1 Croatian American Women s Club P.O. Box Los Angeles, CA userid: admin2 password: croatia2012 Evite & Gmail contact.cawc@gmail.com croatia2012 Adult Membership: 169 Junior Membership: 6 MINUTES OF MEETING MAY 5, 2013 Location: St. Anthony Croatian Parish Center Board Members Present: Joann Bradvica, Helena Herceg Burke, Linda Hurley, Katherine Jordan, Susan Jordan, Andrea Papac Joyce, Mimi Mamic, Stephanie Mundweil, Mary Ann Skoko, and Maryann Zovak-Wieder Board Members Absent: Marianna Buntich, Theresa Majich Goodell, Jeanne Matijasevic, and Sanja Pusnik Strom The Meeting called to order at approximately 1:38 PM. Father Richard Charbel Grbavac, the 10:30 AM Mass celebrant and present in the Parish Center, was called upon to open the CAWC meeting with a prayer and gave a special blessing, followed by the Hail Mary. Membership Mimi reported on the four new applications received. The current membership stands at 175 paid members (6 Juniors). The members present voted to accept the new applicants. Treasurer Susan reported that on the receipt of a communication from the Internal Revenue Service which states that we are now officially designated a NONPROFIT TAX EXEMPT organization under Section 501(c)3, effective March 29, She stated that the request for this status was granted without any follow-up questions or concerns by the IRS. This is the only document that says we are tax exempt. At this time, President Maryann and all of the Board members present, applauded and thanked Susan for the successful filing of our application with the IRS. Susan stated that the entire filing with the IRS was an extremely complex process. She will now work on State documents, which should be a much easier process. She wanted to personally thank Julie Lusich and Stephanie Mundweil for all of their time and assistance. 1 May 5, 2013

2 Susan will obtain Form 990N Notice for Tax Exempt Organizations (for small tax exempt organizations with gross receipts of less than $50,000) which is required to be filed with the IRS annually. This needs to be filed by September 1. Susan further stated that because this designation communication has been received, she plans to notify all donors of this Tax Exempt status, in order to provide them with a formal receipt of any donations made to CAWC. Susan reported that two CAWC checks have not cleared the bank; one issued to CroMade, Inc. for the wine, and the other to Father Ivan Gerovac for the Mass, at the Spring Fling on April 6 th. The bank balance as of today is $7, The April 6 th Spring Fling profit was $2,872. Church Picnic in June President Maryann reported that CAWC will not have an official booth at St. Anthony s Church picnic in June, because the Coffee Cart and/or Ice Cream Cart ideas have already been taken. In speaking with Vjeko Kosor, President of the Church Council, he indicated that individual assistance is always welcome and needed for the picnic at various stations. Signup sheets will soon be provided. Discussion was held on the long lines at the Ticket Booths ; and that a solution to this problem would be the presale of tickets. This suggestion will be transmitted via to Vjeko. May 26 (Sunday) Croatian Independence Day Street Festival, San Pedro Helena stated that she has received permission for CAWC to have a Membership Sign-Up table at the San Pedro Street Festival on Sunday, with a setup time of 11:00 AM. She plans to open and will provide a schedule (one-half to one hour increments) for coverage by other Board and/or CAWC members, if possible. President Maryann stated that this morning s Bone Marrow Drive for Melita Serdar was very successful. The parishioners of St. Anthony s were very kind and supportive of Melita s parents. They had 19 young and healthy people sign a consent form and test. She stated that although this event was not sponsored by CAWC, she wanted to thank everyone for their prayers and kind thoughts, and acknowledge that Melita was a new member of the Club. She further stated that another drive will be held at the San Pedro Dom, the afternoon of the Street Festival. Revlon Walk May 11 Helena reported that 22 people have registered for this walk, and that $1,500 has been received in donations. Andrea asked whether last minute walkers would be welcome, because her daughter who is coming into town would like to participate. Helena stated that last minute walkers can register that morning; however, the walk begins at 6:30 AM. Helena stated that she had a banner made for this event. Discussion was held on the wardrobe for the CAWC walkers. She plans to wear something Croatian. Due to the shortness of time in obtaining uniforms for the CAWC, Mimi suggested the colors be something red for the women and white T-shirts for the men. 2 May 5, 2013

