1 January 2018 Falmouth Newcomers Newsletter President s Message Happy New Year! Save the Date We ended the year with two wonderful events. Roanne and Joe Angiello organized the Cape Cod Symphony Holiday Concert and lunch at Alberto s Ristorante. The December meeting was a luncheon at the Cape Club. The hall was beautifully decorated, members were dressed in festive attire and music was provided by WHOI Noon Tune. Barbara DiMarzo accepted the Newcomers gift of $1200 worth of gift cards and lots of wrapping paper to the Falmouth Service Center. Thanks to our VPs of Programs Jane Woodin and Jane Murphy and their committee for this wonderful event. I hope everyone enjoyed their holidays with family and friends. As the holiday season winds down many snow birds will leave us for warmer climates. We will miss them. Those of us who will be hunkered down for the winter in Falmouth will be looking for opportunities to gather and socialize. Jan 11 - General Meeting Jan 13 - Wine Tasting April 26 - Dirt Digger Meeting May 5 - Spring Dinner Dance Wine Tasting is our first social of This is a popular event with lots of wines, cheeses and chocolates. The deadline is January 5 so, if you plan to attend, mail in your coupon. Newcomers will be offering mix and mingles, game nights and monthly meetings with interesting speakers. Many of the activities will be running right through until spring: book groups, line dancing, samba and games at Gus Canty, dinner and a movie, walking, breakfast, teachers and singles groups, etc. Check the newsletter for details and contact information. Between January 1 and March 31, 2018 membership dues for an individual or a couple is $20. All memberships expire on June 30, We are currently inviting all residents of Falmouth to join Newcomers. Spread the news to your neighbors and friends. The board has voted to raise the dues for couples only from $40 to $50 for calendar year Expenses have been going up and we would like to continue to offer lots of programs and socials. Our last dues increase was approximately 10 years ago. Dues for individuals remain at $30. Details are in the newsletter. Our next meeting is Thursday, January 11 at 9:30 a.m. at the Congregational Church on Main Street in Falmouth. Our speaker will be a retired judge speaking on legal issues behind a famous case. You won t want to miss it. In This Issue Page 2 - January General Meeting - Change to Membership Dues Page 3 - Wine Tasting Page 4 - Group Activity Highlights - New Members Page 5 - Meeting Minutes I wish those who are travelling a safe journey. If you are braving the winter here in Falmouth, I hope you take advantage of all the opportunities to meet and socialize that Newcomers has to offer. Seating is limited to 72 and seats will be filled according to the date received. Seats for the wine tasting are almost sold out. 4 Group Activity Highlights Page 4 Join us for cards and games the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Gus Canty Community Center. Bring your favorite game or play Samba--a card game similar to canasta. We are interested in beginning a volunteer group that would be willing to help other members. Many individuals have some skills and some time that could help others in the group. Often members have short term needs and other members could help. One of the goals of the Newcomers Group is community building and this effort would be helpful.
5 Minutes of General Meeting December 14, 2017 Doris Lachapelle, President of Newcomers, opened the meeting at 12:10 PM and welcomed everyone to the Holiday Luncheon. She thanked Jane Woodin and Jane Murphy and their committee for putting the event together. A motion was made by Doris, seconded and approved to accept the minutes of the November General Meeting. She announced that there are still spaces available for the Wine Tasting in January and that there were coupons available on the table in the entryway. Doris introduced Barbara DiMarzo who was representing the Falmouth Service Center. She thanked Barbara for her work at the center and presented her with the gifts. Barbara spoke about the many services the center provides. She thanked the club members for generously donating the gift cards, which are given to tweens, and the wrapping paper. Dr. Olivia White, a past president, gave the Invocation. Jane Woodin and Jane Murphy, VPs of Programs, welcomed the group and thanked Midge Frieswyk and Karen Baranowski who did a wonderful job planning the luncheon. Jane Murphy gave a holiday toast with Prosecco and then reminded that group that the January meeting would feature a retired judge discussing famous Massachusetts court cases. Jane Woodin introduced the group, Woods Hole Tunes, who played music during the luncheon. The business meeting ended at 12:22 PM. Respectfully submitted, Ginny Palmieri, Recording Secretary Page 5 Nantucket Stroll with Singles Group at Flying Bridge Book Club Teachers Group Request a Print Copy of the Newsletter Please Print Clearly September 2017 to June 2018 Cost $10.00 Name: Phone number: Street: Town: Zip:
