 nights r mre) camput in the last 24 mnths r, Satisfactrily cmpleted an uting as a guest participant with the H.A. patrl. "Satisfactry cmpletin": A determinatin made by the adult leaders n the uting. "Guest": A scut meeting all ther jining requirements (a,b,c,d,f). f. PAPER WORK - Current (within the last 12 mnths) class 3 (high-adventure) physical evaluatin, - Talent release frm, - Cpy f current medical and dental insurance cards, - Release f liability. Activities This patrl is designed t allw each scut t maximize his scuting career. All patrl members are encuraged t bring frward any ideas fr activities that they may wish t d. These may include activities and destinatins nt available at mnthly camputs r summer camp. An activity may last a few hurs r several weeks and require a high degree f yuth leadership. The H.A. patrl will be canvassed t determine if the patrl desires t pursue the activity. If s, the Patrl Leader will assign patrl members t cmmittees which will assist with planning the activity. If the activity is nt chsen by the H.A. patrl, the scut may still chse t participate in the activity. This will be allwed as lng as all scuting rules are fllwed. The scut will be mentred by the Patrl Advisr and assisted by the Patrl Leader in putting tgether the desired activity. - An example f this wuld be an individual scut participating with anther trp in that trp s high-adventure activity. The scuts in the H.A. patrl are expected t rganize their wn activities UNDER THE GUIDANCE- f the Patrl Leader and Advisr(s). Participatin

5 Each year, the scuts f the H.A. patrl will be required t perfrm a minimum f six hurs f cmmunity service. These hurs can be accmplished with the H.A. patrl r as individuals. These hurs will be tracked by the patrl leader r his assistant, and may be used as a criteria fr activity participatin. Service hurs earned fr ther scuting requirements may be used t meet this requirement als. An eligible scut is nt required t jin the high-adventure patrl. This patrl is fr thse scuts wh wish t d smething beynd the nrmal trp activities. Any scut that jins the H.A. patrl but des nt actively participate will be remved frm the H.A. patrl r suspended frm H.A. activities at the discretin f the trp cmmittee. Any H.A. member that participates nly in H.A. activities and des nt participate in Trp activities will be remved frm the H.A. patrl r suspended frm H.A. activities at the discretin f the trp cmmittee. A scut may petitin the trp cmmittee fr reinstatement int the H.A. patrl. Any scut that des nt meet the jining criteria may petitin the trp cmmittee fr special cnsideratin fr admittance int the patrl. Permissin Slip has permissin t participate in Trp 271 s high-adventure patrl. Release f Liability (initials) I expressly waive all claims against the By Scuts, Trp 271, and any adult leaders r vlunteers, vluntarily and withut inducement in cnnectin with the activities f the high-adventure patrl. Medical Release (initials) With respect t my sn s persnal care and in cnsideratin f benefits t be derived, as my agent, any adult scut leaders, lcal and natinal cuncils, r their representatives, shall have the pwer t make each and every judgment necessary fr the prper and adequate care f my sn. I expressly waive all claims against the By Scuts, Trp 271, and any adult leaders r vlunteers, vluntarily and withut inducement in cnnectin with the activities f the high-adventure patrl. Yu have my medical authrizatin fr his medical care as hereby cnsented t r implied due t an emergency medical cnditin. My sn s medical cnditin is gd unless nted therwise belw. I understand that as a member f the high-adventure patrl, my sn is t be examined by his dctr yearly and is required t turn in a cmpleted class 3 (high-adventure) physical t the Patrl Advisr. Failure t d s may result in his remval frm the patrl. I als understand that the nature f sme high-adventure activities may require certain physical abilities r have certain restrictins that may limit my sn s participatin. I agree t abide by the decisin f Trp 271 as t the participatin requirements f the high-adventure activities. I acknwledge that I am encuraged t attend all Trp 271 cmmittee meetings t express any cncerns I may have and t ffer my input.
