2 YESTERDAY IN THE INTERNATIONAL MARKETS Global Ticker Daily Change Most Markets Up as Greece Negotiations Continue U.S. stocks rose, with the Standard & Poor s 500 Index near a record, as investors weighed economic data for clues on the timing of higher interest rates amid optimism that a deal on Greek aid is within reach. The S&P 500 Index climbed 0.1 percent to 2, at 4 p.m. in New York, a one-month high and 0.3 percent from its record close. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added points, or 0.1 percent, to 18, The Nasdaq Composite Index increased 0.1 percent to an all-time high for a second day. A report Tuesday showed purchases of new homes increased more than forecast in May to the highest level in seven years. That added to data yesterday showing sales of previously owned homes climbed to their highest level since 2009, boosted by more first-time buyers. European stocks posted their biggest four-day rally since January as the region s leaders agreed Greece s government was getting serious about reaching a deal. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index rose 1.2 percent to at the close of trading. A report showed euro-area factory and services expanded more than forecast in June, signaling a pickup in the region s economy amid quantitative-easing measures by the European Central Bank. 3 THE ASX YESTERDAY IN REVIEW AUS Ticker Change ASX 200 Jumps 1.3% amid Greece Optimism The local sharemarket followed the strong lead from the international markets overnight as worries about a Greek default eased after Alexis Tsipras s government submitted a new proposal. The ASX 200 advanced 1.3% or 74 points on Tuesday. The market gained across the board as all sectors finished in the black. The Chinese HSBC Manufacturing PMI came in at 49.6 for June which is still below the 50 mark which indicates contraction.
