3 October 2017 Windsor Locks Page 3 Municipal Agent Notes By John Sullivan Need Help Understanding your Pension Plan? July, 2006 congress passed the Pension Plan Protection Act of 2006, which is widely believed to have encouraged companies to abandon their defined benefit (traditional) pension plans. The combination of the shift from defined benefit plans toward defined contribution (401K&403B) plans coupled with benefit freezes and increases in corporate bankruptcies is expected to result in a reduction in guaranteed and stable sources of retirement income for Baby Boomers. Working people need to understand their entitlement to pensions from their employer, participate in the employer s plans that are available to them, and claim the benefits they have earned. There is a free service to help workers do just that. It s the Pension Action Center at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Ellen Bruce, Director of the Center says The message is clear: understand your pension plan, keep track of the benefits to which you re entitled, and ask for help if you have problems or if it becomes too confusing The Pension Action Center runs the New England Pension Assistance Project, which is the only organization in New England devoted exclusively to helping individuals free of charge with their pension and retirement plan problems. They can help you to understand your plan and your rights as a participant whether you re in a traditional pension, a public retirement plan or a 401k. The project also assists people in obtaining the benefits to which they are entitled. For more information- whether you re a baby boomer or someone older (born before 1946) you can contact the Center toll free at , by fax at , or visit their website at JOHN S TIP OF THE MONTH Common sense finally prevails! After decades of displaying Social Security numbers for all the world to see -and misuse-. Medicare cards will no longer contain them. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will begin mailing new Medicare cards in April 2018, and expects to meet the Congressional deadline of April The new cards will provide their owners with a unique, randomly assigned number called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier. ROBERT BELLARMINE CHURCH 52 SOUTH ELM STREET October 6 & 20, November 3 & 17 December 1, 15 & 29 OCTOBER BIRTHDAYS Happy 90th Birthday Kenneth Manning 10/3 George Briere 10/15 Happy 80th Birthday Frederic Sirois 10/31 Dear Readers, As I look out my living room window, the view is so calm and the surroundings are exactly the same as they were 60 years ago when Phil carried me over the threshold, my weight is not the same, but who cares!! My point here is that aren t we lucky here in CT. that nothing has changed compared to the State of Texas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and many others. My heart and prayers are with them in the days to come. I can t imagine losing my home, possessions, photographs, gifts my children gave me over the years, (yes I still have them) they all tease me because I m a neat freak. Everyone at the Senior Center knows that. I can t help it, when something is missing they all come asking me where it is. I must admit sometimes I have put it in the round file! Make sure everyone reads the SCAN for the upcoming months, there is so much going on in Oct, Nov, & Dec Crafts, informative programs, exercise classes, bingo, and Maria will make you a nice breakfast. I just put out some new books that were donated, I refilled the card display (10cents a card) I do need some Get Well Cards (just a small hint)!! Before closing my article I would like to take a moment and mention that Phil s Auto on Spring Street had a new face lift. It looks great! Yes Phil s caricature is still there! November 23rd will be our 55th year in business and I m so proud of my 2 boys, Pete and Tony. I m sure Phil would be also. Enjoy the fall season have a blessed Thanksgiving. My next article will be in the December Newsletter. With a Song in Your Heart.
