2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and homelessness worldwide and to making adequate, affordable shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat invites people from all faiths and walks of life to work together in partnership, building houses with families in need. Background OCHFH began in 1992 as Rapidan HFH. We worked in a broader service area that covered Orange, Madison, & Culpeper Counties. Now, both Madison and Culpeper have HFH affiliates, so our name was changed to Orange Co. HFH to better reflect our current service area. We are an all volunteer affiliate with a small office in the Orange Presbyterian Church. Impact Our last 2 projects involved Habitat houses that went into foreclosure (1 because of the death of the homeowner, and 1 due to non payment). Habitat has worked to rehab both homes, and are currently seeking qualified partner families to purchase them. We have 1 additional building lot, but are waiting to build on that lot until the other two have been sold. Needs Despite the ability of Habitat for Humanity to attract both willing volunteers and donated materials, there is still a need for money to purchase land, materials and hire licensed tradesmen. Ours is a small, rural county and fundraising is difficult. Land costs continue to go up. Permit costs continue to rise. In order to build one house a year, we need to raise, or have donated, about $80,000. Land will be a huge issue as we go forward. One of our greatest needs is for management volunteers. As an all volunteer affiliate, it is difficult sometimes for volunteers to have enough time to do all that needs to be done to make this mission successful. Funding for a part time Director would be a major goal. CEO/Executive Director Statement OCHFH is one of the few all volunteer affiliates left in Virginia. We are very pleased that we have been able to help 28 families. It takes an incredible amount of work for volunteers to purchase land, find a partner family, provide education and services to that family, raise funds...all before we can even begin to build a house! Board Chair Statement Having been on the Board previously, and now as Board Chair, one of the challenges I see is getting the right volunteers to serve on the Board. There are plenty of people willing to give a day, swing a hammer, or bring lunch to a work crew. There are far fewer people willing or able to give time and energy to the hard work of overseeing the day-to-day work of Habitat for Humanity. Our volunteer Board does it all...we find the land, get the permits, find the family (not an easy process), do the fundraising, build the house, work with the family on homeownership education, work with families who are struggling to keep their mortgage up, loan servicing, escrows for taxes and insurance and anything else you can think of! In addition, there are reports to be done and grants to write. It is a lot of work. So why do all this for no pay? Nothing can compare to the excitement and the anticipation of a ground breaking ceremony, unless it is the deep satisfaction of a dedication service at the end of the build. I've known almost all of the families who are our partners and even knowing all I know about the struggles that some of our families will go through, whether that be illness or loss of employment, or even divorce or death...i still am thrilled in my heart when we start off on a new project. I love how volunteers come together to work for someone they barely know. Habitat does not build "for" someone...we build "with" a family. Ours is a partnership, a building up of our community. We want our children to do well in school and children in Habitat houses generally do have a better school record. We want our children to be healthy, and children in Habitat houses have fewer health issues. They have the stability of knowing where they will sleep at night. One of the first partner families was a woman in her 50s...her children were mostly grown. After she'd been in her house for a few weeks, she commented that it was the first time in her entire life that she had a bed to call her own. I've worked on the Family Selection Committee, and have heard and seen a deep divide between the way I live and the way many others are forced to live. I feel called to do what I can, where I can. 2

6 Percentage Making In-Kind Contributions 100 Number of Full Board Meetings Annually 12 Standing Committees Building Communications / Promotion / Publicity / Public Relations Finance Comments In addition to standing committees listed previously, we have two very active standing committees: Family Selection and Family Support. Both of these are critical to the overall success of the Habitat mission. First, Family Selection has the task of finding a qualified partner family. It is a difficult job. Many want to be Habitat homeowners, but not all can qualify. Family Selection has to assess need, willingness to partner, and ability to repay a mortgage. It is a time-consuming and emotionally difficult job. Family Support is also critical. They provide homeownership education classes, mentoring to families and if there are problems anywhere during the length of the loan, Family Support tries to resolve problems and make sure families can continue to pay their mortgage and stay in good standing. One of our goals is to strengthen the committee structure, add additional members to committees and institute a sharing of committee responsibilities. It is a challenge to find persons willing to take on the big jobs, such as President or Treasurer. In our current system, these are unpaid jobs, and they take a great deal of time and expertise. 6

I have worked on every committee and have a thorough knowledge of the mission and how to make it work. In my professional life, I am a program coordinator for a nonprofit housing organization and can bring much of the knowledge gained there to bear in this Habitat for Humanity mission. Yes 0 Comments Organization Comments One of the challenges of finding Board members for Habitat for Humanity is that most volunteers are more people-oriented than money-oriented. We have a good treasurer, but few of the Board members really understand the financial requirements of HFH. Education of Board members is constant and on-going. Another constant is the education of the general public about our mission. Many people have heard of Habitat for Humanity, but there are also many misconceptions about how it works financially. The public needs to know that houses are sold (not given away) to qualified families. Habitat provides a hand up, not a hand out. 9
