2 WELCOME 2017 WA Superannuation Intensive 2017 is ramping up to be the year of superannuation. What an exciting and dynamic time to practise in this space. With major reform packages announced and a raft of brand new laws kicking in on 1 July 2017, you and your SMSF clients will be the first to be hit with the Government s new measures. With so many changes happening, The Western Australia Superannuation Intensive 1.5 day event has come at just the right time. It s a must-attend event for all those who have SMSF clients. Hosted by a panel of industry experts, you will hear about the latest changes, issues and strategies to navigate you through unchartered waters. 4 PRESENTER PROFILES An overview of our experts Greg Bentley, CTA, has been working in the area of superannuation for over 19 years for some of Australia s leading superannuation accounting firms. He is the Director of Opulen Accounting and Superannuation, a specialist chartered accounting firm that provides administration, compliance and auditing services to a range of superannuation clients, accounting firms and financial planners. Greg is a SMSF Association Specialist Advisor and Specialist Auditor, Chartered Tax Adviser, Chartered Accountant, a previous winner of the SMSF Association CEO Scholarship Award and a regular speaker on a range of superannuation topics. Bruce Cooper is a senior adviser with Perpetual Private. He provides a high level of strategic and investment advice to clients tailored to their individual needs and goals. Before moving to Australia, Bruce had a successful career in London at UBS Wealth Management and Merrill Lynch Wealth Management where he provided investment and strategic advice to high net worth clients. In Australia, Bruce was an Executive Financial Adviser at Dixon Advisory prior to joining Perpetual. He specialises in using superannuation to help clients build towards their retirement in the most tax efficient manner and to manage their retirement assets. Daniel Fry, CTA, is a partner of EY Law specialising in the provision of legal and tax services to high net worth individuals and their related companies and trusts. He is a chartered accountant and solicitor who has over 20 years of experience in revenue law. He practises in all areas of tax and duty but has a particular focus on superannuation, estate planning, trusts, business structuring, capital gains tax and dealing with the ATO in relation to tax disputes. Daniel is also a Chartered Tax Adviser of the Taxation Institute and currently serves as a member of the state council for its WA division. Daniel was recently named in Doyle s Guide as one of the leading tax lawyers in WA and is a key member of the EY Law team in Perth that was recognised as the leading tax law firm in WA in Con Gotsis, CTA, is the Director in charge of Pascoe Partners Accountants self-managed superannuation fund division and is the Director and Responsible Manager of the firm s AFSL company Western Advisory. He has been a CPA for 20 years and has a Masters of Taxation from Curtin University. In addition he is a Tax Institute Chartered Tax Advisor and a SMSFA accredited Specialist Advisor and Auditor. Con also holds a Diploma of Financial Services (FP) and has been accredited by CPA Australia as a financial planning specialist and is an Affiliate of the Financial Planning Association of Australia. Con is a regular public speaker on superannuation issues for The Tax Institute and SMSF Association and a member of the Tax Institute Professional Development committee. Mark Hill, CTA, is a founding director in accountancy and advisory firm Indian Ocean Advisory Group with over 30 years experience in the accounting profession. Mark works closely with family and business groups providing specialist taxation and advisory services including taxation structuring, planning, accounting and business advice, asset protection and estate planning. Mark also specialises in the self-managed superannuation fund sector and provides advisory services to a large client base of self-managed superannuation funds. Mark s services include Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act advisory and compliance issues, taxation reviews, tax audits, SMSF audit, retirement planning, estate planning and strategies regarding the implementation of retirement products. Jamie Kelly holds a Masters of Arts majoring in Funds Management from Macquarie University, Diploma in Financial Planning from Deakin University and is a Fellow of the FPA. Jamie held various positions with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (including financial planning), before commencing with Mercantile Mutual in 1988 as Manager of Investment Products, in WA then NSW and the ACT. Jamie commenced with Challenger Financial Services Group in 2000 and held the roles of State Manager in NSW, National Sales Manger of Investment Products and Manager of a range Managed Investment products. Jamie has extensive experience in both the retail funds management and risk insurance and is also a member of ASIC s Industry Consultative Financial Service and Credit committee and the Course Technical Advisor for their Diploma and Certificate IV Financial Services and Mortgage Broking. Jamie has over 40 years experience in financial services industry holding a number of senior executive positions, covering areas from Financial Planning, Sales, Product Design, Funds Management and Compliance & Risk Management. Since returning to Western Australia in 2004, Jamie is in high demand as a consultant to the financial services industry. He is also a director of a small financial planning and broking firm as well as a director of a private investment company. Iggy Moro, CTA, is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), a CA SMSF Specialist and a Director with Walker Wayland WA. Iggy has been in public practice since 1992 and advises clients in tax, business advisory and SMSF. He assists clients achieve their business, financial and personal goals from start-ups, SMEs and multi-national businesses from a wide range of industries. He has recently completed his Diploma of Financial Planning through CAANZ and Kaplan. Iggy is the Walker Wayland Australasia National Chair of the Superannuation Specialist Group. He has also been a Focus Session Facilitator and Exam Marker for the CAANZ CA Program as well as workshop facilitator for Tax at UWA Business School. He is also a CAANZ committee member of the WA Public Practice Advisory Committee and the National Superannuation Advisory Committee. Jemma Sanderson, CTA, is a Director at Cooper Partners Financial Services, heading up their SMSF specialist services. Jemma provides strategic advice on SMSFs, estate planning and wealth management to clients, as well as technical support to accounting, legal and financial planning groups. Jemma has over 15 years experience in developing complex strategies for high net worth clients. Jemma is a regular presenter on superannuation and SMSFs for The Tax Institute and other professional bodies across Australia. Jemma is the author of the popular SMSF Guide published by The Tax Institute, currently in its 7th edition, and is the author and convenor of The Tax Institute s Graduate Diploma of Applied Tax Law Advanced Superannuation unit. Katie Timms has been with RSM Australia since 2005 and has specialised in superannuation since commencing work as an accountant in She has significant experience in all areas of SMSFs, including administration and compliance, asset acquisition and tax saving strategies, structural assistance and estate planning. Katie provides advice and assistance to Trustees, accountants and financial advisors. Katie has presented for The Tax Institute, CA, Institute of Public Accountants and TV Ed. She has been published in the Australian Financial Review, the West Australian and Farm Weekly. Liz Westover is a Director in the Private Clients division of PricewaterhouseCoopers, providing advice and technical support for the firm and its clients on superannuation and related tax matters. She has extensive experience in superannuation, regularly liaising and consulting with Government, regulators and stakeholders on technical, legislative and policy matters. Liz has strong capabilities on the technical application of superannuation and associated tax laws. She is a regular commentator on superannuation issues with mainstream and social media and has authored blogs and articles on superannuation and related matters for many years. She is a Fellow Chartered Accountant and a CA SMSF specialist. Pitched at practitioners who continue to build their expertise in tax as well as experienced tax practitioners who are well established in their career. These sessions provide technical information combined with practical insights to help practitioners build an in-depth understanding of the topic.
