Azem, M.A. UNH Survey Center 603/ DURHAM, NH President Barack Obama s favorability and job approval remain at all-time lows in the Granite State. Half of New Hampshire residents still disapprove of the Affordable Care Act. These findings are based on the latest WMUR Granite State Poll, conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. Six hundred and eighty-one (681) randomly selected New Hampshire adults were interviewed by landline and cellular telephone between September 29 and October 5, The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 3.8 percent. Presidential Approval President Obama s overall job approval rating continues to be at a record low in New Hampshire. Currently, only 38% of New Hampshire adults say they approve of the job Obama is doing as president, 55% disapprove, and 7% are neutral. Obama s approval ratings are similar to George W. 2 Obama continues to have high approval ratings among Democrats (73%), but this has been declining in recent months. Obama is currently viewed favorably by only 40% of New Hampshire adults, 53% have an unfavorable opinion of him, and 6% are neutral or don t know enough about him to say. Obama s net favorability rating, the percentage having a favorable opinion minus the percentage having an unfavorable opinion, is -13% down from +2% in July. 3 Health Care Reform Obama s signature legislative achievement, the Affordable Care Act, remains unpopular with Granite Staters. 4 Economic Approval Rating Granite Staters continue to disapprove of Obama s handling of the economy. Only 42% of New Hampshire adults approve of how Obama is handling the economy, 52% disapprove, and 6% are neutral. In the most recent Granite State Poll, only 34% of New Hampshire adults say they approve of how President Obama is handling foreign affairs, 61% disapprove, and 5% are neutral. The percentage of New Hampshire adults who disapprove of Obama s handling of foreign affairs has increased significantly, by 9 percentage points, since July. The same partisan divisions that characterize other ratings of the administration exist in evaluations of the administration s handling of foreign affairs -- 67% of Democrats, 29% of Independents and only 5% of Republicans approve of Obama s handling of foreign affairs. Among likely voters, 36% approve of the administration s handling of foreign affairs while 62% disapprove. 5 Right Direction Wrong Track New Hampshire residents remain pessimistic about the direction the country is headed. Currently, only 36% of New Hampshire adults think things in this country are generally going in the right direction, 58% think things are seriously off on the wrong track, and 6% are unsure. This rating has remained stable since January. 6 Granite State Poll Methodology These findings are based on the latest WMUR Granite State Poll, conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. Six hundred and eighty-one (681) randomly selected New Hampshire adults were interviewed by landline and cellular telephone between September 29 and October 5, The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 3.8 percent. The data have been weighted to adjust for numbers of adults and telephone lines within households, respondent sex, age, and region of the state. In addition to potential sampling error, all surveys have other potential sources of non-sampling error including question order effects, question wording effects, and non-response.
