2 Rocky Wilson President Brief note from afar My report will be rather short this month as my wife Debi and I are in Switzerland seeking ways to continually improve our club. (Just kidding) However, if given the choice between spending the rest of my life hiking the Alps or playing badminton and swimming at our club in Manhattan Beach, we would definitely choose the club. 3 One new application for regular membership: Yea-Lan Chiang 3 returning members waiting to re-enter MBBC: Halpine, Humbarger, and Pfaff No new regular members No resignations 83 families on the waiting list, which is taking about 3 years. We are looking for a volunteer to be our MBBC board librarian to organize and keep track of MBBC board documents in exchange for workday credits. Please contact Nancy Andreas if you are interested. Nancy Andreas vicepresident@mbbadmintonclub.com Terence Tchen Treasurer Treasurer Report One of the least enjoyable tasks as Treasurer (and there are many unenjoyable tasks) is collecting past due receivables. Accounts may also become past due due to unpaid guest fees and honor bar charges, missed workday and meeting fines, as well as not making timely payment on quarterly dues. I encourage everyone to review their quarterly statements when they arrive (May, August, November and February) to see if they have incurred any charges. This is especially true for those with automatic withdrawal or those who have automatic bill pay set for a fixed quarterly amount equal to their

4 quarterly dues. A review of the August statement is especially important as that statement typically includes the missed meeting and workday fines for the prior fiscal year. So just how big a past due problem do we have? At the end of March, we had over $15,500 of receivables that were more than 90 days past due! And this was after a significant effort to collect (it was over $18,700 at the beginning of March). This is really unfair to the vast majority of members who pay on time. I have brought names up to the Board of people who are significantly past due and recommended termination of their membership. I anticipate there will be additional names brought up at the next Board meeting. Under the Club s By-Laws, I am permitted to conspicuously post the name of each member, with the amount of financial indebtedness. I d like to get your feedback on whether I should put this information in a big sign up in the lobby at next month s semiannual meeting, have it playing on a continuous loop on one of the TV screens, include it in the mailing for next month s semi-annual meeting, or include it in next month s Shuttlecock. I m open to other suggestions too! For those of you who with past due amounts, you can avoid the consequences of account delinquency by paying your past due amounts. The Club s website has the mailing address of where to send payment ( ). If you can t pay it all off at once, contact me and if there are extenuating circumstances, we might be able to work out a payment plan. My address is Treasurer@mbbadmintonclub.com. At next month s semi-annual meeting, you will be asked to vote on proposed amendments to the By-Laws. One of the amendments deals specifically with delinquent accounts. I hope you ll read the amendment and vote in favor of it. Some final words about next month s meeting don t forget to sign in! If you don t sign in, you will not get credit for attending the meeting. If

5 you proxied the November 2017 meeting, you cannot proxy the May 2018 meeting too. If proxy both meetings, you will get no meeting credit for either meeting. The only way to get meeting credit for a proxy is if you attend in person the other semi-annual meeting. See you next month! SPOILER ALERT!! In January, I volunteered to serve another year on the Board. In February, I was informed that my name would not be considered for next year s Board. No reason was given..

6 In April, I finally met with the Nominating Committee (the five past presidents) and listened carefully to their arguments on why they are replacing me. Even though I disagree with their rationale, the Shuttlecock is not an appropriate forum to respond to the Nominating Committee s decision. I want to thank our President, Rocky Wilson and current Board of Directors for their tireless work on behalf of the Club. However, I DO intend to run for Adult Badminton Chair and will let the membership decide at the General Meeting to be held on Sunday May 20th. Peter Steinbroner adultbadminton@mbbadmintonclub.com Yuko Kawasaki Junior Badminton Chair Another exciting month for Juniors! April was another exciting month for our Juniors. MCHS hosted a tournament and won medals across all five events. The JV team continues to practice hard and gain match play experience in both head to head competition with other schools, and at HS tournaments. Coordinating matches with other coaches and getting tournament entries in on time is a lot of work. A huge thank you to McKenna Wilson & her assistant Rocky for all of their hard work. 7 Dave Richardson House Chair NEXT WORKDAY SATURDAY, May 12th 8:00 am 12:00 pm. Faith Lyons New Construction Chair New Construction Report In March the Board authorized a Reserve Study for the club. This is an analysis of all the physical components of the facilities, how long they are expected to last from new, how many years are left on their useful lives, and how much they cost to be replaced/repaired today. From this, a number is calculated for how much we should be putting aside each year so that we ll have enough to cover these costs as they arise. We re still tweaking the analysis and I ll report on the final version at the May General Meeting. For an example of what s in the Study, we have 24 exterior light fixtures that are expected to last 15 years. They have 8 years of remaining life and are estimated to cost $2,750 to replace today. So, for this element we should have been setting aside $183 per year

8 (inflated every year) to replace them when they fail ($2,750 15=$183). This study is an invaluable planning tool for the club. Our facilities are 40+ years old, and we need to have a plan for how to keep them functional. Our income is essentially fixed, so we won t have the capacity to meet big capital improvements expenses when they come up (and they will come up as the facilities age) unless we have a Reserve Fund. To implement a Reserve Fund, we need to have an operating budget for the club. Right now, we operate on a cash basis, without a budget, so it s hard to know when we can and cannot prudently afford proposed improvements. I m hopeful that next year s Treasurer will develop a budget and implement monthly transfers into the Reserve Fund. Any parties of less than 10 people will be managed by the Entertainment Chair for scheduling conflicts. Private parties from people require approval of the Entertainment Chair. Private parties over 20 people require approval of the Board. If in doubt, contact the Entertainment Chair. No private parties on Fridays, weekends or holidays starting Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
