WecontinuetohostseveralcommunityprogramsincludingtheHolidayFoodandGiftBasketProgram, theprairiehomekid safter^schoolprogram,al^anon,andotherreligiousgroups,whoeitherdonot havetheirownchurchhomeorneedmorespaceforcertainevents.wealsohostedourannualsummer FestivalonAugust24. InanefforttostrengthenUnited'svisionforthefutureandcontinuetodeveloppartnershipsinthe widercommunity,thecouncilgaveapprovalforunitedtoengagelutheransocialservicesofillinoisto facilitateataskforcefromthecongregationtoinvestigatepossibilitiesforspecificwaysforustoserve ourcommunity.thatgroup,"settingthetable,"metthroughouttheyeartoassessourassetsand explorewaystobetterfulfillourmissionasachurchinthisneighborhood. Iwouldliketoexpressappreciationtothemembersofthechurchcouncilandthecommittees,andto SharonStadtwald(United sadministrativeassistant)andcherylpinter(united scustodian)fortheir hardworkanddedicationthisyear. 4 REPORTOFTHEPASTOR TheveryfirstscripturereadingthatweencounteredonthefirstSundayof2015providesuswithplenty ofencouragingwordsfordoingwhateverwemightneedtoaccomplishinthesedays: Arise,shine;for yourlighthascome (Isaiah60:1).Howmorehopefulofamessagecouldyouexpecttohearatthe beginningofanewyear?god slighthascometoshineonus.maythatindeedbethecaseasweplan andcarryouttheworkofgod speopleintheplacethatunitedlutheranchurchcallshomeinthe comingyear. ItishelpfulforustohighlightsomeofthethingsthatUnitedLutheranChurchhasdoneoverthepast year,andeachpageofthisannualreportwillprovideanumberofdetails.ithinkmytaskhereisto considerawide^angleviewofourministrytogether.attheoutsetof2014,united ssettingthetable teambeganlookingathowthecongregationmightbemoreintentionalaboutourservicetothelarger community. OurSettingtheTablegroupthatmeteachmonthwithPastorDanSchwickfromLutheranSocialServices ofillinoisalsointeractedwithanumberofleadersfromawiderangeofotherorganizations.wewanted toknowsomeofthewaysinwhichwemightbettermeetneedsofpeoplewithinthelargercommunity. Intheprocesswegainedrenewedappreciationfortheworkthatmanyofourexistingministrypartners alreadydo;suchaspads,theoakparkriverforestfoodpantry,andprevail.wenotedhowtheyallare tryingtoguidetheirguestsandclientsawayfromdependenceonaidprogramstogreaterself^ sufficiency.pads,forexample,doesnotjustprovideemergencyhousingforthehomeless,butthrough thingsliketheirhousetohomeprogramtheyprovidegenuinesupporttofamiliesinobtaininglong^ termhousing. ThefruitsofourSettingtheTableconversationsoverthepastyearhaveatleasttwosignificant implicationsforourfutureworkasacongregation: 1. Ourcongregationalleadershipiscommittedtoworkingmoreintentionallywithother partnersthatcoulduseunitedlutheranchurch sbuildinginordertoministertovarious socialneedswithinourcommunity;and 2. WeareexpandingourannualLentensoupsuppersforfiveWednesdayeveningsthis yearintocommunitymealsthatwillbeopentoanyonewhomightvaluethem.perhaps thecommunitymealswillbeamongthewaysinwhichweregularlyreachouttothe communityinthefuture. Whileneitheroftheseideasareallthatshockingorradical,theybothmovethiscongregationinto ministeringwithpeoplewhoarenotalreadymembersorwhodonotattendworshipwithusonsunday mornings.sowehavebeguntakingconcreteactionsthatdemonstratehowservinggod smissionleads ustoworkwithothersinourcommunity.myhopeisthattheseareonlythefirststepstowardeven greateroutwardmovementsthatwewillbetakingasacongregationin2015andoverthenextfew yearsaswell. United scongregationcouncilhasalreadycalledforavision2020teamthatwillplannewoutreach efforts,andthecouncilhasalreadyallocatedsomespecialfundsthatwehavereceivedinrecentmonths 4
