1 Barr Elementary Schl Library Media Center Cllectin Develpment Plan Visin Statement Barr Elementary Schl library will prvide a welcming envirnment that ffers a balanced cllectin t serve the needs f all its users. Missin Statement The missin f Barr Elementary Schl s LMC is t assist in prviding a quality educatin fr every child by: Prviding the schl cmmunity with a wide range f materials n apprpriate levels f difficulty that will encurage grwth and establish a life-lng lve f reading Encuraging lifelng infrmatin literacy and learning thrugh reading and inquiry Prviding an inviting, dynamic envirnment in which students and staff becme learners capable f accessing, evaluatin, applying and sharing infrmatin independently Gals and bjectives The gal f Barr Elementary Schl library is t prmte a lve fr reading that will develp an appreciatin fr bks t becme infrmatin literate and life-lng readers. Barr Elementary Schl Library Media Center strives t prvide patrns with materials that will enrich and supprt the educatinal prgram f the schl. It is the respnsibility f the schl media center t prvide a wide range f materials n different levels f difficulty, with diversity f appeal, and representing different pints f view. The inclusin f any item in a cllectin des nt necessary mean that the media center r schl advcates r endrses the cntents f that item. bjectives The gals f the media specialists are: 1. T teach students t access, evaluate, and use infrmatin. 2. T maintain a well-balanced cllectin f material apprpriate t the needs f the schl. 3. T prvide assistance in lcating and using instructinal materials. 4. T prmte instructin in infrmatin t students and faculty. 5. T prvide planned instructinal materials that will stimulate grwth in factual knwledge and literary appreciatin. Plicies and Prcedures Student Checkut Students in grades first-fifth may check ut library bks. Respnsible students in grades three thrugh five may check ut tw bks at a time. Materials are due back in ne week, r may be renewed fr an additinal week as lng as n student has requested the bk. Special permissin may be granted fr mre materials when necessary. Staff Checkut Faculty may check ut an unlimited amunt f materials fr as lng as needed. All materials must be checked-ut; laptps r items withut barcdes must be signed ut.

2 Reference Materials Reference materials are t be used by students in the library. Teachers may check ut reference materials fr use in the classrm when necessary. Prfessinal Cllectin The teacher resurce area/prfessinal cllectin may be checked ut by staff with unlimited usage but shuld be returned after use s thers may use them. Audi/visual Materials Students are nt allwed t check ut audi visual materials. Teacher may check ut these items fr classrm use. Peridicals Magazines and jurnals are nt t be taken ut f the library by students, but may be checked ut by faculty members. nly current issues f titles are displayed. Back issues must be requested at the circulatin desk. At the end f the schl year, ld issues f student magazines will be given t students. verdue Materials verdue ntices are sent hme peridically. There are n fines fr verdue bks. Lst r Damaged Bks If a bk is lst r damaged, the bk must be paid fr befre additinal bks can be checked ut. The replacement cst f the bk is stated n the verdue ntices. Payment fr a lst bk will be reimbursed shuld the bk is fund r returned in gd cnditin. Students wh we mney t the library fr bk fines will nt receive their final reprt card. Cllectin verview There are mre than 5,600 print and digital items in ur current cllectin Current needs f the cllectin including updating cllectin in all area. The current cllectin age is 18 years with the average cpyright date f Curriculum related materials are in need fr science, technlgy, and histry. We are als in need f mre electrnic databases and updated reference materials. Frmats Included in the Current Cllectin and Needed Bks (fictin and nnfictin) Audibks/CD Peridicals fr reference and leisure nline databases fr research-magnlia Reference bks AR bks Prfessinal titles fr staff members Budgeting Prcedures Each schl year, an allcated amunt f mney is generated by the schl district fr each library based n student enrllment. This amunt varies frm year t year based n available funding and enrllment numbers. The LMS determines hw these funds are allcated int each budget string. The LMS will maintain all receipts and recrds frm each purchase. The librarian may nly purchase material fr the benefit and imprvement f the LMC. The librarian will als develp a prpsed budged based n the needs f the LMC. These needs will be determined by the advcacy cmmittee recmmendatins, student and staff needs assessments, bservatins, cllectin develpment plicy, and autmated reprts. The librarian will submit the prpsed budget t the schl principal fr apprval.

