2 From the Principal s Desk Dear West Gates Families, Happy Spring! I am sure you will agree that we are thrilled to welcome the warm weather! I would like to thank the PTA s Arts and Education Committee for the programs they have brought into our school the past few months. They were all excellent events that supported our curriculum, engaged the students in their learning and most of all were fun. Please take the time to ask your children about these programs, as many of our students volunteered to be a part of the performances. I would also like to say thank you to the students and the parents who donated to our Coin A-Day Challenge during our Book Fair Week. Congratulations to Mrs. Hennig s second grade class for raising $ They will be celebrating with a Pizza Party compliments of our PTA. Thank you, again, for supporting our literacy initiatives. I would like to thank everyone for their very generous donations to Jump Rope for Heart again this year. Jump Rope for Heart has always been a huge event at West Gates. Last year, we were able to raise $18,000. I am happy to share that this year, we raised $18,349 so far and we are still receiving a few last minute donations. The West Gates students continue to recognize the importance of helping others and do what they can to Pay it Forward! I could not be more proud to be a part of such a compassionate school community. The end of the year is fast approaching and with that, so is the testing season. I recently sent home a letter to the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade parents listing the testing dates. Just a reminder, the assessments will be administered according to the following schedule: Grades 3, 4, 5 ELA April 14, 15, 16 Grades 3, 4, 5 EMA April 22, 23, 24 Also, as the warm weather approaches, I would like to remind everyone of the importance of keeping our students and staff at West Gates safe. Therefore, please remember that there are no pets allowed on school grounds. Signs have been posted around the building reinforcing this rule. Again, this is a health and safety issue. On behalf of the faculty and staff at West Gates, I would like to personally wish everyone an enjoyable Spring Recess. We look forward to seeing you at all the upcoming end-of-the-year events. Respectfully, Donna Smawley Principal
3 West Gates PTA ww.westgatespta.org April 1, 2015 Dear West Gates Families, I m trying not to get my hopes up too much, but I think I saw some flower buds the other day! With any luck Spring will really be coming soon! Will be holding our annual election of officers at tonight s meeting. At our February meeting the Nominating Committee put forth the following slate of officers for the 2015/2016 school year: President Cindy Grabiec 1 st Vice President Denise Alezczyk 2 nd Vice President Karen Garguilo Treasurer Patti Delzatto Recording Secretary Kate Estevez Corresponding Secretary Cindy Mador Council Delegate William McDonald Past President Maria Kalish Principal Donna Smawley There were no additional nominations made at the February meeting, but nominations may still be made from the floor at tonight s meeting, which begins at 7:00pm in the All Purpose Room. If there is someone you would like to nominate for any of the above positions then please be sure to attend this meeting and cast your vote! Our Spring Book Fair was a very successful and enjoyable event, and I would like to thank Denise Alezczyk and all of the other volunteers who made the event such a success! Without all of the dedicated parents and volunteers our PTA would not be able to offer all of the fun and wonderful events that we do for our children. Later this month we will be sending home information on all of the committees that need your help for the upcoming school year. Please consider giving of your time and talents to help us run one or more of our many events. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call Thank you, as always, for your support! Sincerely, Maria Kalish PTA President (631) mkalish@westgatespta.org

6 Cindy and I would like to thank all of the parents that helped set up and prepare for Bongo Night. As usual, the turnout was fantastic and the night was a big success! Please remember to support our local businesses that donated gift certificates and items to be raffled off. A BIG thanks to the Head Class Moms for making the awesome themed baskets! Terrific job!!! It was a very successful night for our PTA. We would also like to thank the Fifth Grade Parents that baked and donated goodies to be sold during the night. Your support is going to help them have a fantastic end of year party. We hope you all enjoyed yourselves! Thanks again for your support! Jess Garvey and Cindy Grabiec Supermarket Bongo