5 toenablethevisionteamtoundertakespecificprojectswiththegoalofservingagreaternumberof peopleinthecommunity. Soatthebeginningof2015,wecananticipatenewpossibilitiesanddevelopingmorerelationshipswith peopleinourcommunity.that sagreatstart Arise,shine;foryourlighthascome. PastorDennisBushkofsky [Note:'This'report'was'a'significant'part'of'the'sermon'for'January'4,'2015'as'well.]' REPORTOFTHEDIRECTOROFMUSIC Thelastfewmonthsof2014haveheldmanymusicalblessingsatUnitedLutheran.Whatajoytobepart ofacongregationthatsingssowell,andwhofindsuchjoyinavarietyofmusicintheworshipservice.it hasbeenmyprivilegetogettoknowandworkwiththejubilatesingers,astheyhaveaddedafew memberstotheirranksandhaveworkedthroughawidevarietyofrepertoire.wewereableto collaboratewithseveraltypesofinstruments^^bells,drums,oboe,andtrumpet,tohaveasmuch varietyofcolorandstyleaspossible.thechildren'sgroupwithsongandpercussionworkedhardto prepareforchristmaseve.manythankstotammydianovskyforherleadershipwiththe kidsorganizationally,themusiclibraryreceivedagreatboonwiththeadditionofnew(tous)file cabinets,whichprovideanopportunitytosortthroughourextensivecollectionofmusic.ourorgan technicianswereabletorepairtheleatherissuethathadrenderedthechoirdivisionoftheorgan unusableformostofthesummerandfall,andwillbeprovidinguswithestimatesforfuturerepairsin theshortandlongterm.meantime,itiswonderfultohaveaccesstothefullrangeofcolorsour instrumentpossesses. Weanticipatemusicalgrowthin2015,aswecontinuetoaddnewchoralanthems,hymns,andinLent, revisitachantsettingoftheliturgy.wehopetotapintomusiciansinthesurroundingareatojoinwith usforspecialservicesandtoenjoythegiftsprovidedbyourmembermusicians.wewouldloveto welcomeadditionalchoirmembersin2015andanticipatefindingcreativewaystouseourinstrumental collectionofbellsandpercussioninworship.wehopetocontinueunitedlutheran'straditionof participationmusicallyincommunityevents,suchastheinterfaiththanksgivingserviceandthetwelfth NightConcert. CHURCHOFFICEREPORT Thegreatestchangesinthechurchofficein2014werephysicalones.Theoldlightinginthemainoffice andintheworkroomwerereplacedwithmuchbrighterandmoreenergy^efficientlighting.theold officefurnitureinbothroomswasalsoreplacedwithnewerandmoreattractivefurniture,thankstoin^ kinddonationsfromothernon^profitorganizations.theresulthasbeentocreateamorepleasantand moreusefulworkenvironment.thenewfurnituretakesupnomoreroomthantheold,butprovides morefilespaceandmoreworkspaceduetoanewofficeconfiguration.theintroductionofa conferencetableandchairsintheworkroom,makesituseableasaconferenceroomaswellasa workroomwithouthinderingusualofficeprojects.inaddition,thearchivecommitteewasveryactivein removingoldfilesandpublicationsfromtheofficeandmovingthemtothethirdfloorforsorting.in 2015additionaloldermaterialwillbetransferredtothearchiveroom. In2014workhascontinuedonpopulatingthemembershipdatabaseandpreparinganewchurch directory.inthecomingyearbaptismandconfirmationdateswillbeaddedtothedatabase,andanew directorywillbeforthcoming. Otherfunctionsoftheofficecontinuetobekeepingmembersandthecommunity/prospective membersinformedaboutchurchnewsandupcomingeventsthroughthe'candle,midweekmoments, andthechurch swebsiteandfacebookpage.the'candlecontinuestobedistributedmonthlyfrom 6
