SILIR at silir@siu.edu April Speaker: Dr. Walter Metz The Animation of America: On Dr. Seuss and the Cinema Investigations into the children's books of Dr. Seuss are surprisingly rare in cultural theory. This presentation uses the cartoon work of Ted Geisel to understand recent films--such as Finding Nemo (6003)--made at Pixar Animation Studios. Walter Metz is a Professor in the Department of Cinema and Photography at Southern Illinois University, where he teaches film and television studies. He is the author of three books: Engaging Film Criticism (2000), Bewitched (6007 ), and Gilligan s Island (6016). He helps SIU students do professional film and television reviewing as part of "SIU Reviews," a radio program on WSIU in Carbondale, IL. April movie will be The Music Man The next meeting will be Wednesday, Apr. 21 at Epiphany Lutheran Church. Coffee and snacks at 9 am and movie at 9:30 am. SILIR Monthly Interest Groups Monthly Book Club The Book Club meets on the 3rd Monday of the month at 9:30am at Epiphany Lutheran Church on West Chautauqua. April 16th April s book selection is A Man Called Ove by Fredrick Backman Monthly Lunch Discussion Group Members are invited to join this group to meet monthly to share lunch and open conversation. The group moves around to different regional restaurants throughout the year, meeting at 11:45am April 26th Location: Learning in Retirement at the Varsity, April 12 at 7:30 for a night at the theater. Learning in Retirement members are invited to a special presentation of Almost Identical, a gay comedy written by Vince Rhomberg. It is about identical twins, one of whom is straight and the other gay. You can imagine the misunderstandings that could arise in such a situation and all of them are very funny. Tickets are $3 and seating is on a first come, first served basis. There will be a discussion of the play afterwards with the opportunity to speak to the playwright/director and also some or all of the actors.
