Cmmunity art is valued fr its ability t bring peple tgether in shared, cllabrative, creative experiences t express the things that have meaning t us: where we ve cme frm, where we re ging, ur wrld, ur fears, ur dreams, ur aspiratins. It strengthens the cmmunity, builds identity, develps creativity, and increases awareness f the arts in ur lives. The principles behind cmmunity art prjects are artistic explratin, active participatin and intentinal inclusiveness that allws cmmunities t tell their wn stries. Applicatins must be received by the Edmntn Arts Cuncil (EAC) n r befre the deadline f 11:59 pm n May 1. When May 1 falls n a hliday r weekend, the deadline is the next business day. Incmplete r late applicatins will nt be accepted r cnsidered. Paper applicatins will nly be accepted when the applicant demnstrates barriers t accessing the nline system. T apply n paper, please cntact EAC staff in advance f the deadline. Surce f Funds The Lee Fund fr the Arts Frm 1969 t 2003 the Cliffrd E. Lee Fundatin enhanced the quality f life fr peple living in the Edmntn area. The Lee Fundatin cntinues its cmmitment t supprting the arts thrugh the Lee Fund fr the Arts, a permanent endwment fund. City f Edmntn The City f Edmntn, thrugh the Edmntn Arts Cuncil, als invests in the Cmmunity Arts prgram in rder t imprve the quality f life f the citizens f Edmntn. Purpse The Cmmunity Arts grant prgram invests in the quality f life in ur city by prviding funding fr artistic prjects that are described as cllabratins between an artist and a distinct cmmunity. It recgnizes that art shuld be accessible t all cmmunities in Edmntn. A cmmunity may define themselves by many factrs such as traditin and culture, gegraphic area f the city, r demgraphic characteristics, etc. 1

2 Funds are intended t supprt: an artist (r artist cllective) cllabrating with members f a distinct cmmunity t prduce a prject. (See Appendix A fr detailed descriptins f artist, cmmunity and prject). prjects that take place within the greater Edmntn regin including the City f Edmntn and the Cunties f Sturgen, Parkland, Leduc and Strathcna. Funds will nt nrmally be invested in: capital expenditures, endwments r fundraising curriculum r tuitin-based training prgrams, and research prjects awards ceremnies, galas, trade shws, r similar events activity undertaken prir t the applicatin deadline an rganizatin s perating csts including nging activities and currently emplyed r cntracted staff Arts rganizatins that cnsistently receive Cmmunity Arts prgram funding ver a number f years are encuraged t apply t the EAC Arts Operating grant prgram. Eligibility An applicant can be an individual, an rganizatin, r an infrmal grup lcated in the greater Edmntn regin, including the City f Edmntn and the Cunties f Sturgen, Parkland, Leduc, and Strathcna. They must nt have any utstanding EAC final reprts. An Individual must be: 18 years f age r lder A resident f the greater Edmntn regin fr at least ne year prir t the applicatin deadline* A Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident, r have a valid wrk permit An Organizatin must be: A nn-prfit rganizatin r A charitable rganizatin An Infrmal Grup: May cnsist f an ad-hc r infrmal grup f peple. Examples include artist cllectives and grups that define themselves in terms f a distinct cmmunity. Must have an individual r rganizatin (as defined abve) apply n its behalf. In such cases, the primary applicant must accept respnsibility fr any funds distributed. Must have the majrity f its members residing in the greater Edmntn regin. * *The EAC reserves the right t ask fr prf f greater Edmntn regin residency such as a CRA Ntice f Assessment, current bill frm a utility cmpany (e.g. phne, gas, cable r energy prvider), bank r credit card statement, etc. with an Edmntn and area address current t the date f applicatin. Level f Supprt Funds are usually limited and grants are nt guaranteed. Grants may be awarded t a nrmal maximum f $15,000 in supprt f each prject. Applicants are encuraged t find multiple surces f funds in supprt f these prjects. Assessment A Peer Jury appinted by the Edmntn Arts Cuncil will evaluate all applicatins. This Jury will make recmmendatins t the Bard f Directrs f the Edmntn Arts Cuncil. In sme cases thse recmmendatins may require ratificatin by the City f Edmntn. 2