7 SeptemberthroughJunewithacombinedissueforJuly/August.The'Candleisavailableinbothaprint version(pickedupatthechurchorsentbymail)andinanelectronicversiononthewebsite.members arealsoupdatedonchurchandcommunityeventsbymidweekmoments,whichisanelectronic newslettersentweeklyby .in2014,midweekmomentsbegantobedistributedusingmailchimp, whichhasresultedinmoreuniformformattingandaccesstostatisticsonuseofmidweekmoments. Inthefall,SandyWilliamscoordinatedthecollectionofmaterialsneededtoassemble6babycarekits, 40personalcarekits,and60schoolkits.TheassembledkitsaregiventoLutheranWorldRelieffor distributionthroughouttheworld. InDecemberUnitedprovidedspaceforgiftscollectedbytheHolidayFoodandGiftBasketfor distributiontothoseinneedthroughoutoakparkandriverforest.unitedalsoheldits24 th Cookie Walk.PartoftheproceedsweregiventotheWomenoftheELCAinsupportoftheironlinemagazine. Stewardship OurannualstewardshipappealisvitallyimportanttofulfilltheministryandmissionvisionofUnited LutheranChurch.WeareaskedtoconsiderthegiftsGodhasgiventoeachofusforgrowthaspersons 9
10 offaithandasstewardsoftheresourceswehavereceived.weareeachaskedtoconsiderhowto increaseourownparticipationandtoconsiderourfinancialresourcesandgivingtosupportthemission andministryatunited. Toanticipatethefinancialgivingfor2015,astewardshipappealletterwithacommitmentcardwassent tomembersthisfall.duringthesundayservicesinnovemberjohnhalvorson,erikjensen,andlinda Leifersharedtheirthoughtsongivingofourtimeandtreasure. Theresponsehasbeenverypositive.Twenty^fivegivingunitsinourchurchhavesubmittedcommitment cardsfor2015foratotalof$120,736.thisisa9.6increasefromthetotaldollarspledgedfor2014and alsoanincreaseoverlastyearinthenumberofgivingunitssubmittingcommitmentcards.thankyou foryoursupportforourchurchandtheministryhere. JohnHalvorson,ErikJensen,LindaLiefer,ZanLofgren StewardshipCommittee SETTINGTHETABLETASKFORCEREPORT TheSettingtheTabletaskforcemetapproximatelyoncepermonthfromNovember2013untilJanuary 2015.Taskforcememberswere:PastorDennisBushkofsky,TammyDianovsky,MaxGuenthner,Tom Guenthner,ChrisJohnson,ZanLofgren,RichLiefer,KathiSchmitt,andLaVerneSchwartz.Weare gratefultorev.danschwickfromlutheransocialservicesofillinois,whoprovidedsuperbleadershipas thefacilitatorofouryear^longprocess.wearealsogratefultothemetropolitanchicagosynodofthe ELCA,forprovidingagrantwhichfinanced90percentofthecostsinvolved.Theprimarygoalofthetask forcewastoinvestigateanddiscussactionsthatunitedlutheranmighttaketobecomemoreinvolved initsimmediatecommunity,and,specifically,todiscoverwaysinwhichthecongregationmightmore effectivelyprovideservicetoitsneighborsbymeetingneedsthatarecurrentlynotaddressedbyother communityresources.theintentionofthetaskforceistoprovideadviceandrecommendationstothe ChurchCouncilandtotheVision2020committeeforimplementationinthenextfewyears. Theinitialprocessofdefiningourimmediatecommunity,andthesubsequentprocessofdiscussingthe why andthe how ofservingourneighborswasguidedbythreescriptural touchstones, provided bypastorschwick.thefirst,fromluke4,isjesus explicitdefinitionatthebeginningofhisministryof hisearthlymission: Hehasanointedmetobringgoodnewstothepoor.Hehassentmetoproclaim releasetothecaptivesandrecoveryofsighttotheblind,tolettheoppressedgofree. Thesecond, frommatthew25,invokesthelastjudgment,anddescribesjesus expectationsforourconductas God sagentsonearth:... foriwashungryandyougavemenothingtoeat,iwasthirstyandyougave menothingtodrink,iwasastrangerandyoudidnotinvitemein,ineededclothesandyoudidnot clotheme,iwassickandinprisonandyoudidnotlookafterme. Theyalsowillanswer, Lord,whendid weseeyouhungryorthirstyorastrangerorneedingclothesorsickorinprison,anddidnothelpyou? Hewillreply, TrulyItellyou,whateveryoudidnotdoforoneoftheleastofthese,youdidnotdofor me. ThethirdtouchstoneistheparableoftheGoodSamaritan,fromLuke10,inwhichJesusdefines foruswhoourneighborsare,andparticularlydemandsthatwenotignoreordisregardthoseofour neighborswholiebleedingonthemarginsoflife shighway.attentiontothesetouchstonesreminded usthatourprimaryobjectiveinreachingouttoourneighborsshouldbeservicefreelygiven,ratherthan serviceprimarilyofferedasameanstotheendofincreasingourcongregationalsizeorincome. 10
