2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission Our mission statement is simple: SERVICE TO VETERANS Background Disabled American Veterans Chapter 3 is totally supported by membership dues and contributions from local companies, individuals and granting bodies. Our parent organization (Disabled American Veterans aka D.A.V.) was established in 1920 by disabled veterans of World War I and Chartered by Congress in The D.A.V. is a nation wide network of services offered free of charge to all veterans and members of their families. The D.A.V. Is a non govermental, nonprofit association of veterans who have suffered some degree of disability while serving in a time of war or armed conflict. The D.A.V. is a nonpolitical organization. We endorse no politcal candidates and we have no P.A.C. s. Our national headquarters are in Cincinati, Ohio and Washington, D.C. Our Tennessee state headquarters is in Nashville, Tennessee. More than 98% of the D.A.V. professional and management staff are disabled in some way. Our focus is to serve veterans and their families. Since so many sick and disabled veterans lack transportation to and from VA mdical facilites for needed treatment, the D.A.V. operates a local and statewide Transportation Network in an effort to meet this need. D.A.V. also helps veterans file claims for VA benefits and refers veterans to D.A.V. National Service Organizations for benefits assistance. Counseling concerning pension, educational and job training programs, compenstion and VA health care is provided. There is a disaster relief fund for disabled veterans affected by natural disasters. Educational scholarships, based on merit, are available for children of disabled veterans who can not afford the cost of higher education. The D.A.V. helps supply volunteers to all VA facilities. Impact Because so many sick and disabled veterans lack transportation to and from VA medical facilities for needed treatment, the D.A.V. operates a nationwide Transportation Network to meet this need. Here are some other ways we make a difference in Tennessee: 1 - Help veterans file claims for VA benefits and refers veterans to D.A.V. National Service Organizations for benefits assistance. 2 - Provide free professional benefits assistance and counseling concerning pension, job training programs, compenstion and VA health care and more. 3 - Through a disaster relief fund, provide for disabled veterans affected by earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, etc. 4 - Serve the unmet information needs of all U.S. military veterans, members of the military currently serving, and their families in Tennessee: active duty, reserve and national guard. 5 - The D.A.V. has volunteers at all VA Facilities. 6 - Offer scholarships, based on merit for children of disabled vets who can not afford the cost. Needs 1) Grants for TN veterans returning from war disabled/injured with transition needs. 2) $5K per year for additional training of members who assist veterans in filing VA paperwork/claims. 3) Keep The Veteran Tribune newspaper operational each year. $12K Printing, $5K Distribution, $6K Website, $8K Newsfeeds. 4) $30K to hire van transportation program drivers to augment volunteer drivers' efforts. 5) $35K for the eventual replacement of the current transportation program van.
