3 Payroll issues for our clients - 8 September 2014 Robert Leach is a chartered accountant and certified accountant with over 25 years of experience in lecturing and published writing in Tax and Payroll. Robert offers great advice as part of his presentations across a wide range of taxes, including income tax, corporation tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax, and value added tax. He also presents on payroll and related matters. Robert has lectured for HM Revenue and Customs, BPP, Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals, and to commercial companies and major accounting firms, among others. The course will include: RTI: outline, where we are now, experience so far, penalty regime Changes to statutory payments: SSP reclaim, paternity leave, family leave Pensions: 2014 Budget changes, single tier pension, class 3A national insurance, reduce limits and protection, NESTs and auto-enrolment PAYE and NI: overview of systems concentrating on recent changes Taxation of benefits, concentrating on recent changes Round-up of other changes VAT update and refresher - 6 October 2014 John Brown John s experience of VAT is widespread. He was involved in VAT before it was introduced in the UK on 01 April 1973 and his involvement has run as an unbroken thread ever since. He established the first in house VAT group within a major professional firm and was a founder member of the VAT Practitioners Group. In addition to acting as a consultant to Professional Tax Practice and running his own VAT Consultancy practice he lectures widely on the subject; he sat as a member of the VAT and Duties Tribunals for 15 years to 2009, which appointment he assumed on retiring from Ernst & Young as a VAT partner in He received the CBE in 1995 for services to taxation policy. The course will provide an essential update to include recent and relevant changes in VAT legislation, changes in HMRC s attitude and policy, recent and relevant tribunal decisions and will draw upon the speaker s own experience to highlight specific areas of difficulty and opportunity. The use of VAT as a cutting edge tool in practice development will be emphasised. Topical tax tips - 10 November 2014 Mike Truman is the editor of Taxation magazine. He has worked in the tax departments of regional, national and international accountancy firms. Prior to his appointment as Taxation editor in 2004, he was a freelance writer and lecturer on tax. Mike became a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Taxation in 1996 with a prize-winning thesis on the law of residence for tax purposes. Mike frequently commentates on tax matters in the press, on TV and on the radio, chairs the judges for the Taxation Awards, and was on the panel for HMRC s first two annual External Engagement Awards Mike will look at some of the latest changes in tax, the opportunities they present and pitfalls that need to be avoided. The content will be particularly relevant to those dealing with individuals and small businesses. While the content will be up-to-the-minute, he will be looking at issues such as: How to structure a business after the changes to partnerships and LLPs, Using the savings rate to extract company profits, Pensions and savings from 2015, Travel expenses after Samadian. Employment law update - 8 December 2014 Peter Jones, Partner, Browne Jacobson LLP Peter specialises in all aspects of employment law, contentious and non-contentious; experienced in advocacy at employment tribunals for both private and public bodies. Browne Jacobson LLP is a full service national law firm with offices in Birmingham, Exeter, London, Manchester and Nottingham. The firm offers a comprehensive range of legal services, with expertise in four key sectors - commercial, public, health and insurance. A practical guide to recent and upcoming changes to employment law. The course provides a good overview of a number of areas of employment law, concentrating on the topics likely to be most useful to you in your day to day dealings with clients and your own staff. Employment law, in particular is an area subject to enormous change, and the course covers a number of key areas.
4 Corporate and Personal insolvency - 9 February 2015 Rachael Wilkinson Chartered accountant and qualified insolvency practitioner 16 years with PwC the last 12 of which have been spent in the Business Recovery Practice. The majority of her career has been focused on mid-market insolvency and insolvency advice to corporates, lenders and individuals in the Midlands. She has also spent time on secondment to the recoveries team within a high street bank The lecture will explain the different types of insolvency process for corporates and individuals and when each process might be used. It will look at who drives the process and what it means for the company or individual, the directors and the creditors as well as examining the role of lenders in such situations, including the impact of bank guarantees. Rachael will cover where to go for advice and the importance of recognising problems at an early stage and some practical hints and tips for you and your clients. She will also touch on any "hot topics" which are relevant at the time of the lecture. The Frog and the Murky Crystal Ball. What will practice be like in 5 years time? - 9 March 2015 Nigel Hughes BA FCA qualified with Deloitte Haskins and Sells and subsequently worked as a manager for two top twenty practices and one smaller firm. Since forming Totteridge Associates in 1991, he has worked with a wide variety of organisations devising and delivering training programmes, lecturing on audit and financial reporting issues and providing consultancy on training, practice management and audit and financial reporting technical issues. Nigel has represented ICAEW as a Training Consultant for many years and on various committees. Just what are the threats faced by the profession over the next 5 years and where do the opportunities lie? Nigel has been observing the changes from long before he qualified in the late seventies something to do with having a father who was a longstanding editor of Taxation magazine and 2 older brothers who became accountants. He spotted the shift to risk based auditing techniques, a number of years before ISAs were released, and he was asking questions about the nature of an accountant s work in Effective Training courses delivered for ICAEW in the late nineties and early 2000s. His crystal ball is no clearer than anyone else s, but he does promise a challenging, entertaining and thought provoking session Accountancy update - 13 April 2015 Guy Loveday BSc (Econ) FCA Guy is a member of PTP and a director of PTP ltd. He is joint author of Butterworth's Financial Reporting and Accounting Service and a member of the lecturing panels for the ICAEW and the ACCA. He specialises in auditing and financial reporting updates for accountants in practice and industry, and in finance courses for members of the wider financial community. He also provides a consultancy service to assist companies in preparing their annual financial statements. The course will include: Updates to FRSSE 2008 involving Residential Management Companies and the Micro Entity Regime What is the point of the micro entity regime? Latest news on the withdrawal of FRSSE 2015 and changes to FRS 102 affecting small companies Preparing for FRS 102 have you been gathering information about fair values at the dates of transition to the standard? Preparing for FRS 102 are you up to speed on FRS 102 s requirements and how they are different from UK GAAP and FRSSE? Any other relevant developments leading up to the course Finance Bill May 2015 Tim Good BA (Oxon) ACA One of the founding partners of The Professional Training Partnership, Tim is also a director of PTP Ltd, PTP Interactive Ltd and Absolute Accounting Software Ltd and is Chairman of The Tax Club. Tim is one of the most prolific lecturers on the post-qualified tax lecture circuit and lectures several times each week to professional audiences all over the country. He has the ability to make even the most obscure tax point crystal clear and the most mundane topic entertaining and informative. This lecture will familiarise participants with the provisions of the current Finance Act. All of the major changes in the Finance Act will be explained, in the context of the clients whose affairs will be affected. Identified planning areas and pitfalls will be covered. Other current developments in taxation as they affect practitioners and their clients may also be included, depending on the size of the Finance Act or Bill.