11 ThetaskforceconcludedthatUnitedLutheran sservingofitsneighborswouldbemostefficientand effectiveifitwerefocusedonthenortheastcornerofoakpark,includingnearbyareasofoakparkand Chicago.Webeganbyinvestigatingwhatsomeofthemajorneedsofthatcommunitymightbe,and whichofthoseneedsarecurrentlyunmet,orpoorlymet,byexistingcommunitygroupsoragencies.in thisinitialprocessweinterviewedrepresentativesofanumberoflocalagencies,bothinone^on^one settings,andbyinvitingthoserepresentativestoourmonthlymeetingtodiscusswiththetaskforceasa whole.groupswhoserepresentativesweinterviewedincluded:oakparkelementarydistrict97, includingsocialworkersfromhatchandwhittierelementaryschoolsandbrooksmiddleschool,oak ParkRiverForestHighSchool,WestSuburbanPADS,OakParkTownshipSeniorServices,OakParkYouth Services,WestCookYMCA,PrairieHomeKidsafter^schoolprogram,OakParkVillagezoningandbuilding codecommissioners,hephzibah,andprevail. FrominformationobtainedthroughinterviewsconductedfromapproximatelyJanuarythroughApril, thetaskforceidentifiedseveralexpressedcommunityneedsthatwerenotfully,orevenpartially, addressedbyexistingcommunityresourcesandwereneedsthatunitedmightbeabletomarshal significantresourcestowardsaddressing.theseinclude:1)emergencyshelterforperiodsextending fromovernighttoseveralweeksormonths.itisparticularlydifficulttofindsecureemergencyshelter thatcanbemadeavailableonshortnoticetofamilies,especiallythoseinimminentdangerofdomestic violenceorabuse.2)assistancetorecentlyhomelesspeopletransitioningtostablehousing.although apartmentsarecurrentlyavailable,recentlyhomelesspeopleoftenexperiencesignificantdifficulty furnishingandequippingtheseapartmentsforlonger^termoccupation.3)adequateafter^school supervisionforchildrenwhodonothaveaparentorcaregiverathomeintheafternoon.whilemultiple communityresourcesarecurrentlyofferedtoparentsneedingafter^schoolcareforelementary^school agechildren(gradesk^5),thereiscurrentlyasignificantdeficiencyinoakparkofadequate,appropriate resourcesdirectedtowardsmiddleschool^agedchildren(grades6^8). Wethenexaminedourcongregationalassetsandresources,anddiscussedhowthesemightbebestput touseinaddressingoneormoreoftheseidentifiedcommunityneeds.thetaskforceidentifiedthe mostsignificantassetsthatourcongregationmightapplytothesecommunityneedsasbeingour individualfinancialassets,ourvolunteertimeandlabor,andtheassetofcurrentlyunusedorunder^ usedspaceinourphysicalplant.ofthesethree,weidentifiedourphysicalspaceastheassetthatcould bemosteffectivelyandefficientlydirectedtowardcommunityneeds.indiscussinghowthischurch s currentlyunusedspacecouldbeusedtobenefitthecommunity,wenotedthatacomparablephysical structurethatmightbeusefulasacommunitycenterdoesnotcurrentlyexistinthiscornerofoakpark, outsideofunitedlutheran.thepotentialforunited sphysicalplanttobeputtogreateruseasa communityassetexcitedandinspiredthetaskforce. Infurtherdiscussionfocusedonmatchingourassetswiththethreeneedswehadidentified,weagreed thatourspacecouldbewell^suitedforthesiteofaprogramthatwouldprovideasafe,reliableand affordableplaceformiddleschoolstudents,particularlyfrombrooksmiddleschool,tocometointhe