Overview This is a call fr prpsals by the Ryal Academy f Engineering fr research prjects that aim t address issues in engineering educatin As the UK s natinal academy fr engineering, the Ryal Academy f Engineering brings tgether the mst successful and talented engineers frm acrss the engineering sectrs fr a shared purpse: t advance and prmte excellence in engineering. In line with the Strategic Plan the Academy is cmmitted t addressing the engineering skills challenge facing the UK. A key aspect f ur wrk is arund understanding the nature f the skills challenge and seeking slutins t bth increase the quantity f yung peple prgressing twards engineering and imprve the quality f the future engineering wrkfrce. We wuld welcme prpsals fr research prjects n these key areas. We will expect prpsals t be in the range 20-30k but will accept prpsals f a larger sum fr exceptinal prjects that lead t transfrmatinal change. We als expect that the research will be cncluded by March 2018 in line with the Academy s financial year, but again we will cnsider prpsals fr beynd a single year with staged payments. 3 2. Requirements 2.1. Purpse f the prjects The Academy plans t fund a small number f research prjects in engineering educatin in This is an pen call t rganisatins that wrk in engineering educatin research. We are lking fr prpsals that will examine issues arund any f the fllwing areas f ur strategic plan: Addressing issues arund underrepresentatin in engineering Innvatin and structural change in educatin, training, recruitment and retentin f engineers and technicians Transfrming the effectiveness f engagement activities that bring an understanding f and aspiratin fr engineering t yung peple Embedding engineering in schls and clleges and bringing real wrld engineering int all stages f the frmatin f engineers Prmting the imprtance f envirnmental, ecnmic and scial sustainability in engineering practice and educatin All prjects must be fcussed n prducing lessns applicable t engineering educatin in the UK. Cmparisns with educatin in ther areas (subject areas r ther internatinal jurisdictins) are permitted, s lng as utcmes relevant t engineering educatin in the UK are the primary gal Funding Successful research prjects will receive staged payments: 50% will be paid upfrnt 25% will be paid after submissin f a satisfactry interim reprt. The requirements f the interim reprt will be agreed with successful researchers fllwing their appintment. 25% will be paid after submissin f a satisfactry final reprt 3

4 3. Cst breakdwn Researchers shuld prvide an verall cst fr their prpsal. This shuld be brken dwn by categry (e.g. staff; transprt). This shuld include staff csts brken dwn by individual FTE. We will expect prpsals t be in the range 20-30k but will accept exceptinal prpsals f a larger sum that lead t transfrmatinal change. We als expect that the research will be cncluded by March 2018 in line with the Academy s financial year, but again we will cnsider prpsals fr beynd a single year. Csts are allwed fr the direct csts f the prject, including the time f all staff (including academic), and prject management. Indirect r verhead csts are nt eligible. Publicatin csts will be cvered by the Academy. 4

5 4. Submissin guidelines 4.1. Submissins In the interests f cnsistency and t enable an efficient and fair evaluatin, respnses t this call must cver the headings given in bld belw, in the rder specified. Yu may insert sub-headings as desired. We expect submissins t be arund fur sides in length. Researcher infrmatin Applicants shuld state: The name f their rganisatin r cnsrtium. The names, brief bigraphies and any relevant details f each f the key individuals wh wuld wrk n the prject. These can be included within the fur sides r added as an additinal annex. Summary Outline f the prpsal. Prpsal fr research prject Set ut hw yu plan t meet the requirements set ut in Sectin 2 abve and initial prpsals fr the methdlgy t be used. Reference t relevant literature shuld als be included. Timetable Prvide a prpsed timetable f activities and a staged payments sc hedule against key deliverables. Budget Prvide a full budget breakdwn as per Sectin 3. abve. Relevant experience Include details f relevant experience f similar prjects. Annex Any supplementary infrmatin yu wish t prvide Academic publicatin rights The Academy, as the funder, will have rights t publish the final reprt in its standard frmat. Authrs will be acknwledged n the inside cver with brief bigraphies. As a publicly funded bdy, the Academy will als make the reprt available n an pen access basis. The wrk may be used by the authrs t create academic utputs Selectin criteria Prpsals will be reviewed by the Academy s Educatin and Skills Cmmittee (ESC). In selecting the prpsals, the ESC will use the fllwing criteria: Meeting the aims f the Academy s strategic plan fr educatin as listed abve.
