The 1098-T Tuitin Statement is an infrmatinal frm filed with the IRS that assists students and their families in calculating educatinal tax benefits utlined in IRS Publicatin 970. Nte that any students whse qualified tuitin and related charges are entirely waived r paid entirely with schlarships (including stipends) will nt be issued a Frm 1098-T fr An explanatin f each bx is als printed n the back f the 1098-T Tuitin Statement. What is included in Bx 2 f the 1098-T Tuitin Statement? Bx 2 f the 1098-T Tuitin Statement cnsists f qualified charges fr educatinal expenses, including tuitin, curse fees, registratin fees, and matriculatin fees. Qualified charges d nt include insurance, medical expenses, rm and bard, late penalties, transprtatin, and/r persnal living expenses. What is included in Bx 5 f the 1098-T Tuitin Statement? Bx 5 f the 1098-T Tuitin Statement cnsists f schlarships and grants that a student receives during the calendar year. These schlarships and grants culd be called tuitin awards, tuitin fellwships, schlarships, grants, third party spnsrships, stipend payments, stipend fellwships, stipend schlarships, r similar such terms. Nte: starting with the 2016 tax year (and each year ging frward), stipend payment infrmatin disbursed t the student in the calendar year will nw be included in Bx 5 f the 1098-T Tuitin Statement. Why desn t the Bx 5 amunt n my 1098-T match my award letter? Awards may crss tax years since they typically fllw the academic year. The 1098-T is an IRS frm that is cmpleted fr a tax year, running frm January 1 thrugh December 31. Therefre, the amunt n the 1098-T Bx 5 represents the amunt paid within a calendar year, nt what was paid within an academic year. Bx 5 may als include ther schlarships.
