1 The UNB Retiree Fall 2017 Page Newsletter of the UNB Retired Employees Association Fall 2017 UNBREA Fall Meeting for members and Guests UNBREA Fall Meeting The Fall Meeting will be on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 in McConnell Hall, Fredericton Campus. Coffee will be available from 10:00 and the presentation will be at 10:30. Parking passes will be sent by . Retirees from Saint Thomas are cordially invited. Last winter the meeting was called due to weather. This will be the talk by Gary Kenyon that we were unable to have in February. Details are on page 2.
2 The UNB Retiree Fall 2017 Page 2 UNBREA Winter Meeting Our speaker is Dr. Gary Irwin-Kenyon the founding Chair and Professor, Gerontology Department, St. Thomas University, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. He is also a teacher and practitioner of Tai Chi with more than thirty years experience. We will meet Tuesday, October 24, 2017 in McConnell Hall, Fredericton Campus. Coffee will be available from 10:00 and Gary will speak at 10:30, discussing his recent book Pathways to Stillness, he tells us: This book is about stillness: What it is. How you can find it. Where it hides itself. Why it is necessary to your life. Learn how stillness can change our view of what it means to lose and regain the sense of our story in the midst and aftermath of loss, as well as our commonly shared misconception of the nature of time and how we usually experience it. Learn also how our negative beliefs about aging can be made more positive. This book is also about learning to appreciate wandering or meandering along life s pathways. It does not contain Six Easy Steps to Wisdom and Immortality. Rather, it offers a way to approach your journey, which you then create and discover on your own, with help! You are invited to find a Pathway to Stillness that fits your life.
3 The UNB Retiree Fall 2017 Page Executive for President - David Macneil Vice-President - Dexter Noel Past President - Wolfgang Faig Secretary - Sandy Craft Treasurer - Larry Wisniewski Membership - Brian Cassidy / Mary-Anne Blakney UNBSJ Rep - volunteer needed Communications - Brian Cassidy, volunteer needed, Kirby Keyser President's Committee - Howard Fritz Fringe Benefits - Kirby Keyser CURAC - Linda Kealey At Large - Jim Christie, Tony Short, John Teskey Recent meetings of the Executive were: April 4, 2017 September 19, 2017 UNBREA needs a continuing executive. (We get older too!) As positions become vacant, please consider offering to fill one of them. Your services to UNBREA are important to ensure it can speak to the important issues affecting us. New members of the Executive take office at the AGM. All these members of your Executive (and the others) would be pleased to hear from you, your concerns, questions and ideas. Thanks to members of the Executive who are retiring this year. Membership New members are always welcome. Memberships are available at any meeting and through our web page. Past due Membership Fee Policy Members whose dues are more than one year in arrears are removed from our membership list after the Fall meeting.
4 The UNB Retiree Fall 2017 Page 4 History of Information Technology (HIT) at UNB The web site with the material collected by the small group is located at: hit.lib.unb.ca. There nearly 20 video interviews of some of the movers and shakers of IT at UNB. Have a look at them! They were originally intended to provide an oral account of the development of Computer Science, Computer Center, and Computer Services from 1967 to However they have turned out to be a rich insight into UNB during that period. People from both campuses, such as Fritz Grein, Robert Burridge, and Barry Beckett talk about themselves and what was going on at UNB at that time. There are many interesting pieces on the CURAC Newsletter at: including Taking the Pulse of Seniors Health Care in 2016 by our member and chair of CURAC s Health Care Policy Committee - Linda Kealey This September there were 292 members. in the UNBREA. Based on the numbers retiring each year, membership should be closer to 350. Please encourage people you know who have retired to join. If you have any ideas for increasing the membership let anyone on the executive know. At the AGM: By-law changes were approved to specify the term for executive offices at two years. Communications was added to the standing committees and voting was specified as a show of hands.
