2 P a g e 2 P r e s i d e n t s R e p o r t Spring is just around the corner! Because of volunteers like Lorraine, we were able to produce this spring edition of FGCC s newsletter...thanks Lorraine! Much has happened since the last issue of the newsletter (December 2011). We launched our new website last April at We also had successful fall and winter sessions for FGCC s new Zumba and Yoga programs, and Family Movie Nights have been well attended every second Friday. Maureen Andreychuk, Laura Thorne, Don Freiling and Todd Buchanan, all long-time volunteers and Board members, stepped down from the Board this past spring. The many hours, effort and talent they gave to this community is acknowledged and appreciated, and heartfelt thanks go to each of them...we will miss you! One of the biggest changes was the hiring of Kelly Milne, Administrative Coordinator, and Allison Drummond, Program and Grant Coordinator. Both are providing much-needed administrative support to the Board and staff. We are glad to have them on board! Colin Holowachuk recently joined the Board to fulfill the role of Sports Director. With spring sports registration gearing up, we welcome him and are happy to provide our support. An online survey ran for a number of weeks, and while we did not receive as many responses as we d hoped for, we did gather valuable feedback and ideas from respondents. As a result, we have some exciting new programs and workshops in development for spring, summer and fall. 3 P a g e 3 F a m i l y F u n Family Movie Nights There is still time to join us every second Friday until April 5,2013 at the Hobson site. FREE admission, free popcorn, canteen open. Children 5 years and under must be accompanied by and adult. Children 6-12 years old must be accompanied by an adult, or be signed in and out by an adult. Movie titles will be posted on our website one week prior. A big THANK YOU goes out to Nadine Chappellaz (@couponwinnipeg) for lending the FCGG a number of family movies for our free movie night. Playgroup Looking for a fun place to spend the morning making new friends? Join us at the Hobson site, Tuesday mornings from 9:30-11:15am. We provide coffee and tea for the adults, and playtime, a story and crafts for kids ages 0-5 years. Drop by anytime for $2.00 per family. The more new friends the better! 4 P a g e 4 2 n d a n n u a l S h i n n y T o u r n a m e n t FGCC s 2nd annual 4 on 4 Shinny Tournament was a big success! Eight teams enjoyed great weather and lots of good hockey. The Post Pounders were crowned champs this year and won the highly coveted honor of getting their picture displayed in the trophy case at the Hobson site. Thank you to all who volunteered, participated and came out to cheer. We look forward to another great time next year!

Our main halls can accommodate both small and large groups for special events such as birthday parties, wedding/baby showers, team wind-up parties, family gatherings, art shows and community meetings. 7 P a g e 7 S c h o l a r s h i p O p p o r t u n i t i e s Doug Dent Memorial Scholarship This is a $500 scholarship awarded annually to a grade 12 graduating student of Vincent Massey Collegiate who has used her/his leadership and citizenship to help with volunteer activities at the Fort Garry Community Centre during her/his time as a registered student at Vincent Massey. Selection criteria is based upon the following: The number of hours volunteered at the FGCC. The extent to which the student has demonstrated leadership and good citizenship. The impact of the students work at the FCGG. Jim Hunt Memorial Scholarship This is a $250 scholarship awarded annually to a student of Vincent Massey Collegiate. To be eligible for this award the student must: have been a resident of east or west Fort Garry (east of Waverly St) for the past 5 years. have a passion for all sports, particularly football, hockey, basketball, lacrosse or volleyball. not necessarily be a top athlete in any sport, but he/she must demonstrate a strong passion to play or coach. work hard academically and show a desire to help others, but not necessarily be the top student in the class. continue on to a post-secondary institution. be an active volunteer in the community and display a willingness to assist his/her peers. Volunteer work must occur between September 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013, and must benefit others and enrich the Fort Garry community or the environment at FGCC.
