4 Innvatin Zne Tygarts Valley High Schl Language Arts Grades 11 and 12 Objectives: 1. Reduce drp ut rate f students. 2. Increase graduatin rate. 3. Create English electives. 4. Make English mre attractive t students. 5. Cllege English and AP English are unaffected. Prpsal: Currently Tygarts Valley High Schl junir and senir students must take 90 minutes f English per grade level year. There are n elective-style curses. All students regardless f career path r ability are channeled thrugh ne curse each year. English becmes a brick wall f chice and t frequently the deciding factr t quit schl. It is the pinin f the tw English teachers invlved that this can be changed and in the prcess make English curses mre attractive t students. 1. English 11 and 12 as it currently exists wuld be eliminated frm the schedule. 2. The curses that wuld replace English 11 and 12 culd be taken by students in either their junir and senir year. 3. All Cntent Standards wuld remain the same. 4. Students wuld still receive 90 minutes f English each year. 5. Students wuld actually receive mre cncentrated instructin in reading, writing and listening/speaking skills. The plan is t break the current 90-minute class perids int 2 45-minute class perids (still 90 minutes f instructin). The schedules f the tw English teachers wuld need t run cncurrently t allw them the flexibility t mve frm curse t curse if desired t allw them t teach t their strengths. New class names wuld be created fr these classes. Students will take a mix f these curses in their Junir and Senir years, receive an English credit and als better instructin n the Cntent Standards which will all remain the same.

Planning Yrbk/Theater HS English A junir r senir student culd take the newly created Sr. Prject Curse (which wuld be required in either the Junir r Senir year t meet the current cunty requirement t cmplete a Senir Prject) and meet all the current Cntent Standards currently being taught in Junir/Senir English curses that relate t Senir Prjects. A junir r senir student culd take the newly created curse Film & Literature which will cver bth American and British Literature that is currently taught in English 11 and 12. Bth teachers at present teach sme genre-related literature and fllw it with a film and cntent standard based writing assignment. This wuld remain the same and add ther film/literature pieces t be added f the same genre. A junir r senir student culd take the newly created curse Sprts Literature which wuld include a variety f reading genres sprts based that wuld cver independent reading standards as well as incrprate PBL prjects and listening/speaking skills as well as research/writing skills-all part f the current Cntent Standards cvered in English 11 and 12. A junir r senir student culd take the newly create High Schl English curse that wuld be mre applicable t the struggling learner r nncllege bund student. Cntent Standards all remain the same but allws fr adjustment t the English curse curriculum t allw the student nt bund fr cllege t be successful and nt quit schl when English becmes a brick wall.
6 Students wuld be able t chse what curses they wanted with the stipulatin that at sme pint in either the Junir r Senir year that they must take Senir Prject and High Schl r Cllege English. By running the teacher s schedules cncurrently it allws the teachers the flexibility t mve frm curse t curse as well. Fr example the English 11 teacher currently teaches the Research Paper part f the Senir Prject. This culd still happen if they just switch classes and the Senir English teachers mves int Sprts Literature while the Junir English teacher is teaching the Research Paper in Senir Prject. Summary The flexibility f this prpsal makes the students feel like they have a chice in their class selectin. In essence it is simply a matter f repackaging and redistributing exactly what they are currently receiving in English instructin. The suppsitin is twfld: if the students feel like they have a chice then English becmes mre attractive and the creatin f High Schl English pares dwn the current cllege prep English fr the student nt cllege bund. Budget: At the present time it is difficult t determine specific items t be budgeted. Things that wuld definitely be needed are nvels/films fr the classes t be created. Examples f pssible curses t be included in the revised TVHS schedule are Film and Literature and Sprts Fictin. These culd just as easily be Appalachian Authrs and Mystery Writers, r depending n hw many English sessins are scheduled, it culd be all fur tpics. Classrm sets f nvels relative t the curse wuld be necessary alng with film/audi recreatins. The CSO s fr English 11 and 12 wn t change, and s sme materials culd still be taken frm the current texts, but nvels, magazines, films etc. wuld need t be purchased t be added t the literature curses t be created. Als prjected in the prpsal is a curse called Senir Prjects. This curse wuld pull elements frm English 11 and 12 that are currently in place that allw the students t create their Senir Prject Presentatin that nce cmpleted earns them a ½ credit twards graduatin. They are encuraged/required t use technlgy in their presentatin. Sme students are ften uncmfrtable with the equipment because there is limited access t it t allw them practice time with it. A set f laptps with 1 r 2 prjectrs wuld allw them the pprtunity/freedm t prepare and practice with the equipment prir t their presentatin. Any staff develpment r training relevant wuld als be a budgeted item.
