St. Jseph Hwy, Ste 300, Lansing, MI Phne ; ipep@ipep.rg Cntinuing Prfessinal Develpment and Recertificatin Guidelines The purpse f this prgram is t ensure cntinuing prfessinal develpment and enhancement f the Qualified Envirnmental Prfessinal's (QEP) skills thrughut his r her active career. Recertificatin is the QEP's cntinuing pledge t prtect the delicate balance between envirnmental stewardship and the efficient use f ur limited natural and financial resurces. QEP recertificatin is evidence f a prcess f cntinuing prfessinal develpment and cntributins and service t the prfessin and cmmunity that can include sme r all f the fllwing: Reaffirmatin f cmmitment t the QEP Cde f Cnduct Onging prfessinal service in the envirnmental prfessin Membership and active participatin in apprved prfessinal scieties r rganizatins Publicatin in recgnized jurnals Dcumented 1 participatin in: Technical meetings Prfessinal seminars and/r shrt curses Teaching f recgnized academic curses at the secndary, cllege r University level as an adjunct t the QEP's prfessinal service The EPI prgram as a mentr Wrking cmmittees f envirnmentally-related prfessinal scieties r rganizatins Certificatin in ther areas related t the envirnmental field (see Appendix A) All QEPs must apply fr recertificatin every five years. QEPs have 60 days after their recertificatin date t submit the cmpleted applicatin and accmpanying dcumentatin. The applicatin may be fund at The fllwing statement will be a part f the IPEP Recertificatin Applicatin and must be signed, dated and submitted with the apprpriate recertificatin fees: "I certify that I have been actively engaged in the envirnmental and/r related sciences fr at least three f the last five years and I affirm that I have abided by and will cntinue t abide by the ethical principles set frth in Article II f the IPEP Bylaws, i.e., I will: Practice my prfessin nly t the extent f my persnal expertise; Maintain my persnal prficiency thrugh cntinuing educatin and prfessinal develpment; Cmply with applicable statutes, regulatins, and standards; Strive t prtect and enhance human health and the envirnment; Cntribute t the develpment f ther prfessinals; and Cnduct my prfessinal affairs in a manner that reflects the highest mral character. 2 Recertificatin is based upn a "Cntinued Prfessinal Develpment Qualificatin" rating system f prfessinal develpment hurs (PDH) f credit granted fr the activities belw. The IPEP Recertificatin and Cntinuing Prfessinal Develpment Cmmittee cntinually evaluate the rating system and makes apprpriate recmmendatins t the Bard f Trustees fr changes theret. The fllwing are the current PDH credits fr thse activities that may be used fr recertificatin: I. Cntributins and Service t the Prfessin & Cmmunity: a. Envirnmentally related shrt curses (Greater than r equal t 1 day in length, maximum 6 pints per year)... 3 g. Envirnmentally related seminars (Less than 1 day in length) (1 pint per seminar)... 1 h. Attendance at Emplyer s seminar r training prgram (1 pint per event, maximum f 3 events per year)... 3 i. New (riginal) certificatin in an area related t the envirnmental field (see Appendix A) [May nly be used if the new certificatin ccurred subsequent t attainment f the QEP certificatin and during the five years previus t the current recertificatin]... 5 The ttal number f PDHs required fr recertificatin is 50, which may be accrued ver the entire five years, in any fashin, prvided that a minimum f 10 PDHs are accrued in Sectin I and 20 PDHs are accrued in Sectin II. QEPs wh have allwed their certificatin t lapse may reapply via the recertificatin pathway prvided that their lapsed certificatin time des nt exceed tw years and they have fulfilled at least 60% f the PDH requirements fr recertificatin. Recertificatin will be decided by the IPEP Bard f Trustees after cnsidering the recmmendatin f the recertificatin cmmittee. QEPs whse lapsed certificatin time exceeds tw years are required t re-apply using the nrmal prcedures that apply t anyne seeking the QEP certificatin. 4 FOOTNOTES: 1 Crrect and cmplete dcumentatin is crucial t substantiating the claimed credits f a recertifying QEP. QEPs shuld maintain and rutinely update a dcumentatin file t substantiate each claim fr recertificatin credit. This effrt will avid ptential difficulty in recvering dcumentatin lng after the ccurrence f an activity wrthy f PDH credit. Receipts f fees paid fr attendance at seminars r assciatin meetings, certificates f attendance at curses, r letters f appreciatin fr services rendered (e.g. prctring a QEP exam) are examples f acceptable dcumentatin. When in dubt f the usability f any dcumentatin material, include it with the recertificatin applicatin. The Recertificatin Cmmittee will request clarificatin frm the QEP if there are cncerns abut the dcumentatin submitted. The absence f dcumentatin r n reasnable explanatin f missing dcumentatin is reasn t discunt the claim. Statements like "I tk varius curses at varius times ver the last 5 years and claim x PDHs" des nt qualify as dcumentatin! 2 PDH credits are per event per year, except as nted. Fr example, ne exceptin is that a QEP can publish 5 papers in 5 years: therefre, the PDH ttal can equal 25 PDHs ver 5 years; Pr Bn invlvement with tw rganizatins wuld yield 5 PDHs each per year fr the maximum 10 PDHs available. This Pr Bn invlvement must be an invlvement lasting mre than six mnths f the calendar year. If Cntinuing Educatin Credits (CEUs) given fr shrt curses exceed the PDH value nted here, the higher value will be awarded. 3 Any f the rganizatins participating in IPEP qualify, as wuld any natinal r internatinal prfessinal envirnmental rganizatin r sciety such as the American Meterlgical Sciety (AMS), American Sciety fr Quality Cntrl (ASQC), American Sciety fr Testing and Materials (ASTM), Envirnmental Auditing Rundtable (EAR), and any natin's Technical Assistance Grup (TAG) t the Internatinal Organizatin fr Standardizatin's (ISO) Envirnmental Management Systems Standards Cmmittee (ISO 207). Nte that this list is nt all-inclusive. The relevancy f membership in ther rganizatins will be determined by the IPEP Recertificatin Cmmittee and the IPEP Bard f Trustees. If in dubt, submit its dcumentatin fr cnsideratin. 4 One PDH given fr each three classrm hurs taught [maximum f 30 hurs per year = 10 PDHs]. 5 The term Pr Bn (fr this recertificatin prgram) means that the rganizatin(s) with which yur are either invlved r are making presentatins t, is (are) nt paying yu fr yur services (a dinner r lunch is nt cnsidered a payment fr services). If yur prime emplyer allws yu t r asks yu t make yur services available t r t make presentatins t civic rganizatins r schls n cmpany time, fr which yu are paid by yur emplyer, that is still cnsidered Pr Bn fr the purpses f IPEP recertificatin. 6 A QEP is limited t a ttal f 25 PDHs ver 5 years fr this item; i.e., the maximum credit that can be btained is fr publishing 5 papers in the span f 5 years.
