Planning in Project Planning Terminology

Planning in Project Definitions.: Project: A temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. Program: A group of related projects managed in a coordinated way. Activity (Task): A component of work performed during the course of a project. Milestone: A significant event in the project, usually completion of a major deliverable. Baseline: The original approved plan (for project, a work package, or an activity). Float (Slack, Total Float): The amount of time that an activity may be delayed from its early start without delaying the project finish date. Free Float (FF): The amount of time that an activity can be delayed without delaying the early start of any immediately following activities. Critical Path: The series of activities that determines the duration of the project.

Planning in Project Definitions Cont.: Master Schedule: A summary level schedule that identifies the major activities and key milestones. Network Logic: The collection of activity dependencies that makes up a project network. Network Path: Any continuous series of connected activities in a project network diagram. Path: A set of sequentially connected activities in a project network diagram. Crashing: Taking action to decrease the total project duration after analyzing a number of alternatives to determine how to get the maximum duration compression for the least cost. Resource Planning: Determining what resources (people, equipment, materials) are needed in what quantities to perform project activities. Risk: An uncertain event or condition that, if it occurs, has a positive or negative effect on a project's objectives. Scope: The sum of the products and services to be provided as a project. Work Breakdown Structure (WBS): A deliverable-oriented grouping of project elements that organizes and defines the total work scope of the project. Each descending level represents an increasingly detailed definition of the project work.

Planning in Project Network Logic q Predecessor: An activity that must be completed (or be partially completed) before a specified activity can begin is called a predecessor. q Successor: An activity whose start or finish depends on the start or finish of a predecessor activity. q Duration: Duration is the length of time needed to complete an activity. The time length can be determined by user input or resource usage. Activities with no duration are called Milestones. q Calendars: Lists time intervals in which activities or resources can or cannot be scheduled. q Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT): PERT is a project management technique for determining how much time a project needs before it is completed. Each activity is assigned a best, worst, and most probable completion time estimate. These estimates are used to determine the average completion time. The average times are used to figure the critical path and the standard deviation of completion times for the entire project.

Planning in Project Logical Relationships: A dependency between two project activities, or between a project activity and a milestone. The four possible types of logical relationships are: Ø Finish-to-Start Ø Start-to-Start Ø Finish-to-Finish Ø Start-to-Finish (discouraged)
