1 Dartmouth Local s Did You Know? S e p t e m b e r 1, I n s i d e t h i s i s s u e : Labour Day Rally 015 deadlines School Reps Term Rehire Rights Local Rep Retreat October Conference Day Supervision of Students Pre-retirement seminars What is HRRC? Check Your Pay Stub Calendar of Events Contact Information Council Meeting Dates 5 5 At this year s Labour Day rally in Halifax, we had an incredible showing of solidarity from NSTU members. Due to an increased effort to get people to come out this year we had nearly 150 people representing the NSTU when you include teachers and their family members. We marched proudly from Victoria Park to the Halifax Commons. The Halifax Regional Representative Council (HRRC) had approved the purchase of t-shirts last year for this event, which really was a nice touch in terms of visibility for our union. It should be noted that Halifax County President, Meg Ferguson, was the primary organizer for this event and she deserves a lot of credit for the tremendous success. If you didn t make it out this year, maybe we will see you there next September!
2 P a g e deadlines The following deadlines are coming up for funding. Make sure you get your application to the Board office by pm on the deadline. September 8 Out of province conference grant application deadline - In-service promotion grant application deadline October 5 Application deadline for educational leaves of less than one year October 6 Out of province conference grant application deadline - In-service promotion grant application deadline November 19 Course grant application deadline (for courses taken between May 15th-Aug. 1) TERM REHIRE STATUS Please remind any term rehire teacher who may be working in your school as a substitute that jobs are being posted on a weekly basis. Their term rehire rights remain in effect until October 15, 015. School Reps NSTU Reps are a key part of our organization. They help to keep our members informed of what is happening with the NSTU locally, regionally and provincially. It is very important that each school elects/acclaims a Rep at the beginning of the school year. Depending on the size of the school, more than one Rep may be required. Here are the guidelines: Educational sites with up to 5 members 1 Rep Educational sites with 6-50 members Reps Educational sites with over 50 members Reps I look forward to seeing all new and returning Reps at our first meeting on September rd. Local Rep Retreat 015 If you are a new or returning NSTU Rep you are encouraged to attend a retreat on November 0/1 at Oak Island Inn. Reps will attend information sessions about the NSTU and also have opportunities to socialize with other school Reps and members of our Local Executive. Accommodations and meals will be provided. Should the NSTU Rep at your site be unavailable to attend, the Alternate Rep may register. Please register with Mark Savoury(dartmouthlocal@nstu.ca) ASAP.
3 P a g e NSTU Professional Association October Conference Day October, 015 On the fourth Friday in October, NSTU members from around the province are invited to attend professional development conferences organized by our Professional Associations. The wide range of program offerings demonstrates a breadth of curriculum based and other professional development opportunities that are designed to ensure Nova Scotia's students benefit from the latest pedagogical advances. Online conference registrations are now open! Please visit the webpage for further details and links to register. Supervision of Students Please refer to Article 1 in the Teachers Provincial Agreement for more details. Teachers shall not be required to supervise students while the students are on lunch and noon hour break. Teachers shall not be required to supervise students twenty minutes before their classes begin or twenty minutes after their classes end. Pre-Retirement Seminars The Teachers' Provincial, Community College and APSEA agreements allow a teacher in their last five (5) years to register with the Board/Employer for a preretirement seminar. The Union provides a two day seminar from 9:00 a.m. to :00 p.m. each of these days. The topics include the features of the Teachers' Pension Plan; money management in retirement; Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security; Retired Teachers Organizations; wills and estate planning, insurance, service awards and the psychological aspects of retirement. Participants of the seminar also get to meet with the administrator of the Nova Scotia Pension Agency to receive individual information about their pension. NOTE: The Union does not register teachers for the Pre-Retirement Seminars. HRSB has notified principals that the registration deadline for this year is October 7th and it is done through a drop down form available online at myhrsb. Please note that the dates in the last newsletter were incorrect because they were the dates. The dates available according to the HRSB are as follows: November 17 & 18 February & 5 February &
4 P a g e What is HRRC? The Halifax Regional Representative Council (HRRC) is a regional NSTU body that meets regularly to deal with regional issues that affect all three NSTU Locals within the boundaries of HRSB. Each one of the three Locals (Halifax County, Halifax City and Dartmouth) have 5 seats at the HRRC table. The HRRC often organizes information/pd sessions and social events as well. This year, the HRRC members from the Dartmouth Local are: Mark Savoury Chris Doiron Matt Moriarty Adrianne Kelloway Ben Sichel From time to time you may receive memos from me that bear the HRRC logo. This means that this is something being sent out to all NSTU members in the Halifax/ Dartmouth region. Check You Pay Stub! Members are reminded to check their pay stubs to ensure they are being paid accurately and their deductions do not exceed the allotted amount. Any errors should be reported to payroll immediately.
