2 YESTERDAY IN THE INTERNATIONAL MARKETS Global Ticker Daily Change U.S. Stocks Fall on Friday to Trim Weekly Gain U.S. stocks retreated to trim a weekly gain as investors awaited next week s Federal Reserve meeting, with economic indicators pointing to uneven growth in the world s largest economy. Banks and energy producers carried the steepest losses Friday, with crude oil sinking to a one-month low. The S&P 500 Index fell 0.4 percent to 2, at 4 p.m. in New York, in heavy trading amid a quarterly event known as quadruple witching, when futures and options contracts on indexes and individual stocks expire. Even as stock slid on Friday, the CBOE Volatility Index fell 5.7 percent to 15.37, extending its weekly decline to 12 percent. S&P % Dow Jones -0.49% NASDAQ -0.10% STOXX % FTSE % DAX % Crude Oil -2.00% Gold -0.59% A tumble in Deutsche Bank AG spread to the industry, deepening a selloff that dragged. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index fell 0.7 percent to a six-week low, down for a sixth time in seven days.

3 THE ASX YESTERDAY IN REVIEW AUS Ticker Change ASX Falls 1 Per Cent in Volatile Week The ASX soared over 1 per cent on Friday and trimmed the weekly loss to 41 points or 1 per cent. Investors experienced a volatile week as markets declined sharply early in the week to hit a low of 5,200 on Wednesday before staging a partial recovery. Australia s banks were major movers last week and largely responsible for some of the wild swings in equities. On Friday the S&P/ASX 200 rose 57 points and finished the week at 5,297 points. The Volatility Index fell nearly 7 per cent after jumping earlier in the week. Data last week showed that the Australian unemployment rate has dropped to 5.6 per cent in August from 5.7 per cent in the prior month. Full-time employment climbed by 11,500. National Australia Bank's business confidence index rose to +6 index points, with the results showing a patchy but sustained improvement in the non-mining economy.