3 Special Announcement MISETIC - Sunday, May 19, 2013, 3:00 PM, at the Croatian Dom, San Pedro. General Gotovina s defense attorney to discuss the Gotovina case. Suggested donation: $10. Brenda Brkusic & Mia Corak Slavenska Film Project Discussion was held on CAWC sponsoring a fundraising event for this Film Project. President Maryann stated that Brenda would provide a 15-minute film presentation. This documentary film project is supported by PBS SoCal and the cost of the film is covered by the Foundation. Following discussion, it was agreed that CAWC does not have sufficient funds to sponsor a fundraiser for this project. However, it was determined that the best solution would be to put out information about this project to all CAWC membership via an appeal. Donations earmarked for her project can be sent through CAWC for the Mia Project. The donations would be tax deductible for the donors. Fall Fashion Show Board members Sanja, Jeanne, and Marianna, who are reviewing possible venues for this event, were not present at today s meeting. As reported at the last meeting, Sanja does have ladies who are willing to model; and donations of the following items: clothing (including a wedding dress), hair and make-up, and music. President Maryann stated a venue for the Fashion Show should be finalized as soon as possible, so that the program for this event can begin. She will encourage the Social Chairs for this event to provide a comprehensive report at next month s meeting. Helena stated that she will visit a few venues in the Redondo Beach area and report on them next month. Andrea suggested that Helena visit the Ayers Hotel. Katherine Jordan spoke about hosting a Door Prize luncheon/tea at her home for the members about a month prior to the Fashion Show, in order to raise money to purchase door prizes. This was a traditional event held at her home before a Fashion Show and was always quite enjoyable and successful. Medjugorje Ivan, Guest Speaker Helena stated that she still has not heard from Father Ivan Gerovac regarding this event. She plans to contact him about sending an invitation letter and will report at the next meeting. Arcadia Aboretum Concert Series Fowler Museum at UCLA PAYPAL However, Theresa, in a text message sent to Andrea, indicated she would begin work on this project now that the Club has received its Section 501(c)3 tax exempt status. 3 May 5, 2013

4 Christmas Boat Parade Mailing Lists A brief discussion was held on the status of the Club s mailing lists. Mary Ann stated that two lists will be maintained. One list would be for General Mailing for such events as Casino Night, a picnic, etc. The other list would be a Ladies only list for events such as the Fashion Show. The Members only list for evites is maintained by Mimi; however, Mary Ann should also be notified of new members, so that they can be added to the Ladies only list. The lists will be finalized and filed in the Dropbox as soon as possible. The lists should be reviewed by all Board members and any additions, deletions, or corrections should be submitted to Mary Ann. CAWC Merchandise Helena presented a white Cap and a Tote Bag with the Club s Logo. She received compliments on them from the Board members. Mimi stated that Jeanne will several new logo choices to us for review. 5 Meeting Minutes Discussion was held on the preparation of Minutes for CAWC meetings. Susan stated that all OUTSTANDING Minutes of CAWC Board Meetings need to be finalized and filed in the Dropbox as soon as possible. Now that the Club has been granted a NONPROFIT TAX EXEMPT STATUS, Susan stressed the need and urgency to have all Club records and files in good order, should the IRS ever decide to audit them. Helena stated that Minutes for three Board meetings are still outstanding November, 2012; January 6; and January 27 th. Considerable discussion was held on the absence and lack of performance by the Club s secretary in the duties of the position. Many of the Secretary s duties are being performed by the President and/or Vice President, Treasurer, and Senior Advisor Mary Ann Skoko. It was decided by all present that FOR THE MINUTES, an ADMINISTRATIVE TECHNICAL CHANGE would be made and the Minutes for future Board meetings would become the responsibility of Mary Ann Skoko. ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 3:00 PM Respectfully submitted, Mary Ann Skoko 5 May 5, 2013
