3 Dear Members Letter from the Chair SELAS had a successful year in 2017 with a full programme of events. We expect to enjoy a similar level of activity in 2018, as this brochure testifies. There are, however, a couple of major changes on which I would like to comment as follows: Due to rising costs beyond our control, the Committee has, with regret, decided to increase the annual subscription for 2018 to 60, as well as removing the free tea and coffee at Free Members Meetings (hot and cold drinks can be purchased at the bar, then brought to the meeting). The increase may seem excessive, but it enables us to provide: 1) Access to seven three-hour evening seminars at a substantially lower cost than similar courses offered by the main commercial providers -sandwiches and soft drinks included! 2) Eight Free Members Meetings of 1.5 hours each 3) Ten expert-led Tax Discussion Group meetings of 2 hours each These last two amount to 32 hours of presentations and seminars, which works out at less than 2 per hour for formal CPD. Most importantly, we have been able to keep our Course fees at last year s prices and believe we now offer the best value CPD seminars, given by the country s top speakers, anywhere in London. Our Helpline providers for the past few years, RSM UK, have informed us that they are no longer able to provide this service. An was sent out to all members in October to gauge the effect of this decision. As a result of responses received, the Committee has decided not to seek an alternative provider, but to review the situation for In the meantime, if any of you could not respond at the time but would like to comment now, please feel free to contact me at millcove1912@gmail.com. Not all members appear aware that SELAS operates an informal round robin system through which technical (mostly tax) queries can be posed and, hopefully, answered. If you would like to be included in the group, please let me know. In addition, I have found the SELAS Tax Discussion Group sessions an excellent way of resolving queries. Please the chairman Andrew McKenzie-Smart in advance of meetings with your questions: mac@smartsolutionsllp.com. Finally, when it comes to needing help, some SELAS members will have access to alternative facilities such as the ICAEW Tax Faculty referral scheme. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, may I reiterate a few points which I have mentioned before: The committee is working hard to reach potential new members. Please do your bit by spreading the word, and bringing guests to Free Members Meetings. This association doesn t run itself. We are constantly on the lookout for new committee members please contact me if you would like to come to our next meeting as an observer. For members of both ICAEW and Linked In, LSCA is looking to increase engagement through its Linked In Group, so if you and your colleagues are members of both, please sign up. IR 35 AND STATUS ISSUES Thursday 1 March pm 9.00pm Course objectives: The new rules on IR 35 will affect many companies which have contracts either directly or indirectly with the public sector. This course looks at how the new regulations will work in practice and includes a review of recent cases such as Pimlico Plumbers, Uber and Deliveroo which have been decided on status in the courts. The Taylor Review on working practices will undoubtedly lead to changes in the legal status regarding employment and self-employment, leading to the possibility of further rules on status on status. All tax practitioners need to be aware of the risks and opportunities in this area. The course will include: IR 35 calculations Defining relevant engagements New issues with the public sector Interaction with CIS How to treat IR 35 income in the accounts Using the new employment status indicator Speaker: Jeremy Mindell CTA CIPD TAXATION OF PROPERTY Tuesday 17 April pm 9.00pm Course objectives: This talk will draw attention to finance cost restrictions for individuals renting out residential property and provide a reminder on how this is being phased in. 12 ACCOUNTS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES Tuesday 5 June pm 9.00pm Course objectives: The course will ensure that delegates are aware of the legal and professional requirements regarding the preparation of accounts for small businesses. This course will include examples derived from practical experience of businesses transitioning to new UK GAAP. The course will include: Small and micro-companies Legal requirements for accounts for shareholders and filing/ FRS 102 and FRS 105 in practice Unincorporated businesses ICAEW Technical release HMRC and accounts for unincorporated businesses LLPs The key issues including similarities and differences from companies and other unincorporated businesses Speaker: Bill Telford BC FCA (Telford Financial Training) VAT LATEST Tuesday 4 September pm Course objectives: Working as it does according to its own rules quite different from those applying to other taxes VAT is an area where an experienced navigator can be especially helpful in demonstrating how to negotiate the pitfalls. The aim in this session is to guide delegates through a series of topics of current interest and to offer advice about what opportunities exist for the well-informed. The course will include: Any significant legal developments Changes in HMRC practice The latest on VAT and Brexit MTD for VAT Speaker: Neil Owen (VAT Advisory Services) TAX FOR SMALL BUSINESSES Tuesday 16 October pm 9.00pm Course objectives: Small businesses may feel they are under attack from both HMRC and the government, with the former challenging their claims for EIS relief and the latter trying to increase their tax and NIC. However, with good advice, there is still a lot of scope for legitimately reducing tax liabilities. The course will include: Tax liability from "profit to pocket" for sole traders and companies EIS pitfalls in recent cases and how to avoid them Self-employed status - where are we now and where are we going? 13 MAKING TAX DIGITAL AND OTHER TOPICAL ISSUES Tuesday 6 November pm 9.00pm Course objectives: By the time this course is run we should have an idea of how the system is going to work although it will be early days! The intention is to consider the practical implications of the new regime; when clients will have to engage with the new procedures and provide practical help in how to manage the transition. There will be a review of the current HMRC guidelines and initial thoughts about the practical problems being encountered by clients. As this is a new topic, changes to the course may be introduced at the last minute but the intention is to provide attendees with a full and robust understanding of this fundamental change in the way we will engage with HMRC. Please note that if changes to MTD render this course irrelevant, it will be replaced by another topical subject. Speaker: Dr Ros Martin CTA, Consultant Adviser and Lecturer AUTUMN BUDGET 2018 Wednesday 5 December pm Course objectives: This will be the Chancellor s last Budget before Brexit finally happens and he may have to introduce a number of measures to stimulate the economy. This course will focus on planning actions to be taken before the end of the tax year as well as new measures announced in the Autumn Budget.
