1 St. Pat s Knightly News Knights of Columbus St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Council #14155 Newsletter February 2015 Council Information The Council meets on the first and third Mondays of the month. We begin with the Rosary at 6:45 PM and the meetings start at 7:00 PM in the Crites Room of the Holy Family Center. The first meeting of the month is scheduled as the Business Meeting night, whereas the third Monday of the month is more of a Social Night. We hope to have plans for the Social Night planned in advance. From Grand Knight Rob Malone Well, here we are in the month of February. I certainly hope that everyone is staying warm. We should make sure, all our brothers and sisters are safe during these very cold days and nights. On a note concerning our Parish, we will bid a farewell to our Pastor, Rev. Dennis Walsh this month, as he has accepted the Pastor position in Delphos. We wish him much success and happiness in his new assignment. May God s Blessings go with him and be with him in his time of transition. Thank you Father, for the work you shared with our Council. In light of the above mentioned, our Pancake Breakfast for February, will be canceled. We will work on setting another date when our Officers meet. I was very pleased to see so many of our Council members at our Fraternal Benefits night. Wayne Vreeland presented a very good program, outlining all of the services provided by the Knights of Columbus Insurance. Many of our membership were surprised to hear of the new programs they have to offer to members. Some members even found, they could get more for their dollar by switching coverage options to Knights of Columbus Insurance. A very special Thank You goes out to Wayne, for his time and energetic presentation. Thanks to all who helped with the basketball Free-throw contest. You and your help, continue to make this a very successful program for our Council. We are rapidly approaching the time when Officer Nominations are to be made. If you are interested in running for an office, please notify one of our Trustees. They will be getting together to assemble a slate of candidates, to be announce during our April meeting. Voting will take place in May, this year. Isn t it time for you to take a look and make the commitment to get more involved? On February 20 th, the Bishop Hoffman Assembly of the Fourth Degree, will be hosting an Open House for prospective members. This will be a very informative night and will prove to be a fun evening. All members of the Third Degree are invited (along with your wife) to attend and enjoy a night of fun comradery. One thing you need to remember, if thinking of joining. If you join the Fourth Degree, you do not have to become an Honor Guard member. So Come on out and find out what it s all about.

2 Grand Knight Rob Malone continued Have a good February, everyone. Let us not forget about the 14 th of the month. We must do our part to make it a great day for the ones we Love. They are the ones who work with us to make us successful, while requiring very little, in return. Let s also remember to BE KIND TO ONE ANOTHER. Vivat Jesus! Ladies Auxiliary KC - ettes by Pam Malone February is here and that means it is the middle of winter. The word February in many different languages translates to snow, ice and frost. But there is hope for spring time coming. Have you noticed that the daylight hours are longer? And February is the shortest month of the year! It is also a busy month. Ground Hog Day, President s Day, Black History Month, Valentine s Day, Super Bowl and the 18 th is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten Season. I don t know if there is any correlation between the purple birthstone Amethyst and the purple vestments of Lent, but the stone symbolizes piety, humility, Spiritual wisdom and Sincerity which are all appropriate qualities for our Lenten Sojourn. I recently attended the Outreach committee meeting here at St. Pat s. They seem to be the center hub for activities and needs of our parish. They are very organized and there is a representative from each of all of the various organizations here at St. Pat s. It s a good place for us to have a representative. Recently they organized a coat drive that one of our ladies helped with. Besides being an annual event, there were calls from various organizations for assistance with winter coats and this answered their need. Hundreds of coats were collected, sorted, cleaned if needed and made available to these organizations. The men s Pancake Breakfast originally scheduled for the 15 th of this month, has been postponed. There will be a reception held for Father Walsh on that day. As you know, Fr. Walsh will be leaving us to serve 2 parishes in Delphos area. Fr. Ritter will be available to us until a new assignment is made by the Bishop in July. Keep Fr. Walsh and all priests in our prayers. Happy Birthday and Congratulations Happy Birthday and Congratulations to these people celebrating a special day this month! 3 Field Agent s Report for February 2015 Plan for this Tax Day and into the Future April 15 (Tax Day) is right around the corner. It s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a taxsavings vehicle. Perhaps someone has tried to convince you to open an account, touting the rate of interest that money in one of these accounts can earn. Let me join the chorus of folks encouraging you to open or add funds to an annuity, but for a different reason. Certainly, contributing money to a Knights of Columbus annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. Our annuities do pay a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. Opening or adding to an annuity for these reasons, however, strikes me as taking a short-term view of a product that is designed to provide long-term security. How much security? How does retirement income that you cannot outlive guaranteed sound to you? Here at the Knights of Columbus, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $3000. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into that annuity over time can guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. That guarantee along with the fact that no one has ever lost money left in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember absolute safety of principal) really will provide you with peace of mind. I am happy to meet with you at your convenience and in your home to explain in detail the benefits of opening a Knights of Columbus annuity, along with the benefits of our top-rated life insurance, disability income and long-term care insurance plans. As your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, I look forward to helping us grow in fraternity in any way that I can. I m at or wayne.vreeland@kofc.org. Call me let s talk. Wayne Vreeland, FIC Field Agent KofC wayne.vreeland@kofc.org We make an impact in the lives of those we serve, Knights Families! By: 1. Protecting the innocent when someone dies prematurely-life Insurance 2. Providing an income you can t outlive-retirement Planning 3. Protecting assets when someone can no longer care for themselves-long Term Care 4. Providing an income when someone can t work due to health reasons. -Disability Income Insurance. K of C Council Golf Shirts & Jackets Golf shirts can still be ordered through PGK Ray Darr. All sizes are available. They are green with beige trim with the K of C emblem with St. Pats Council on the left breast and your name on the right. These shirts are embroidered, not silk-screened. We also have St. Pat s jackets in True Hunter/True Navy in all sizes. Several men and women have already received the first shipment. The jackets have a lightweight fleece lining and are great for Fall and Spring. With a sweater or sweatshirt they can also be worn in all but the coldest temperatures. Prices will be adjusted slightly upwards for shipping on single order items.

