2 FRIDAY IN THE INTERNATIONAL MARKETS Global Ticker Daily Change US Markets Advance; European Markets Settle U.S. equities advanced, sending the Standard & Poor s 500 Index higher for the week, as investors turned their attention to economic reports amid the Federal Reserve s intention to raise interest rates. The S&P 500 rose 0.4 percent to 2, at 4 p.m. in New York, giving it a gain of 0.7 percent for the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added points, or 0.4 percent, to 17, The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 0.3 percent. Calm returned to European equity markets after days of wild swings during the week. The region s shares were little changed, with the Stoxx Europe 600 Index down 0.1 percent to at the close of trading. After three days of moves of more than 1 percent, the gauge had a relatively quiet day. It swung between gains of 0.6 percent and losses of 0.5 percent amid volume that was about a fourth lower than the 30-day average. 3 THE ASX FRIDAY IN REVIEW AUS Ticker Change ASX Down Week; China Positive Week The ASX finished of Friday with a loss of 0.58 per cent, brining the total weekly decline to 2.15 per cent. All the major banks were sold of with the exception of CBA as it is still in a trading halt. The major drivers of the week were capital raising s by the major banks and the triple devaluation of the Yuan, all resulting in a down market. On Friday most sectors declined, with the exception of Utilities, Healthcare, and Discretionary, gaining 0.57, 0.12 and 0.65 per cent respectively. The worst performer was Energy, losing 3.7 per cent. China s benchmark stock index capped its biggest weekly gain in two months, led by commodity companies, amid speculation that the weaker yuan will help to shore up the world s second-biggest economy. The Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.3 percent to 3, at the close, taking this week s advance to 5.9 percent. Coal producer China Shenhua Energy Co. led a rally for energy companies with a 15 percent jump. The yuan slid 3 percent this week after Tuesday s surprise devaluation and was little changed on Friday. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index fell 0.2 percent, extending this week s loss to 1.5 percent.
