Azem, M.A. UNH Survey Center 603/ DURHAM, NH President Barack Obama s favorability and job approval ratings remain at low levels. Perceptions of the administration s handling of the economy and foreign affairs remain low, and most Granite Staters think the country is headed in the wrong direction. These findings are based on the latest WMUR Granite State Poll, conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. Five hundred and nine (509) randomly selected New Hampshire adults were interviewed by landline and cellular telephone between February 5 and February 12, The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 4.3 percent. Presidential Approval President Obama s overall job approval rating has declined since he was reelected in 2012 and still remains low in New Hampshire. Currently, only 42% of New Hampshire adults say they approve of the job Obama is doing as president, 53% disapprove, and 5% are neutral. However Obama s popularity, which will likely be a key factor in the 2016 presidential election, is significantly better than George W. Obama is currently viewed favorably by only 42% of New Hampshire adults, 49% have an unfavorable opinion of him, and 9% are neutral or don t know enough about him to say. Obama s net favorability rating, the percentage having a favorable opinion minus the percentage having an unfavorable opinion, is -7%, which is up from -13% in October. 3 Health Care Reform Obama s signature legislative achievement, the Affordable Care Act, remains unpopular with Granite Staters. 4 Economic Approval Rating Despite some signs that the economy is rebounding, Granite Staters continue to disapprove of Obama s handling of the economy. Only 46% of New Hampshire adults approve of how Obama is handling the economy, 50% disapprove, and 4% are neutral. In the most recent Granite State Poll, only 38% of New Hampshire adults say they approve of how President Obama is handling foreign affairs, 57% disapprove, and 6% are neutral. The same partisan divisions that characterize other ratings of the administration exist in evaluations of the administration s handling of foreign affairs -- 76% of Democrats, 25% of Independents and only 9% of Republicans approve of Obama s handling of foreign affairs. 5 Right Direction Wrong Track New Hampshire residents remain pessimistic about the direction the country is headed, although recently these numbers have been on the rise. Currently, only of New Hampshire adults think things in this country are generally going in the right direction, 57% think things are seriously off on the wrong track, and 4% are unsure. 6 Granite State Poll Methodology These findings are based on the latest WMUR Granite State Poll, conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. Five hundred and nine (509) randomly selected New Hampshire adults were interviewed by landline and cellular telephone between February 5 and February 12, The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 4.3 percent. The data have been weighted to adjust for numbers of adults and telephone lines within households, respondent sex, age, and region of the state. In addition to potential sampling error, all surveys have other potential sources of non-sampling error including question order effects, question wording effects, and non-response.