3 Timeline fr Develping Cllectin Year 1: Cntinuusly weed items as needed t update cllectin age Year 2: Acquire mre print resurces, including nn-fictin and reference materials Year 3: Acquire mre digital resurces, including e-bks Cllectin Maintenance Cllectin evaluatin and maintenance is the highest pririty fr the LMS. The library cllectin will underg cntinuus evaluating in rder t keep n target with its missin t ensure students and faculty are effective users f infrmatin by prviding diverse cultural pprtunities fr reading and learning t all f its patrns. Circulatin reprts will be used t determine hw the cllectin is being used and hw it shuld change fr patrn needs. The materials will be assessed fr their physical cnditin and their use. Thrugh these nging methds the librarians will mnitr the cllectin t see that is serving its patrns. Acquisitins Guidelines The needs f the library are based n the knwledge f the curriculum and f the existing cllectin. These needs are given first cnsideratin in the selectin f materials used t enhance the classrm curriculum. Selectin is als based n student and staff survey results, advcacy cmmittee recmmendatins, as well as clse cnsultatin between the librarian and the teachers. Requests fr purchases are always welcme. The librarian is respnsible fr selecting materials and building and maintaining the cllectin. Selectin Criteria The librarian will select resurces in all frmats fr the library, utilizing but nt limited t, the fllwing criteria: Integral t the instructinal gals, curricular, extracurricular prgrams f the schl Apprpriate fr the reading level, understanding, access abilities f students Reflect the creative interests and relevant needs f the students and faculty Warrant inclusin in the cllectin because f literacy, histrical and/r artistic value and merit Present infrmatin with the greatest degree f currency, accuracy and clarity pssible Represent a fair and unbiased presentatin f infrmatin while als representing as many shades f pinin as pssible in rder that varying viewpints are available t students. Extend the walls f the library int the classrms and utside f schl t students, staff, and parents Selectin Tls The librarian cnsults reputable, unbiased, prfessinally prepared review surces such as: The Schl Library Jurnal Hrn Bk Bklist Weeding Guidelines The library s cllectin will cntinually be evaluated in accrdance with curriculum changes, new material frmats, interests and needs f users, and changing instructinal methds. Weeding is essential t maintain a relevant and attractive cllectin. Apprpriate measures will be taken t dispse f discarded materials. Materials will be remved frm the cllectin when items: Are in pr physical cnditin Have lw circulatin statistics Cntain inaccurate infrmatin Cntain bslete subject matter Are superseded by mre current infrmatin Are n lnger needed t supprt the curriculum r student r faculty interests

4 Challenged Materials Plicy Any resident r emplyee f the schl district may frmally challenge library materials used in the district s schl s library prgram n the basis f apprpriateness. This prcedure is fr the purpse f cnsidering the pinins f thse persns in the schls and cmmunity wh are nt directly invlved in the selectin prcess. Challenged materials shuld be brught t the attentin f schl persnnel and tried t be reslved infrmally. If the cmplainant wishes t file a frmal challenge, a cpy f the district Selectin f Library Material Plicy and request fr Recnsideratin f Library Materials frm shuld be handled and mailed t the party cncerned by the librarian r building administratr. Upn receipt f a request fr frmal recnsideratin f library material, the administratr will appint a recnsideratin cmmittee. The cmmittee shall review the challenged material and judge whether it cnfrms t the principles f selectin utlined in the district s Selectin f Materials plicy. Library Bill f Rights The American Library Assciatin affirms that all libraries are frums fr infrmatin and ideas, and that the fllwing basic plicies shuld guide their services. I. Bks and ther library resurces shuld be prvided fr the interest, infrmatin, and enlightenment f all peple f the cmmunity the library serves. Materials shuld nt be excluded because f the rigin, backgrund, r views f thse cntributing t their creatin. II. Libraries shuld prvide materials and infrmatin presenting all pints f view n current and histrical issues. Materials shuld nt be prscribed r remved because f partisan r dctrinal disapprval. III. Libraries shuld challenge censrship in the fulfillment f their respnsibility t prvide infrmatin and enlightenment. IV. Libraries shuld cperate with all persns and grups cncerned with resisting abridgment f free expressin and free access t ideas. V. A persn s right t use a library shuld nt be denied r abridged because f rigin, age, backgrund, r views. VI. Libraries which make exhibit spaces and meeting rms available t the public they serve shuld make such facilities available n an equitable basis, regardless f the beliefs r affiliatins f individuals r grups requesting their use.