4 Have you Considered Joining the Fourth Degree? There are 23 men from St. Pat s who have taken the final step of Knighthood and became a 4 th Degree Knight. The 4 th Degree is the Patriotic Degree of the Order. Those are the guys you often see with the colored capes and hats at Confirmations. Not every member of the 4 th Degree elects to be part of the Honor Guard. Our main job is to promote Patriotism. The next opportunity to join the 4 th Degree is the Exemplification on April 11, 2015 at the Holiday Inn French Quarter, Perrysburg. Would you like more information about the Fourth Degree? Talk to Ray Darr, Jim Szymanski, Rob Malone, Greg Wissinger, or Rob Gilsdorf for more information. Come to the OPEN HOUSE on Friday, February 20, 7:00 PM at the Cathedral to hear more about your opportunities and why you should consider joining. A Word from our Family Director Rob Gilsdorf As we move into a New Year and everyone has made all kinds of New Year resolutions, i.e.: lose some weight, stop smoking, get fit, etc., etc. I would hope that you have made one to become more involved with the Knights of Columbus. By helping the Knights in our many projects you not only help the Knight but you also help the Church and the community. One of the projects that we have going is the reading with the first grade class at St. Pats. This is a very rewarding project. The first grade teacher can t say enough about how much this benefits the children. It only takes a couple of hours of your time, and to sit and listen to the children read is very rewarding. After all the children are our future. Who knows, by helping these children some day they will remember that a Knight helped them and maybe they will join the Knights to help someone else. Come to the next business meeting and learn more about this project and all the other projects that we have going. Come meet our Seminarians We have planned a night with our seminarians, David Kidd and Austin Ammanniti, who will be ordained Deacons in May. They will be talking about their experiences while in Rome and as they have been serving in two parishes in the Diocese. They will also be talking about vocations to the priesthood and the need for priests. The program will start at 7:00 PM in the large room of the Holy Family Center. The whole Parish is invited. In the afternoon they will be talking to the grade students from St. Pat s. The principal, Deb O Shea said that she is very excited about having the seminarians talk. Brother Knights and Ladies, let s have a large turnout for this presentation for these men who we have supported both financially and spiritually for several years who will be future priests in our Diocese, perhaps at St. Pat s. Join the Knights of Columbus and their families for a night of fun and entertainment at a Village Players (on Upton) for their production of CLUE. This is a musical mystery based on the game and involving audience participation. The date is Friday, May 15 with the show starting at 8:00 PM. Normal ticket prices are $18 but we have secured a ticket price of $15 if purchased in advance. Contact Paul Palmisano ( ) or one of the Trustees for tickets. GREAT FUN! GREAT FELLOWSHIP!

Because some of the data I have on each member (ladies birth year will NEVER be published nor are other years) everyone was sent a sheet with the data I have on file. Please send this sheet back to me and make any corrections. We would like to list all ladies birthdays and your anniversary. All the cards are printed and ready to send back to you. Please make my job easier by sending your payment back in a timely manner. I made it easy by even giving you a self-addressed return envelope. To date I have received 60% of payments. You will note that every member was billed $5 for Gimme 5 which is for our Measure Up campaign for those with developmental disabilities. You were also billed $2 for the Culture of Life Fund. Both of these assessments are voluntary but we hope that everyone will pay them.
