1 INTERNATIONAL CORAL REEF INITIATIVE (ICRI) General Meeting La Réunin, December 2010 ICRI Secretariat infrmal reprt n the Ad Hc Cmmittees ICRI GM 26 Secretariat Paper Over the last years, several ICRI Ad Hc Cmmittees have been created in rder t assist the ICRI secretariat in implementing the ICRI Call t Actin r t wrk n emerging issues. Hwever, fr sme f these Ad Hc cmmittees, the status is currently unknwn. The current secretariat wuld like reslve these issues and did a very shrt review f all these cmmittees. The suggestins belw are suggestins frm the ICRI Secretariat and will be discussed at the ICRI General Meeting The Article 11 f the ICRI Organizatin and management prcedures describes the rle and functins f the Ad Hc Cmmittees. Article 11 - Ad Hc Cmmittees: Ad hc cmmittees may be established t carry ut wrk n specific tpics, prepare reprts r advise n specific issues. Cmmittees are pen t all members and bservers may be invited t jin. The Cmmittee shall elect a Chair frm the members represented in the Cmmittee. Cmmittees will prvide reprts t the Hst secretariat r DAR wh will make them available t the General Meeting. The Terms f Reference f the ad hc cmmittees will be apprved by the ICRI membership and shall include the duratin f the ad hc cmmittee. Since January 2008, 10 ICRI Ad Hc Cmmittees have been created, and ne was clsed. Ad Hc cmmittee n the Caribbean Reginal Respnse t Linfish Invasin Purpse: Facilitate a crdinated respnse t the Linfish invasin in the Caribbean regin, by establishing a reginal strategy fcusing in particular n cntrlling the spread f linfish. Ad Hc cmmittee n Cral Reef Assciated Fisheries Purpse: T cmpile infrmatin fr ICRI members abut the imprtance f sustainable management fr cral reef assciated fisheries.

Tw films t raise awareness abut spawning aggregatins using ne f the few knwn and accessible pristine gruper aggregatins in the Pacific. As a fllw-up t the film, research ptins are being pursued t prmte research n spawning aggregatins' (June 2011-French Plynesia). A cmprehensive glbal list f RFMOs has been cnstructed jintly with the IUCN SSC Marine Cnservatin Sub-Cmmittee that will allw fr discussin abut hw we can best engage RFMOs fr cral-reef assciated fisheries in the regin. This cmmittee will be reprting at the ICRI GM26. Ad Hc Cmmittee n the Internatinal Cral Reef Actin Netwrk Purpse: T review the future f ICRAN and prepare ptin papers n the rle and respnsibilities f ICRAN as an ICRI peratinal netwrk, and its gvernance. The cmmittee was tasked t wrk n the rganizatin f a Pacific Day (held at the ICRI GM 25, Apia, Sama). The gvernment f Japan will reprt under reginal activities. Ad Hc cmmittee n Ecnmic Valuatin f Cral Reef Ecsystems Purpse: t prvide infrmatin and supprt t the cral reef cmmunity within this field. Last reprt: ICRI GM 25 (2010, Sama). N decisin was taken regarding the future f this cmmittee. The TR were updated in 2008 at the ICRI GM 22 (Flrida, U.S.A.). Current status: Currently, there is n active discussin between the members f this cmmittee. Prducts: Cntributin t the Marine Ecsystem Services Partnership (MESP) a virtual center fr infrmatin and cmmunicatin n the human uses f marine ecsystem services arund the wrld. Hwever, ICRI is nt recgnized n the website. Ecnmic Values f Cral Reefs, Mangrves, and Seagrasses: A Glbal Cmpilatin Prpsitin f the secretariat: t disslve it, even if WRI r ther ICRI members culd always reprt n this imprtant theme at upcming ICRI meetings. The Ad Hc Cmmittee n Enfrcement & Investigatin Last reprt: ICRI GM 25 (2010, Sama). N decisin was taken cncerning the cmmittee. New TR were adpted at the ICRI Meeting in Phuket (2009) Created: 2005 (GM Palau) Chairs: Dave Gulk Prduct: A tlkit has been develped in English, French and Spanish. Over 14 wrkshps have been rganized.

5 Prpsitin f the secretariat: the ICRI secretariat recgnize all the wrk dne initially by the cmmittee, but have nt been cncerted fr the last 2 years. Fr instance, the Secretariat was nt cnsulted n the change f the hsting institutin. Updates n the wrk n the prject will still be dne at the meetings, but the Secretariat is prpsing t disslve the cmmittee. The Ad Hc cmmittee n Internatinal Year f the Reef (IYOR) was disslved at the ICRI GM held in Thailand (ICRI GM 23, 2009) Suggestins received n the Ad Hc Cmmittees: Make the Ad Hc Cmmittees issue and task-riented and f shrt duratin s that members f these cmmittee feel there is a cncrete deliverable fr which they are respnsible and beginning and an end t their invlvement n the Cmmittee. T have sme clear tasks fr the cmmittee with clear deliverables, and timeline. If pssible, it wuld als be useful if a funding arrangement t facilitate the wrk f the cmmittees culd be explred in advance f the final frmatin
