2 YESTERDAY IN THE INTERNATIONAL MARKETS Global Ticker Daily Change U.S. Stocks Rally to Two Week High; Europe Gains U.S. stocks rallied, with the Standard & Poor s 500 Index closing at its highest level in more than two weeks, as retail sales data showed a resilient consumer before the Federal Reserve decides on Thursday whether to raise interest rates. The S&P 500 gained 1.3 percent to 1, at 4 p.m. in New York, its highest since Aug. 28. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added points, or 1.4 percent, to 16, The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 1.1 percent. About 5.9 billion shares traded hands on U.S. exchanges, about 18 percent below the three-month average. European stocks climbed, led by gains in carmakers and energy producers, after worse-than-forecast data signalled weakness in the U.S. recovery ahead of a Federal Reserve rate decision. S&P % Dow Jones +1.40% NASDAQ +1.14% Stoxx % FTSE % Dax % Crude Oil +0.83% Gold +0.17% Shares then rose as much as 1.1 percent after U.S. data on retail sales, industrial production and manufacturing in the New York region all missed estimates, two days before the Fed decides whether the U.S. economy is strong enough to withstand its first rate increase since The Stoxx 600 added 0.8 percent at the close of trading, up for the first time in four days.

3 THE ASX YESTERDAY IN REVIEW AUS Ticker Change ASX Falls 1.26%; China Continues to Slide The ASX experienced some selling yesterday with the ASX200 losing 1.26 per cent and the broader ALLORDS losing 1.2 per cent. All the major banks lost ground with Westpac losing the most, down 2.45 per cent. All sectors declined yesterday, with the worst performers being Materials and Financials, losing 1.77 and 1.85 per cent respectively. The best survivor was Staples, losing only 0.69 per cent. China: The Shanghai Composite Index dropped 3.5 percent to 3, at the close, led by commodity producers and technology companies. About 14 stocks declined for each one that rose on the gauge, while volumes were 36 percent below the 30-day average.