afternoonwhentheirparentsarenotathome.wegenerallyfeltthatuseofourspaceasanemergency familyshelterhadmerit,butpresentedlogisticaldifficulties,andwouldofferlessofasustained opportunityforwide^spreadcongregationalinvolvement.wealsofeltthatwecouldofferthe congregationtheopportunitytofacilitatefurnishingandequippingtransitionalhousingforthe homelessbyfinancialdonationtowestsuburbanpads,whichassembles housetohome kitsfor distributiontoitsclients.thetaskforcefinallyconcludedthatthebestapplicationofourassetsasa congregation thatwouldinvolvethelargestnumberofourmembersinasignificantway,andwould makethegreatestcommunityimpact wouldbetoprovidespaceandvolunteersforsomeformof 11
12 secular,multi^generationalcommunitycenterfornortheasternoakpark.atthebeginning,thismight consistofasupervisedafter^schooldrop^incenter,oneormoredaysperweek,formiddleschool studentswholiveintheimmediateneighborhood.thepossibilityofthewestcookymcaworkingwith thecongregationtodevelopsuchaprogram(aswellasotherprograms)isespeciallyintriguing.we mightalsobeabletoquicklyidentifywaysinwhicholderneighborhoodresidentscouldusethebuilding onweekdays,alongthelinesofthesewersandquilterscurrentlyusingthefellowshiphallarea. Wehavediscussedsomewaystobeginmakingourspaceavailabletoourneighborsinthecommunityin anopenandgenerousway.wewouldliketodevelopsomesortof communitytable suppers,perhaps involvingfamiliesparticipatinginourcurrentaffiliatedafter^schoolprogram.pastordennishas suggestedthatweopenourtraditionallentenwednesdaysoupsupperstothecommunity,andhas alreadybeendevelopingwaystopublicizethisinvitation. Weareexcitedaboutthepotentialthatourbuildinghasforprovidingasiteforacommunitycenterthat servesnotonlyourcongregants,butmanyofourneighborsaswell.wehaveconcludedthatthebest pathtowardsustainingathrivingcongregationworshipinginthisbuildingandusingittoitsmaximal potentialliesinlookingoutwardratherthaninward.developingsuchacommunitycenterwouldalso allowusasacongregationtomeetthechallengesofthethreescriptural touchstones thathaveguided ourdiscussiontothispoint,andinvolveamaximumnumberofourmembersinmeaningfulandfulfilling servicetoourneighbors. 12

15 RoofRepairs Inlate2013repairworkwasundertakenontheslateroofandsomegutterrepair.Partofthisworkwas completedthatdecemberandtheremainderofthatworkwascompletedin2014alongwithsome additionalcaulkingandsealingaroundthethirdfloorwindows.sofartherepairsappeartohave stoppedtheleaksinthegym,butthisisanareathatwilllikelyrequirefurtherattentioninthenear future. PhysicalPlantRepairs/Maintenance During2014,anumberofrequiredrepairsweremadetothephysicalplantofULC.TheofficeA/C systemwasrepairedandcheckedperthemaintenanceagreement.theheatingsystemforthechurch wascheckedseveraltimesduring2014andmaintenanceonthepumpmotorsrequiredfollow^upvisits. Thesystemshouldnowbeoperatingnormally.Thefirealarmsystem,installedtoallowhostingtheafter schoolprogram,receiveditsannualinspectionandtesting.inaddition: Newlightingwasinstalledinthechurchoffice.Electricalrepairsweremadesuchthatthe outsidesignonridgelandnowworks. Newwirelessdoorbellswereinstalledwhichcanalertgroupsmeetinginthebasementrooms andonthesecondfloor.thisimprovesbuildingsecurity. AnewAEDunit,donatedbytheBergs,wasinstalled. Inlate2014thechurchreceived newtous donatedfurnitureforthechurchofficeand archivesstorage.thisupgradeincludedadesk,lateralfilecabinets,bookcaseandotherstorage cabinet,aconferenceroomtableandchairs. InFebruary,thebackalleydoor,onceagain,encounteredsomegraffitiproblems.Thistime, removalwaseasier,andtodate,theproblemhasnotrecurred.
