Name: CARING FOR A PARROT SCENARIO Your neighbour Mrs. Pigeon is going away on an urgent business trip. On Sunday afternoon she came by to ask you to take care of her parrot, starting the next morning. She gave you her house keys and told you she left instructions on the kitchen table. Here is the note she left: Hello, Thank you for taking care of my beloved parrot Kiki for the week. Parrots need lots of care and attention. You have to change his water daily once in the morning and once at night. You'll need to buy his fruit and vegetables at the grocery store and buy his birdseed at the pet store for $12. He only has enough seed left to cover Monday and Tuesday. Here are instructions for feeding Kiki: Twice daily, you need to: - Fill his pellet dish and make sure it's never empty. - Feed him vegetables cut into large pieces. Remove any leftovers once he has finished eating. Give him palm-sized portions Vary his vegetables from day to day and give him at least three different vegetables each day. - Give him seeds (portions for all seven days are already prepared and stored in the fridge). - Give him three pieces of fruit every two days. He loves eating orange and mango slices. When portioning fruit, use the same method I suggested for measuring vegetables. P.S.: Feel free to share some of your evening meal with Kiki. Avoid fat and sugar! If you have time, please give Kiki a shower every day. Take him out of his cage and use the spray bottle on the kitchen counter. He loves it, you'll see! I have also left you a helpful informational brochure on parrots. Have a great week and thanks again! P.S. I've left you $25 to cover purchases, I hope that will be enough. 6 Name: CARING FOR A PARROT OWNER'S GUIDE QUICK GUIDE FOR PARROT OWNERS Parrots require a lot of care and attention. They can be wonderful pets if you give them the attention they need. Adopting a parrot is a lifelong commitment. Small parrots live 10 to 15 years, while larger ones have a life expectancy of 40 to 100 years. HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR BIRD Cage Daily: - Using a mild soap, clean the perches and food trays. - Replace the litter to keep the cage sanitary. Personal hygiene Wash your hands often: human saliva can be dangerous for birds. Avoid contact between your mouth and the bird's beak and do not share food that has touched human saliva. Water Change the bird's water twice per day, parrots need fresh water at all times. Parrots love daily showers. For small species: place a bath inside the cage. For large species: use a spray bottle outside the cage to avoid getting the seeds wet.

Name: CARING FOR A PARROT OWNER'S GUIDE FEEDING YOUR PARROT Most parrots have similar diets. Here are the types of foods they eat: Pellets Pellets are an essential source of nutrients for parrots. It is important to feed them high-quality pellets. Seeds and protein Seeds alone cannot meet all these birds' nutritional requirements. In order to give them enough protein, you need to supplement seed mixtures with hard-boiled eggs (with or without the shell), fish, tofu, legumes, well-cooked chicken or even mealworms. Vegetables Vegetables are an important part of a parrot's diet. Dark green and orange vegetables provide the most nutrition: carrots, bell peppers, cabbage, broccoli, zucchini, green beans, corn, pumpkin, beans, peas, sweet potatoes, celery, asparagus, spinach, etc. Make sure to AVOID avocados because they are poisonous for birds. Fruit Fruit is not as important for parrots as vegetables. Fruit can also cause diarrhoea, and must therefore be provided in moderation. Orange fruits are preferable because they contain vitamin A: apricots, papayas, mangoes, tomatoes, blackberries, bananas, strawberries, raspberries, kiwis, oranges, melon, mandarins, peaches, nectarines, apples, pears, grapes, etc. Grain products Excellent source of protein. Whole grain pasta, whole grain rice, couscous or commercial cereal mixtures are also suitable.

Name: CARING FOR A PARROT SCHEDULE AND FOOD LIST SCHEDULE Using the calendar, mark down the time you visit Mrs. Pigeon's parrot and how long you spend with him. Write down his food list before you go to the grocery store so you remember what fruits and vegetables you need to buy. GROCERY LIST Check a few store flyers before you create your grocery list and budget. TIME Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Food E.g. cucumbers Quantity 3 Total spent: Friday Saturday Sunday Advertised price Cost 2/$0,99 $1.49

Name: LORI'S MONTHLY BUDGET SCENARIO Lori would really like to get her own apartment. She has found a place and has made a list of all the costs. She works 30 hours per week and makes $10/hour. Lori's parents don't like the idea.they don't believe she'll be able to afford all the expenses. What do you think? Here are the costs Lori anticipates: Electricity $100/month Telephone and Internet $70/month Rent $500/month Groceries $350/month Transportation $100/month Leisure activities $50/month

Name: LORI'S MONTHLY BUDGET CALCULATION 1. a) Add up Lori's expenses for one month. b) Lori's total monthly expenses come to: 2. a) Calculate Lori's income for one month, keeping in mind there are usually four weeks per month. b) Lori's monthly income is: 3. Do you think Lori can afford to get her own apartment? Explain your answer.

LORI'S MONTHLY BUDGET ANSWERS 1. b) Lori's total expenses come to: $1,170/month 2. b) Lori's monthly income is: $1,200/month 3. What do you think? Can Lori afford her own apartment? Explain your answer. Lori earns enough to cover her expenses, but she would only have $30 left over for unexpected costs, such as medications. If she needs to buy clothes or if her grocery bill is higher than expected, she could have trouble paying her fixed expenses.
