2 YESTERDAY IN THE INTERNATIONAL MARKETS Global Ticker Daily Change US Modest Decline; Stoxx 600 Rebound U.S. stocks fell as concern over slowing growth in China and other developing nations amid a deepening commodities selloff overshadowed improvements in America s housing market. The Standard & Poor s 500 Index fell 0.3 percent to 2, at 4 p.m. in New York. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost points, or 0.2 percent, to 17, About 5.5 billion shares changed hands on U.S. exchanges, 16 percent below the three-month average. European stocks extended a rebound after the worst weekly drop in more than a month, amid signs the U.S. economy is strengthening.. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index added 0.2 percent to at the close of trading, rising higher after data that showed U.S. new-home construction climbed to an almost eight-year high in July. Health-care shares contributed the most to equity gains, with Novo Nordisk A/S and Shire Plc up 1.6 percent or more. S&P % Dow Jones -0.19% Nasdaq -0.64% Stoxx % FTSE % Dax % Crude Oil +1.19% Gold -0.13% NYSE:BABA -1.74% ETR:DTE -0.06% NYSE:MRK -0.08%
3 THE ASX YESTERDAY IN REVIEW AUS Ticker Change ASX Dragged Down by Banks; China Tumbles Declines by all the major banks yesterday dragged down the ASX200, finishing the day down 1.20 per cent. CBA declined the most, finishing down 5.36 per cent. All sectors declined with the exception of Telecommunications and Information Technology, gaining 0.36 and 2.3 per cent respectively. The worst performers were Financials and Energy, falling 1.96 and 2.11 per cent. Chinese stocks tumbled the most in three weeks as traders reduced stimulus bets and speculated the government will pare back efforts to prop up equities. The Shanghai Composite Index sank 6.2 percent to 3, at the close, the biggest loss since an 8.5 percent rout on July 27. About 35 stocks fell for each that rose, while more than 600 companies plunged by the daily 10 percent limit. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index slid 1.75 percent to its lowest level in nine months in Hong Kong. QBE DATELifts CODE Profit COMPANY 24pc, Raises Dividend ANNOUNCEMENT QBE Insurance Group (ASX:QBE) announced a 24% increase in net profit for the half year ending 30 June As previously announced management raised the interim dividend to 20c and intends to further reward shareholders in QBE Insurance Group announced a half year net profit after tax of US$488m which compares to last year s profit of US$392m. Revenue decreased slightly to $US7.9bn which is 6% lower compared to the previous corresponding period. Cash profit was US$471m compared to $16m for the same period last year, an increase of 13%.
