We will examine how the new contribution limits & rules work and the strategies that may be implemented to maximise clients superannuation balances. A focus will be how the non-concessional contribution limits interact with Total Super Balances as well as the expanded ability for individuals to claim personal deductions from concessional contributions. Given these substantial changes to pensions, coupled with all the other 2017 superannuation reforms, what new pension strategies have emerged to enable SMSF members to make best use of the new superannuation world? For Transition to Retirement Income Streams (TRIS), now that the tax benefit has been removed: What other benefits can you derive from having one in place? What should you be mindful of? What about retirement phase pensions? Are they now set and forget, or are there actions that can be taken to ensure SMSF members optimise the amount they hold in tax free retirement pension phase? When will it be attractive to restructure a member s retirement phase pensions in the future? What are the key upcoming compliance and practical considerations for SMSFs in the coming months now that it is almost 12 months since the 2016 budget measures came into operation? The implementation of event-based reporting in the SMSF sector; including online access for individuals and their advisers to ATO information and services about their superannuation accounts. The session covers the following: How does the CGT relief apply to segregated and unsegregated assets? What are the latest ATO views on the CGT relief? What are the key issues with the CGT relief for SMSFs that invest in structures? How do the cost base reset rules affect SMSFs from 1 July 2017? Lunch Session 5: Audit risks considerations for 2017 audits The session will cover the practical implications of the numerous superannuation changes on auditing SMSFs. 4 Presenter profiles Lead by tax practioners for tax professionals Belinda Aisbett is the Director of Super Sphere Pty Ltd, a specialist self-managed superannuation company, where she is responsible for providing audit, consulting and training services in relation to SMSFs. Belinda established Super Sphere in 2003 to specialise in SMSF auditing and audit-related services, and is responsible for auditing around 1,000 funds per year. This is in addition to providing an SMSF audit tool kit to other auditing professionals and undertaking numerous training engagements each year. Belinda is a member of the ICAA, and holds a Bachelor of Business (Accounting). Alex Affleck Australian Taxation Office, joined the ATO in In 2016, Alex was appointed as an Assistant Commissioner in the Tax Counsel Network (TCN) focussing on superannuation. Prior to that, he was a Tax Counsel in TCN specialising in indirect taxes. He has been involved in the development of public rulings litigation, as well as providing input into taxation law design. Nidal Danoun, CTA, is the Principal Director of Prosperity Financial Services (PFS Consultancy). Nidal provides advice to financial institutions and professionals in the areas of advice assessment, financial services regulatory compliance and practice management. Nidal also works closely with the regulators in this space, including working as a subject matter expert advising on issues related to quality of advice, enforceable undertakings and licensing and accreditation of financial advisers. Nidal holds a Master of Commerce, he is a Chartered Accountant, a Fellow CPA Financial Planning Specialist, Certified Financial Planner, and a member of the CFA Institute. Craig Day is the Executive Manager of Colonial First State s technical services team, FirstTech, and has over 19 years experience in the financial services industry. In his role Craig is responsible for providing specialist technical support to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia s investment, superannuation and advice businesses and to act as a media spokesman for Colonial First State on superannuation and retirement planning issues. Phil La Greca, SuperConcepts, an accomplished SMSF technical expert and is a sought-after media commentator on SMSF technical issues. He has over 30 years experience working in specialist administration, technical and compliance roles with a variety of organisations, including AM Corporation and William Mercer. Kasey Macfarlane, Australian Taxation Office, is the ATO s Assistant Commissioner responsible for selfmanaged superannuation funds. Prior to joining the ATO in 1999 Kasey worked as a chartered accountant in both a big 4 and second tier accounting firm. During her time at the ATO Kasey has undertaken a number of technical leadership roles and her responsibilities across various tax products have included: Technical leadership and input into policy and law development; Leading the development of ATO public rulings and guidance products; Leading the management and resolution of tax related strategic litigation matters. Leigh Mansell is a Director, SMSF Technical & Education Services at Heffron SMSF Solutions, and she is intimately involved in developing the firm s range of products and services for clients (including technical and educational materials) and the provision of technical support to SMSF practitioners and their clients. She regularly delivers presentations to SMSF practitioners around Australia and one of Leigh s greatest attributes is her ability to make complex concepts appear simple through the use of real life scenarios. Participants in previous training events have valued this practical approach highly. Darren Wynen is the founder of Insyt, a company that provides publications, and consulting services for accountants and financial advisers. Darren has been in the tax and accounting field for over 24 years and more specifically, in the training arena for the last 16 years. Darren originally worked for the NTAA for 10 years and also as a writer and trainer for TaxBanter Pty Ltd. He also assists with writing and reviewing technical materials for the SMSF Association, including the Association s Trustee Knowledge Centre, SSA program and adviser case studies. 4