3 Evaluatin Criteria In making grant recmmendatins, the jury will be guided by all the text in this dcument describing the prgram. In all cases they will als cnsider the fllwing criteria equally: The merit f the prject based n: Artistic frm, cntent, r innvatin Ptential fr invlvement by the cmmunity in the design and implementatin f the prject Benefit t the larger cmmunity (i.e. greater Edmntn regin) Cmmunity factrs based n: Clarity regarding the type f cmmunity and its cmmitment t the prject The barriers facing the cmmunity and the pprtunities the prject prvides fr greater artistic participatin f its members The merit f the artist(s) based n: Current and past artistic wrk, and ability t engage with the cmmunity as demnstrated by past wrk Ptential t bring innvative appraches t the prject The ptential impact f the prject n all cllabratrs (i.e. quality f the experience, grwth in artistic skills r appreciatin, advancement f the artist(s), and benefit frm cllabrative interactin). Administrative factrs such as reasnable planning frm the prject, including a realistic budget and timeline The Edmntn Arts Cuncil encurages jury panels t cnsider the specific cultural cntext f applicatins frm all cultural cmmunities, and in the case f equivalent merits based n the published guidelines, t cnsider the Edmntn Arts Cuncil s gal f reflecting the full demgraphic diversity f the City f Edmntn, befre making grant recmmendatins. Applicatin Prcess and Frmat Applicatins that d nt include all f the fllwing n the nline applicatin will be cnsidered incmplete. Grant Request (this amunt must match the amunt in yur Budget) 3. Declaratin and Signature f Applicant 4. A detailed descriptin f the prject (limit t 4 pages) The bjectives and detailed descriptin f the prject (i.e. the artistic utcmes yu want t create r prduce). The artistic prcess and hw the members f the cmmunity will be invlved in the design and/r implementatin f the prject The nature f the shared participatin between the artist and members f the cmmunity The expected benefit t the artist, members f the cmmunity, and the greater Edmntn regin 5. A prfile f the cmmunity (limit t 2 pages) A descriptin f the cmmunity, its members and the factrs that define it Any barriers that prevent members f the cmmunity frm btaining access t artistic participatin r develpment Backgrund f key individuals and/r participating rganizatins that represent the cmmunity 6. A prfile f the artist (limit t 3 pages) An artistic resume (r resumes) A descriptin f the artist s (r artist cllective s) backgrund and artistic life as it pertains t this prject including experience in cmmunity develpment r utreach 3

4 7. Artistic Supprt Material (10 items r 10 minutes) Up t 10 images, r Up t 10 minutes f vide r audi recrding, r Up t 10 pages f petry r prse text Please limit t a ttal review time f 10 minutes. 8. Budget (limit 2 pages) Revenue prvide a list f the funds yu expect t receive t supprt the prject. This shuld include the grant request (see questin 2 f the applicatin) and if applicable, cntributins frm ther funders r spnsrs, dnatins, fundraisers, in-kind cntributins, etc. Expenses prvide a lst f the csts yu expect t spend in supprt f the prject. This culd include as applicable, artists and persnnel fees, materials and supplies, venue space r equipment rental, in-kind expenses, etc. Make sure that ttal Revenue equals ttal Expenses and that In-Kind revenue and expenses als balance (i.e. equal each ther). 9. Timeline (limit t 1 page) Prject Start Date (mnth and year) Imprtant benchmarks r targets that yu plan t meet at certain stages f the prject. Include the apprximate dates and descriptin f what yu wish t accmplish fr each benchmark. Prject End Date (mnth and year) 10. Letters f Supprt (up t 3 letters) At the discretin f the applicant, prvide up t three letters f supprt. These letters are best received frm cmmunity members f knwledgeable individuals that can cmment n the strength f the prject, cmmunity r artist. Reprting Successful applicants must submit a final reprt within 90 days f the cmpletin date specified n the applicatin, including a summary f the activities and utcmes f the prject and a financial reprt. 5 Appendix A The three cmpnents fr Cmmunity Arts funding are described belw: An artist (r artist cllective). The EAC defines artist as smene wh has cmpleted training, an apprenticeship r a recgnized bdy f wrk in an arts discipline and meets the requirements f ne r mre f the fllwing: Is dedicated t the prfessinal practice f the art, as evidenced by a significant investment f time and resurces Receives payment fr artistic wrk (i.e. artist fees) Has received public expsure, thrugh prfessinal shwings, screenings, publicatin, r perfrmances where selectin was carried ut by an bjective, arm s length bdy such as a jury r publisher Preference is given t artists that are at arms-length frm the cmmunity (i.e. nt currently emplyed r cntracted by the cmmunity). Cmmunity. Members f a distinct cmmunity can be part f an rganizatin r an infrmal grup. The distinct element f the cmmunity may be defined by a multitude f factrs, including but nt limited t: ethn-cultural backgrund, living cnditins, gegraphic lcatin, accessibility, age, beliefs, disabilities, r sci-ecnmic status. This will incrprate EAC s plicy f reflecting Edmntn s full demgraphic diversity recgnizing that sme cmmunities face barriers in accessing artistic pprtunities. Artistic Prject. A prject shuld include creative expressin and cllabrative interactin between the abve partners t prduce a distinct artistic utcme. The prject shuld be beneficial t the artist, cmmunity and Edmntn area. 5
