1 Nvember 2018 Plicy n Fees BACKGROUND This plicy prvides fr the fllwing: Cllectin f fees Refundable fees Nnrefundable fees Nnrefundable administrative fees Testing center rescheduling fees POLICY The American Bard f Emergency Medicine (ABEM) charges fees fr services prvided. In specific circumstances determined by ABEM, sme fees may be refundable. When fees are refundable, ABEM will retain an administrative fee t cver prcessing csts. Fees Related t the In-training Examinatin A per resident examinatin fee is due and payable when the residency prgram submits the rster f residents wh will be taking the examinatin. An in-training examinatin fee fr an individual resident is refundable, less a 10 percent administrative fee, prvided the residency prgram submits written ntificatin f the resident s withdrawal dated at least ne business day prir t the administratin f the examinatin. Fees Related t the Certificatin Applicatin An applicatin fee is due and payable when the physician submits a certificatin applicatin. Applicatin fees and applicatin late fees are nnrefundable. Fees Related t the Qualifying Examinatin Apprved applicatins fr certificatin are cnsidered pen. Open and clsed applicatins are defined in the Plicy n Bard Eligibility. A Qualifying Examinatin fee is due and payable at the time f registratin. A Qualifying Examinatin fee, less a 10 percent administrative fee, is refundable under the fllwing circumstances: The candidate cancels his r her examinatin appintment with the testing vendr n later than the day befre his r her examinatin appintment and submits t ABEM a written ntice f withdrawal pstmarked n later than the day befre the last day f the examinatin. The candidate des nt schedule an appintment and submits t ABEM a written ntice f withdrawal n later than the day befre the last day f the examinatin. ABEM excuses the candidate due t illness and, if scring is an ptin, the physician des nt chse t have the examinatin scred and des nt reschedule an appintment in the same examinatin administratin. A Qualifying Examinatin fee is nt refundable under the fllwing circumstances: ABEM remves the candidate frm an examinatin due t disruptive behavir r irregular cnduct. The candidate leaves an examinatin prir t its cmpletin withut being excused by ABEM. The candidate des nt appear fr the scheduled examinatin appintment. The candidate appears mre than 30 minutes late fr the scheduled examinatin appintment. An examinatin rescheduling fee is due each time a candidate reschedules his r her examinatin appintment less than 24 hurs prir t the existing appintment. This includes rescheduling due t illness r failure t appear at the riginally scheduled appintment. Examinatin fees cannt be deferred t anther examinatin administratin. Qualifying Examinatin late fees are nnrefundable. Fees Related t the Oral Certificatin Examinatin An Oral Certificatin Examinatin fee is due and payable when the candidate accepts an examinatin assignment. The Oral Certificatin Examinatin fee, less a 10 percent administrative fee, is refundable under the fllwing circumstances: The candidate submits a written ntice f withdrawal and ABEM receives it at least 14 days befre the candidate s examinatin. ABEM cancels an entire examinatin administratin, an examinatin sessin, r an individual candidate s examinatin, and the affected candidate des nt register fr the rescheduled r next available examinatin. The chief examiner remves the candidate due t illness. An Oral Certificatin Examinatin fee is nt refundable under the fllwing circumstances: ABEM remves the candidate frm an examinatin due t disruptive behavir r irregular cnduct. The candidate leaves an examinatin prir t its cmpletin withut being excused by ABEM. The candidate leaves an examinatin due t illness withut being remved by the chief examiner. If ABEM cancels an Oral Certificatin Examinatin after the sessin begins due t an emergency evacuatin, ABEM cannt ensure a refund f candidates examinatin fees. Examinatin fees cannt be deferred t anther examinatin administratin. Oral Certificatin Examinatin late fees are nnrefundable. ABEM charges a fee if the candidate requests that his r her examinatin be hand scred. Hand-scring fees are nnrefundable. Fees Related t Certificates Diplmates are ntified when their certificates are being mailed. If a diplmate des nt receive his/her certificate, he/she must ntify ABEM within tw mnths after the mail date t have the certificate reissued at n additinal charge. Diplmates wh ntify ABEM f failure t receive a certificate beynd tw mnths after the mail date will be charged the standard certificate replacement fee. If a diplmate s certificate is lst r destryed, r the diplmate s name has changed and he/she wants a certificate with the new name, ABEM will issue a replacement certificate upn written request and justificatin. The certificate replacement fee must accmpany the request. Reissued certificates will indicate that they are replacement certificates. Fees Related t Lifelng Learning and Self-Assessment ABEM charges a registratin fee fr the Lifelng Learning Self Assessment (LLSA) test, due and payable at the time f registratin. Applicatins f candidates wh d nt appear fr an examinatin r fail an examinatin will be changed t a status f pen and inactive. Open, active, clsed, and inactive applicatins are defined in the Plicy n Maintaining Open and Active Subspecialty Certificatin Applicatins, and the Plicy n Maintaining Open and Active Subspecialty Applicatins t Regain Certificatin. Applicatin fees are due and payable upn submissin f the applicatin frm. Applicatin fees are nnrefundable. Examinatin fees are due and payable upn submissin f the applicatin frm, except fr Medical Txiclgy and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) examinatin fees, which are due upn registratin fr the examinatin. ABEM charges a reactivatin fee t candidates with inactive status wh wish t take a subspecialty certificatin, recertificatin, r Maintenance f Certificatin examinatin. Reactivatin fees, including late reactivatin fees, are nnrefundable. Examinatin fees that are paid when the applicatin frm is submitted are refundable in full if ABEM determines that the applicatin des nt meet the eligibility requirements. The examinatin fee, less a 10 percent administrative fee, is refundable under the fllwing circumstances: The candidate cancels his r her examinatin appintment with the testing vendr n later than the day befre his r her examinatin appintment and submits t ABEM a written ntice f withdrawal pstmarked n later than the day befre the last day f the examinatin. ABEM charges a nnrefundable deadline exceptin fee when a candidate is apprved t submit an applicatin after the established applicatin deadline. Examinatin fees are nt refundable under the fllwing circumstances: The candidate is remved frm an examinatin due t disruptive behavir r irregular cnduct The candidate leaves an examinatin prir t its cmpletin withut being excused The candidate des nt appear fr the scheduled examinatin appintment Fr examinatins administered in testing centers, the candidate is mre than 30 minutes late fr his r her scheduled appintment. Fr examinatins administered in testing centers, the bard administering the examinatin may charge a reseating fee if a candidate reschedules an examinatin appintment less than 24 hurs prir t the existing appintment.
