4 The Fifth Annual LIU Science Fair Saturday, April 08 th, 2017 I. LIU Science Fair Objectives Our main objective at the Lebanese International University (LIU) is to promote students' creativity, critical thinking and research skills. To achieve such an academic and intellectual objective, we at LIU have launched this annual science fair in April We are looking for an equally successful event for the fifth consecutive year around in April This fair is the first and unique educational and communal event to be held in our Bekaa district. II. Fair Place and Time Place Venue Start Time End Time : LIU, Bekaa Campus : Al Qasr Venue : April 08 th, 2017 at 8:00 A.M : April 08 th, 2017 at 17:00 P.M III. Participants All students from both private and public schools in the Bekaa, Zahle and Hasbaya Regions are encouraged to participate: Students from the following school cycles are eligible to participate o KG o Elementary o Intermediate o Secondary Participating students should work in teams of two to four members maximum (groups of more than 4 students are not accepted). 5 IV. School Participation Your school may submit up to 10 projects with one project per category for each cycle. The school is encouraged to send with the participating students, one supervising teacher from each participating cycle. Each school should pay a non-refundable 100,000 L.L. participation fee upon registration of their projects. V. Projects Content and Categories The table below highlights the general content students can base their projects on in addition to the categories under which the projects can be submitted. 6 VI. Nature of the Project Categories Guidelines Booklet VI.1. Research-Based Projects These projects are usually based on a novel question or an area of inquiry that the students are interested in. Students working on such projects should show how they have sought the answers to their questions and then reveal their findings. An example on such a project is students investigating which of the battery brands available in the market provides the most energy and lasts longer. VI.2. Demonstration Model Projects These projects are usually representational in nature. Students working on such projects should design a representational model (can be very simple or very sophisticated) that best explains a specific concept or principle under any of the broad science categories. An example on such a project is an electronic model that shows how meiosis and mitosis take place. VI.3. Invention Projects These projects are usually very creative in nature. Students working on such projects should come up with a whole new idea for an invention or the actual invention itself. Students choosing such projects should be able to demonstrate how their invention would work and whom it would serve. Application Process Timetable Guidelines Booklet All the steps to be followed are highlighted in the "Timetable" Date Time Description Notes March 7 th 10 th, 2017 All schools receive their invitation letters Refer to the Contact info March 20 th :00 PM Deadline for confirming school's participation in person + Payment of fees Only Cash is accepted at the front desk (BLOCK A) March 30 th :00 PM Deadline for Online application Please fill and submit your application Online. All submitted applications will be reviewed by the fair committee. 8:00-10:00 AM Schools and students arrive and projects are setup and coded Every school will be given appropriate space for their projects (ready the day before) 09:30-11:00 PM Opening Ceremony All students, supervisors and attendees gather in Hall of (BLOCK C) 11:00-14:00 PM Judging process Students should be ready to present their projects in their assigned booths. (Their supervisors only are allowed to stay in) Saturday April 8 th :00-15:30 PM Science fair is open to public (parents, friends and media) Students should be ready to present their projects to the visitors. Supervisors are advised to stay with their students. Projects are to be kept in the hall till the end of the ceremony 15:30-16:00 PM Closing Ceremony Prizes and certificates are distributed 17:00 PM Project Dismantling All projects and material are to be removed by students and their school supervisors 6 P a g e L I U S C I E N C E F A I R B E K A A C A M P U S

Online Application Application and project registration forms are now available online Prepare the required information before you start filling the required fields Complete all the fields labelled with an asterisk with the appropriate information Fill a new application for every new project Go to LIU website and then click on Science Fair icon Visit the Science Fair Website Use an active address you check regularly Once you submit your application, a confirmation will be sent to your address If you don t receive a confirmation within 24 hours of you application online, send us an to science.fair@liu.edu.lb IX. Day of the Fair Each participating school should arrive at LIU on April 8 th at 8:00 am or even on Friday May 6 th the afternoon to start the display of their projects. The fair will officially open at 09:30 am. The students should have all their projects and material ready to be displayed, explained and judged by 10 o clock. Each school will be assigned a particular zone with three bulletin boards and 4 tables. The projects will be judged between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm by a team of professionals from the field. Students are encouraged to display their full understanding of the idea they are presenting rather than showing that they have memorized their parts. After 2:00 pm, the exhibition will be open for visitors until 5:00 pm when the closing ceremony ends. Please make sure that your projects are not dismantled before the end of closing ceremony. 9 X. Evaluation Criteria The projects will be evaluated based on: creativity, effectiveness, content and presentation style.
