1 BISHOP SEBASTIAN COUNCIL NO February 2018 Volume 57, Issue 8 KNIGHTS REPORTER Grand Knight s Report - STEVE RADZIMINSKI It is hard to believe that God has called three of our members to Himself within a month, but God has seen fit to call Brothers Paul Pekowitz, Edward Eichelberger, and Gerald Heilman. Please remember them and their families in your prayers. Please also remember those who are ailing. I have been receiving good news from our Membership Director, PGK Michael Mank, about his recruitment efforts with the help of the Council members. It is possible that February will get us over half way to our membership quota. Star Council is definitely within reach. Please keep up your efforts. We have been having difficulties with the phone tree, a software glitch and not incorrect phone numbers. I have contacted the programmer, and will stop using the tree until it is fixed. In the meantime, we will ask the Stevenson s to keep us up to date using and Facebook postings. Lent starts on February 14, Use the time well to prepare for Easter. God Bless! Inside this issue Chancellor Report... 2 Service Reports... 2 DOSEAS Report... 9 Council Calendar Deacon Don Cupps Knights of Columbus - Marlowe Agency 600 Fairmount Avenue Suite 100 Towson, MD don.cupps@kofc.org Plan for this Tax Day and into the Future April 15 (tax day) is right around the corner. It s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a tax-savings vehicle. Or perhaps someone has tried to convince you to open an account, touting the rate of interest that money in one of these accounts can earn. Let me join the chorus of folks encouraging you to open or add funds to an annuity, but for a different reason. Certainly, contributing money to a Knights of Columbus annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And, our annuities do pay a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. Opening or adding to an annuity for these reasons, however, strikes me as taking a short-term view of a product that is designed to provide long-term security. How much security? How does retirement income that you cannot outlive guaranteed sound to you? (Continued on page 10)

6 Retention Chairman s Report PGK Michael Colbourne ( ) MATTHEW 5:14-30 Use your God-given talents to continue to build God s kingdom here on Earth. Our Council needs: An administrator to maintain Council roster spreadsheet A marketer to advertise our Council within the Parishes we support Wear your badge Please wear your badge at every Church function to be recognized as a Knight of Columbus for our Council. If you do not have a badge, please contact the Retention Director. Your Parish needs If you know of any services your Parish needs, please provide the information to the Retention Director. Knights Reporter Please contact the Retention Chairman if you know of a Council member or a Widow of a deceased Council member who wants to receive the monthly Knight Reporter by or delivered as a printed document. State Convention 2018 Steve Ransdell ( ) is requesting assistance for the State Convention in May 2018 Specifically, volunteers are needed for one or more sessions. Responsibilities include helping kids with crafts, supervising games and escorting kids to the bathrooms. Steve and his wife, Brenda, will take care of all the logistics and purchasing. They just need more adults in the room to help them wrangle the children. Another task they can use help with is getting the food ready to serve. They are hoping to get one person (or team of people) to oversee all for the food preparation. They will provide the food and get it to the hotel; just need to have someone take charge of heating things up while we work with the activities. Food preparation is simple, but it does currently take one of us out of the mix of supervising the kids. Questions\comments\concerns about the aforementioned? Please contact Retention Director, PGK Michael Colbourne either in-person, (michael_colbourne@yahoo.com) or phone ( ). 6
