1 EXPERT DIALOGUE ON EFFECTIVE FOLLOW-UP AND REVIEW FOR THE 2030 AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN ASIA AND THE PACIFIC 1-2 December 2016 Public Fyer, Grund Flr, United Natins Cnference Centre (UNCC) Bangkk, Thailand Backgrund An effective, systematic and transparent fllw-up and review framewrk is critical fr ensuring implementatin f the ambitius 2030 Agenda fr Sustainable Develpment. 1 Fllw-up and review fr the 2030 Agenda refers, in brief, t the prcesses and activities that cntribute t mnitring prgress n the sustainable develpment gals, the review f prgress, and the identificatin f respnse r fllw-up actins t further prgress n the gals. Fllw-up and review will take place thrugh different kinds f activities and with the lead f different kinds f stakehlders at the natinal, sub-reginal, reginal and glbal levels. 2 Effective fllw-up and review faces several challenges, including a lack f shared understanding f what it entails, lack f experience, institutinal capacity, including statistical systems, and the need t invlve diverse, and undefined stakehlders. Based n the principles n fllw-up and review described in the Future We Want and the 2030 Agenda fr Sustainable Develpment, and the reprt f the UN Secretary-General n fllw-up and review 3, this expert dialgue is being held in the cntext f the ESCAP SDG Week t share experiences and perspectives and t develp guidance n gd practice fr fllw-up and review at the natinal level and reginal fllw-up and review that can effectively supprt natinal and glbal prcesses. 1 This is recgnized by the 2030 Agenda, the Future We Want and related UN General Assembly reslutins, that all make reference t fllw-up and review, including at the reginal level. The General Assembly reslutin 70/299 which was adpted in July 2016 prvides guidance n fllw-up and review. 2 At the glbal level, vluntary natinal reviews are presented at the High-level Plitical Frum n Sustainable Develpment (HLPF). Fr the Asia and the Pacific regin, member States have agreed that the Asia-Pacific Frum n Sustainable Develpment (APFSD) may serve as a platfrm fr fllw up and review. At the subreginal level there are several initiatives n fllw-up and review, including the develpment f reginal 2030 indicatrs by the Pacific Islands; At the natinal level, vluntary natinal review are expected t be prepared and natinal fllw up and review t be cnducted using a fully participatry apprach and diverse frms and surces f infrmatin and data. 3 A/70/684.
