As manager at the largest insolvency regulator, she is responsible for conducting monitoring visits. She has been involved in most sectors including national retailers, manufacturing, aerospace and motor industry, food and professional services. Alison has also worked in industry as a management accountant and Group Financial Controller. > Caroline Sumner R3 Caroline is Technical Director at R3 and secretary to the General Technical Committee, having previously headed up the monitoring team for an RPB. She combines her technical knowledge of the current insolvency legislation with practical experience of the insolvency profession to provide technical advice and guidance for members, subscribers and students. > Chris Herron Herron Fisher Chris is a licensed Insolvency Practitioner with over 30 years experience dealing with a range of very different businesses with turnovers varying from tens of thousands of pounds to a hundred million. Chris trained with the Insolvency Service in Manchester, moving to Baker Tilly in the late eighties and then on to management roles in Leeds and Bristol with BDO Binder Hamlyn and Robson Rhodes. In 1993 he joined a smaller practice in Croydon, Neville Eckley, before becoming a partner in Levy Gee in In 2006 Chris established his own practice with Nicky Fisher forming Herron Fisher. Chris is a Fellow of the Insolvency Practitioners Association and R3. > Colin Raeside Nova Consultants On qualifying as a certifi ed accountant with the ACCA, Colin managed an insolvency department at Grant Thornton, before taking on a project coordinating the fi rm s national approach to insolvency, primarily through standardisation, technical and training support. The role also encompassed marketing and practice management, the latter providing him with extensive experience of partnership related issues. Some 15 years on, Colin formed Nova in 2003 with the specifi c aim of providing a similar quality service to smaller practitioner fi rms. > Graham McPhie Moon Beever Graham graduated with Honours in Law from the University of Essex in He attended the College of Law in Guildford and qualifi ed as a solicitor in He has worked for specialist commercial fi rms in London and the South East, gaining considerable experience in all aspects of fi nancially related litigation. Graham works within both the Insolvency & Business Recovery team and also the Commercial Litigation Department. He became a Partner in January > Joanne Harris Compliance Alliance Jo has worked in insolvency for over 19 years, following a short career in law. She started her career in insolvency at PWC and has held senior positions at Grant Thornton and BDO Stoy Hayward before being appointed Director of Technical and Compliance at UHY Hacker Young. For the last fi ve years, she has run her own insolvency training and consultancy company, which also supplies documentation to a leading case management software company. > Joanne Quinn Nova Consultants Having qualifi ed in 2004, Joanne has over 25 years experience of the insolvency profession, she spent seven years with Leonard Curtis in Manchester, before moving to Kroll (now AlixPartners) in 1998, taking up the position as Head of Compliance and Professional Risk in Joining Colin Raeside as a co-director of Nova Consultants (Nova) at the beginning of 2009, she now spends her time helping clients deal with regulation monitoring and compliance management and she also routinely provides technical training and support to clients and the profession. > Kathryn Hiddleston Grant Thornton Kathryn leads the UK restructuring tax team for Grant Thornton UK LLP. Her role includes providing restructuring and rescue advice to distressed businesses or those acquiring from distressed scenarios, giving both pre- and postinsolvency advice, and supplying forensic and investigation expertise in relation to UK and international tax. She co-ordinates the work of any area of tax relating to restructuring, insolvency or investigation including corporate, individual, VAT and customs duties, stamp and employment taxes. Kathryn has 25 years experience of specialising in this area and sits on various committees with HMRC to infl uence policy and draft legislation to aid in restructuring. Recent examples include HMRC s review of the taxation of debt. > Kenneth Marland Harrisons Business Recovery and Insolvency Practitioners Ken qualifi ed as an Insolvency Practitioner in 1996 at the Manchester offi ce of BDO Stoy Hayward before moving to Deloitte in Nottingham. Having joined Harrisons in 1999, Ken has continued to be involved in providing both formal insolvency and informal solutions such as refi nancing, negotiated repayment plans etc, for a broad range of clients in manufacturing and leisure. Ken is a member of the Investigation Committee, the Personal Insolvency Committee and the Practice Guidance Ethics and Standards Committee of his regulators, the Insolvency Practitioners Association, and is a Fellow of R3. > Michelle Butler The Compliance Alliance Michelle is a partner of The Compliance Alliance, which provides compliance reviews, support services, document packs and webinars to insolvency practitioners. Her blog, Insolvency Oracle, has become renowned for its practical and critical analyses of regulatory developments affecting IPs. Michelle spent 15 years working in insolvency practices and then seven years in the Insolvency Practitioners Association, fi rst as Regulation Manager and then as Head of Regulatory Standards and Monitoring. She became an independent consultant in 2013 and a founding member of Resources for IPs LLP t/a The Compliance Alliance in Michelle speaks regularly at R3 events including the R3 SPG Forum and Technical Reviews. She joined the R3 SPG Committee in 2013 and the R3 General Technical Committee in > Simeon Gilchrist Edwin Coe LLP Simeon read Law with French at Leicester and Strasbourg universities, qualifying as a solicitor in With both contentious and transactional insolvency expertise, Simeon advises insolvency practitioners, banks, distressed companies and individuals in a wide range of both corporate and personal insolvency matters. His corporate transactional work has an administration bias with the preparation of business sales being a particular specialism. In personal insolvency matters, Simeon has a specialist European Regulation practice, advising individuals, practitioners and creditors on the application of the European Regulation and what is known as COMI shifting or bankruptcy tourism. Having been a member of R3 for many years, he was delighted to be elected to R3 Council and to become the SPG Committee Chair at the end of > Simon Passfield Guildford Chambers Simon is a specialist insolvency barrister at Guildhall Chambers who undertakes litigation and advisory work in all aspects of corporate and personal insolvency law. He has been consistently recognised as a leading junior in this fi eld by Chambers and Partners and Legal 500 and has appeared in more than 20 reported insolvency cases.

An update of the topical tax issues and the positive discussions currently being held with HMRC as we seek to fi nd solutions to these concerns. This session will also discuss issues surrounding Accelerated Payment Notice (APN) and follower notices which are increasingly becoming a feature in insolvency procedures including, what you need to do as an IP following receipt of an APN and how these should be treated for voting and distribution purposes. This session also highlights prospective changes to legislation ahead following the recent round of HMRC consultations and the impact that these may have on rescue procedures. This session will offer practical tips (and a few war stories) on how to ensure that your court experience goes according to plan. From the best way to present your evidence to what to wear, we will discuss what to do (and what not to do!) when you re called to appear in the witness box.
