Res. Asis. Dr. Gulcin Dinc Yalcin ENM102 Introduction to Industrial Engineering Project Management
What is a project?
What is a project?(cont.) According to Project Management Institue: A project is a temporary endeavour undertaken to create a "unique" product or service.
Characteristics of a project
Characteristics of a project It is concerned about performing the job tasks correctly it is temporary - it has a beginning and an end it is "unique" in some way Any mistakes are costly to rectify
Characteristics of a project A project is comprised of many tasks or activities. The activities of a project has precedence relationship. activities (tasks/jobs) - where each activity has an associated duration or completion time (i.e. the time from the start of the activity to its finish) precedence relationships - which govern the order in which we may perform the activities, e.g. in a project concerned with building a house the activity "erect all four walls" must be finished before the activity "put roof on" can start
Examples of projects
Examples of projects Building the Egyptian pyramids was a project, as was building the Great Wall of China. Most people consider the Manhattan Project to be the first project to use modern project management
Examples of projects (cont.) The development of a new airplane, like the Airbus 380 The development of the new car like the Tesla.
Examples of projects (cont.) Building a football stadium Administrating a large research contract Performing a major transplant surgery Establishing a production line Earning a college diploma Raising a child Etc.
Methods
Methods for Project Management Gannt Chart CPM- Critical Path Method PERT- Program Evaluation and Review Technique
CPM
CPM The Critical Path Method is defined in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) as follows: The Critical Path Method is the sequence of scheduled activities that determines the duration of the project. These scheduled activities must be performed if the project is to be considered a success. Moreover, they must be completed in a specific order. The important bit to understand is that the CPM describes the longest sequence of activities in the project. For decreasing the project time, the time of the activities on the critical path should be decreased if possible.
Examples of CPM
Example 1 Activity ID Duration (days) Dependency A 7 B 3 C 6 A D 3 B E 3 D,F F 2 B G 3 C H 2 E,G
The Path STAR T A C G H B D E F
The Path STAR T A C G H B D E F A-C-G-H path duration: =18 B-D-E-H path duration: =11 B-F-E-H path duration: =10
The Path START A C G H B D E F The critical path: A-C-G-H path (duration: =18) So the project is completed in 18 days. For decreasing the project time, the time of the activities on the critical path should be decreased if possible.
Example 2
The Path
path duration: 4 weeks path duration: 2+5+2=9 weeks path duration: 2+2+2=6 weeks path duration: 2+2+1=5 weeks path duration: 5+5+2=12 weeks path duration: 5+2+2=9 weeks path duration: 5+2+1=8 weeks path duration: 5+4+1=10 weeks
The Path The critical path: path duration: 5+5+2=12 weeks So the project is completed in 12 weeks. For decreasing the project time, the time of the activities on the critical path should be decreased if possible.
A Group project about Project Management Make it in a group of 2 or 3 or 4 people. Chose a project in your life Explain the project in a paragraph (25p.). Define the activities, durations and dependency (15p.). Draw the path (15p.). Calculate the critical path (15p.) and give a suggestion about decreasing the project time (15p.). Write in a report (in English) format by using MS Word etc. (report layout: 15p.) Write the contribution of each group member by percentage. If two or more asignments are the same with each other, then the grade will be "0". Mail the assignments to gdinc@eskisehir.edu.tr until 4 January 2019 Friday at 23:59. Send only one file named as like enm102_project_surname1_surname2_surname3 Late assignments are not accepted.
