1 Vancuver Castal Health Cmmunity Fd Security Initiative Prject Funding fr Implementing the Nrth Shre Fd Charter April 2015 December 2016 CALL FOR GARDEN APPLICATIONS Deadline: March 20, 2015 The purpse f this initiative is t increase fd security fr all members f the Nrth Shre cmmunity while specifically wrking t imprve access t healthy fds fr vulnerable grups. New this year: This year, Vancuver Castal Health is ffering small grants that build cmmunity capacity t implement the Nrth Shre Fd Charter. Please nte we will nly fund a few garden initiatives as we want t braden the types f prjects funded. Fd Charter Wrkshp Required In rder t better infrm applicants abut the Nrth Shre Fd Charter, a wrkshp will be held this spring (prbably May). Participatin in the wrkshp is a pre-requisite t applying fr a grant this year. The exceptin is fr thse applying fr a grant related t a garden as we understand yu want t start yur wrk in April. Hw and when d I apply? If yu want t apply fr funding after attending the Nrth Shre Fd Charter wrkshp in May, please use this applicatin frm. We will set a deadline and annunce it as sn as the wrkshp date is set. Fr garden applicatins, submit this applicatin frm by March 20, Sample activities t implement the Nrth Shre Fd Charter: Fd access prjects: edible landscapes, mini- farmers markets, mbile pcket markets, fd buyers clubs and prviding training in grwing, prcessing, handling, cking and preserving f fd. Develpmental activities: building yur grup s capacity t: d fd gardening r creating a fd garden n a cmmunally wned piece f land; Fd security strategies Fd asset mapping, film night, rganizing meal prgrams using rescued fd, using scial media t cnnect peple arund an issue, educatinal prgrams related t fd waste reductin, develping a neighburhd fd security netwrk, pursue a Farm t Schl initiative, develp a prgram t train vlunteers t teach fd skills in the cmmunity, creating a system t re-purpse surplus fd. Cmmunity Fd Security is when all residents btain a safe, culturally acceptable, nutritinally adequate diet thrugh a sustainable fd system that maximizes self-reliance. A fd system includes all the prcesses and infrastructure invlved in feeding a ppulatin: grwing, harvesting, prcessing, packaging, transprting, marketing, cnsumptin, and dispsal f fd and fdrelated items. What is cmmunity capacity? Building cmmunity capacity refers t frming partnerships, interest r wrking grups t acquire sustainable fd skills, resurces and cmmitment t activities that imprve and sustain fd security. What is the Nrth Shre Fd Charter? A Fd Charter is a statement f values and principles t guide decisinmaking related t all aspects f fd. It prvides a visin fr the whle fd system and integrates cmpnents like healthy eating and managing fd waste. These are the principles f the fd charter: Health, Access, & Equity: This pint acknwledges ur interest in prmting access t safe, nutritius fd fr all residents. Envirnmental Respnsibility: Applies t every step f the fd system hw can we reduce waste r reduce GHG emissins related t ur fd system? Gvernment Leadership & Cllabratin: This pint recgnizes that fd crsses jurisdictinal bundaries. The Fd Charter prvides a platfrm fr the fd system t becme a lens that municipalities and residents can use t mve issues frward. Ecnmic Vitality: Fd has value and the Fd Charter encurages us t get the mst lcal value pssible ut f fd in each phase f the fd system frm grwing t buying r selling, cnsuming and managing waste. Cmmunity, Fd culture and educatin: Sharing culture and traditins thrugh fd builds relatinships. We als knw that many residents are very interested in fd skills develpment. 3 ELIGIBLE APPLICANTS Cmmunity nn-prfit rganizatins and frmal and infrmal cmmunity grups (e.g., neighburhd residents, Blckwatch grups, churches, schls, preschls etc.) All applicatins will be cnsidered. APPLICATION PROCESS Cmpletin f the attached prpsal. Prpsals must be received by March 20, Include an utline f yur prject (maximum 4 pages, see attached) and budget. Generally a maximum f $1,500 funding will be available per prject. We have $10,000 t allcate this year. We will review the garden applicatins in the week f March 23. Where else culd I get funding?
