Brandt THE CRISIS IN INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL HERITAGE MANAGEMENT This seminar-style curse prvides a glbal perspective n the current state f Cultural Heritage Management. The management f Cultural Heritage has reached a critical stage. Plitical, religius and scial cnflicts, massive develpment prjects, gvernmental cmplacency, ignrance, crruptin and lack f funding, substantial turism grwth, and ther factrs have all seriusly impacted the Wrld s, and especially the Glbal Suth s ability t maintain, cnserve and prtect Cultural Heritage. The class will explre thrugh frmal lectures and infrmal seminar-type discussins what is meant by Cultural Heritage, and why and hw it has shaped ur past and cntemprary understanding f ethnicity, race and racism, human rights, religin, symblism and materialism, plitics, histry, media, business, migratin and immigratin, health, language and ther aspects f cntemprary sciety. The curse will als cnsider hw Cultural Heritage can be better managed and used psitively t eliminate r mitigate many f the divisive scial issues we face tday. Instead students will be required t read weekly assignments encmpassing jurnal, magazine and newspaper articles, bk chapters, vides, web sites and ther references. Thse nt available electrnically frm the Library r web will be upladed t CANVAS a week befre ntes are due (see belw). Curse Requirements and Grading Undergraduates: There are n exams. Instead, grades will be based n a ttal accumulatin f 300 pints as fllws: Cntribute regularly (and thughtfully) t seminar discussins. Class participatin will be graded n a Satisfactry (50 pints) /Unsatisfactry (25 pints) basis. I expect all f yu t receive the full 50 pints, but I reserve the right t assign fewer pints if I find yur class cntributin t be less than satisfactry, but mre than unsatisfactry! If yu think yu might have difficulty in speaking in a seminar frmat, please discuss this with me asap.

2 Assignments: Each week yu are t turn in assignments cmprising: typed ntes (3 duble-spaced pages max. f prse (nt utlines) summarizing/critiquing the required weekly readings. These are t be upladed t CANVAS n later than 1 am n the due date specified in the Schedule s I can try t read them befre class. Each student will be assigned a specific task (an article, a web site, etc) fr which yu are t summarize and present t the class in PwerPint (PP) frmat Yu may be asked ccasinally t lead class discussins f the weekly tpic. There will be 15 assignments with each wrth 10 pints fr a ttal f 150 pints. They will be graded by the fllwing scales: Excellent = 20 pts; Very Gd =18; Gd = 16; Satisfactry = 14. Unsatisfactry ntes are t be re-submitted until they are deemed at least Satisfactry. I may add r subtract a pint if yu are in-between a scale. 20 pints will be subtracted frm the ttal if ntes are cnsistently late, nt turned in r unable t read. I expect all f yu t receive the full 50 pints, A page maximum duble-spaced and typed research 100 pints n a subject f yur chice, but first cleared by me (mre n this later). Excellent = 100 pts; Very Gd =90; Gd =80; Fair =70; Pr = 60. I may add r subtract sme pints if yu are in-between a scale. Final Grade Pint Distributin: Discussin (50) + Assignments (150) + Paper (100) A % ( pints) B % ( pints) B 80-85% ( pints) C % ( pints) C 70-75% ( pints) D % ( pints) D 60-65% ( pints) E <60% (<149 pints) Graduates: Same number f requirements and pints, but graded separately frm the undergrads, plus: Preparatin f additinal ntes fr ccasinal Grad-Only weekly readings. These will be submitted after extra 1 hur meetings at a time suitable fr all grads. I als expect the Research Paper n a subject f yur interest t be lnger (i.e pages) and mre cmprehensive. Yur tpice will be mutually agreed upn by the grad student and prfessr. There may be the pprtunity f btaining sme bnus pints (t be added t yur ttal) by attending lectures r events arund campus and prviding a ne page summary. I will ntify yu f this in advance.. Attendance: Attendance is mandatry. Befre ding this week s readings, write dwn in a paragraph r s fr each questin: 1) what the term Heritage means t yu. 2) Hw wuld yu define Natural Heritage vs. Cultural Heritage? 3) What d yu think are the best ways t manage Cultural Heritage? After ding the assigned readings, write a paragraph r s n: 4) Hw, if at all, has yur definitin f Heritage, Natural Heritage and Cultural Heritage changed. I knw yu dn t have much time t prepare fr this, s just prepare yur ntes fr tmrrw s discussin as best yu can (I.e. handwritten, utline, etc.). Yu dn't have t turn in these ntes, but I d expect yu t be able t refer t smething fr discussin. When reading the articles, try t recgnize and recrd the main pints. Remember, there are n exams fr which yu have t regurgitate details. The Readings are in the "Files" Tab. There are tw additinal articles fr the grads, but undergrads are always welcme t read and cmment n them as well.
