1 Smkeless Stves Prject in Geita, Tanzania 3 rd Prject Reprt Prject Gals The main aims f this prject are t build 140 smkeless stves in seven villages in Geita, t train 70 yuths t build smkeless stves and t increase cmmunity awareness f lcal envirnmental issues, including regeneratin. This prject will directly benefit 140 husehlds in Geita and indirectly benefit a further 20,064 cmmunity members in the Ihanamil ward. Yuths preparing t cnstruct the Mkmbzi 1 Stve whilst listening t a technician Overview f activities t date A feasibility study was cmpleted n the villages in Geita and presented t Plan Tanzania s ffice in May This included the sharing f a Memrandum f Understanding (MU), between Plan and the selected implementing partner GTZ PrBEC (Prgramme fr Basic Energy and Cnservatin). Imprtantly the reprt highlighted a need fr an additinal pilt phase t evaluate the fllwing, befre a full scale rll ut: The design f the best smkeless technlgy (bth stve and ventilatin) and fuel fr use in the stves An awareness prgramme t educate men and wmen n the health and envirnmental benefits f cking n smkeless stves, in rder t imprve adptin and sustainability f the prject

2 Pilt Testing Strategy and Activity Plan On the 26 August, Plan Tanzania and PrBEC rganised a meeting with key partners t discuss the prject strategy and hw t best meet the verall gals f the prgramme. The meeting was held at Plan Tanzania s cnference rm in Geita and was facilitated by Mr A Ndilanha, PrBEC s Natinal Crdinatr. A further five peple attended including; tw representatives frm PrBEC; tw frm Plan Tanzania s Geita Office and a final representative frm Tanzania s Sciety fr Agricultural Educatin and Extensin. The main bjectives f the meeting were t familiarise PrBEC with the prject gals and t agree a strategy fr the pilt testing. The meeting als prvided the pprtunity t present six types f stves fr cnsideratin. These are detailed belw: PrBEC presented the Rcket Stve prtable and fixed. The benefits f this when cmpared with the three stne stves, are n average a 50% fuel saving, when cmpared with three stne stves (existing). They are smkeless and shuld last fr arund 2-3 years if cnstructed well and used crrectly. The materials used in the cnstructin f the PrBEC stves are brick, cement, lime, grg (crushed brick), sand and water. The estimated cst f prducing the Rcket Stve is Tzs 13,000-18,000 ( ). Rcket Stve TaTEDO presented tw types f stve the Mkmbzi 1 and 2 bth fixed types.. The benefits f this when cmpared with the three stne stves are it saves, n average, a 50% fuel saving. They are smkeless and shuld last fr arund 2-3 years if cnstructed well and used crrectly. The materials used in the cnstructin f the Mkmbzi 1 stves are bricks, clay, anthill sil, grass (Mlenda), cw dung, water and ashes. The estimated cst f prducing the stves is between Tzs 3,000-3,500 ( ). The Mkmbzi 2 uses nly sil and therefre nly labur csts need t be taken int accunt at Tzs ( 0.23). Mkmbzi 2 Stve United Natins Develpment Prgramme (UNDP) - PrBEC s Natinal Crdinatr infrmed the meeting that UNDP had previusly supprted the cnstructin f mud stves in Kigma. It was understd that the UNDP had used a mdified versin f the TaTEDO Mkmbzi 2 type stve in Kigma, t meet the cking requirement f the lcal peple. It was therefre agreed t test the technlgy in Geita t, under the free technlgy intrductin scheme. The materials required include clay, anthill sil, slippery grass (Mlenda), cw dung, water and ashes. The estimated cst f the UNDP brand f stve is Tzs ( 0.23), as nly labur csts need t be taken int accunt. Nte in Oct 09: 1GBP = 2, Tzs

3 EAETDN presented the Upesi Stve and Shingela Stve - bth f these stves are prtable and made f clay, which wuld usually be fired using lcal kilns. In additin t clay, this brand f stve requires slippery grass (Mlenda) and water. The cst f creating these stves hasn t been estimated, as it was agreed t buy ready made stves fr pilt testing at Tzs 2,500 ( 1.14). If they were successful during pilt testing, arrangements wuld need t be made t prduce them in the prject area. Please nte that the Shigela Stve is the same design as the Upesi, but larger in size. Prject Activities - August Shigela Stves The meeting f the 26 August recmmended five f the abve brands be intrduced in three selected villages within the prject area, as part f the pilt testing phase. In additinal t this, ten yuths (aged 15-35) per pilt village, wuld be chsen as trainees and these 30 wuld then frm part f the verall 70 selected fr this prgramme. After pilt testing, the villagers will select the type f technlgy that perfrmed the best and this will then be rlled ut t the whle prject area. The strategy recmmended by the meeting als included the fllwing elements: Three prttypes f each f the five technlgies wuld be intrduced in each village, a ttal f stves. The stves used fr pilt testing will nt be included in the ttal number identified fr the verall rll ut. A suitable area t be used as a site fr cmparisn testing (utside f the villages). In this area ne stve f each brand wuld be cnstructed and all stves wuld be f the same size. It was agreed that an evaluatin meeting wuld take place at the cmparisn site, where cking tests wuld be cnducted t cmpare the five stve types. During the cking tests all stves wuld ck the same amunt and type f fd. Participants attending the evaluatin meeting wuld include representatives frm the husehlds with pilt testing stves, representatives frm all seven villages, experts frm prject implementing partners and invited guests. This evaluatin meeting wuld then recmmend the mst suitable stve technlgy fr the rll ut phase. Psters fr each brand wuld be created and displayed during the evaluatin meeting t raise awareness. It was agreed that Plan Tanzania wuld prepare the criteria and circulate the psters.

4 T cnduct awareness raising meetings in all villages fr the pilt testing and rll ut phases. These meetings wuld be rganised by Plan Tanzania. During these meetings the ptential trainees wuld als be selected based n agreed criteria. Sme f the criteria prpsed included: Masnry has cnstructin knwledge and skill Willingness t vlunteer Accepted by the cmmunity Aged years f age Mnitring f the pilt testing wuld be carried ut by Plan Tanzania in cnjunctin with respective partners where required. Recent Activities - September On the 2 nd f September 2009 a meeting with Ihanamil extended Ward Develpment Cmmittee was held. It was during this meeting that the three pilt villages were selected; Mwagimagi, Nyanguku and Bunegezi. Meeting with Ward Develpment Cmmittee Thrughut September awareness raising meetings were scheduled, where Village Executive Officers were tasked t ensure that all village members were made aware f the effects f indr air pllutin and kitchen ventilatin imprvement, with the help f a representative frm the District Medical Office. They were als made aware f ther prject details, including the criteria fr them t select the 30 yuths wh wuld be trained n hw t cnstruct the cmmunity s preferred pilt tested stves. Plan Tanzania drew up the list f selected husehlds and f suitable trainees and the intrductin f the pilt testing tk place in the last tw weeks f September, after all materials were prepared. Fr ten days after the intrductin f the stves, during the drying perid, mnitring will take place and a reprt n the status f the stves will be cmpleted. Between the 27 th and 29 th f September, Plan Tanzania prepared the pilt testing evaluatin criteria and rganised a suitable time fr a meeting t discuss the prgress f the pilt testing phase.

The trainees and their stves will cntinue t be mnitred fr five weeks t ensure all stves are being used prperly, s a fair evaluatin can take place.
