1 BERLIN (AP) - Expensive stamp A rare stamp portraying movie star Audrey Hepburn smoking sold for euro 67,000 ($93,800) at an auction in Germany on Tuesday. The Schlegel auction house declined to identify the buyer, who was represented by an agent. October Volume XLV, No. 2 Welcome to the first article that will be written as a new monthly column. The subject matter as you may have guessed is the history, personalities and stamp issues of the Nordic ( Norden ) countries which are also better known as Scandinavia. The Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Finland and the postal administrations of Greenland, the Faeroes and Åland all share a common geography and have formed a loose confederation that meets to discuss common concerns and in 1956 the original five countries issued a common stamp design featuring 5 whooping swans. In 1969 to celebrated 50 years of the Norden Associations and the 100 th anniversary of the first Nordic postal treaty they issued a stamp featuring 5 ship motifs taken from 5 different silver coins. A first day cover of all of the stamps is shown below. A minimum bid of euro 30,000 was set for the stamp, of which only five copies are known to exist. Auctioneer Elisabeth Schlegel announced that the stamp which escaped being incinerated by the German government had sold for euro 53,500. After adding commission and sales tax, the total came to euro 67,000. The government in 2001 printed 14 million Audrey Hepburn stamps as part of a series featuring movie stars including Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe and Greta Garbo. The print run was destroyed after Hepburn's son, Sean Ferrer, objected to the cigarette (Continued on page 4) (Continued on page 3) A WORD FROM YOUR EDITOR September has been anything but kind to farmers and their harvesting. With that in mind please remember at Thanksgiving all those who work the land to produce the turkey, ham, potatoes, yams, and pumpkins for your family supper. Canada Post has indicated it issued a whale of a stamp on October 4 th featuring the Blue Whale. My only comment is if you are going to make a $10 stamp, they might as well made it a $12.50 stamp; at least it could be used to cover the registered mail fee on an ordinary envelope. It is an addition to the wildlife series which started with the $1 Loon and the $2 Polar Bear stamps. 3 (Continued from page 1) In 1980 the Nordic countries changed to a theme based issue with each country issuing its own stamps. The stamps were issued approximately ever 3 years. More recently the stamps are issued annual with all 8 countries/postal administrations participating. In 2010, the theme was called Life at the Coast and the individual stamps and the souvenir sheet issued by Finland on March 24 th are shown below. The scene on the souvenir sheet shows a collage of Kotka s Cultural harbour, Maritime Centre Vellamo, the Wooden Boat Centre and the museum ship Tarmo. The stamps are denominated for first class postage. The sheet sells for 1.60 The 2011 theme will be announced when it becomes available. Issues will be shown in the spring as they are issued. Next month, I will write about a Nobel prize winner from Denmark and an article about how being Green may cause stamp collectors some headaches. As always your comments and suggestions are always welcome whether they are positive or negative. You can drop me a line at jsalmi5@shaw.ca or pigeon hole me at one of the WPS or SCC meetings. Crime fiction from Sweden In August Sweden Post issued a booklet of ten stamps picturing writers of crime fiction. The authors names may not be familiar, but you may have heard of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, written by the late Stieg Larsson. In Swedish it is Män som hatar kvinnor, (Men who hate women), and this year has been made into a film. Look for his other two novels, The Girl Who Played with Fire (Flickan som lekte med elden) and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet s Nest. Oct / WPS Buffalo / 3

However, the Finance Ministry had already delivered advance copies of the Hepburn stamps to Deutsche Post for approval. Thirty of those proof copies escaped destruction when an unknown employee pocketed them and used them to send letters postmarked from Berlin. Minutes of the Winnipeg Philatelic Sept. 2, 2010 Al Wingate called the meeting to order at Tonight s guest is Lettie Taylor s husband. Ken Kristjanson has auction catalogues of Bill Langley, if any one is interested, see him. Ken also requests that if you intend to take home your unsold auction items, that you see him first. Robert Zacharias announced that the fall auction will take place Nov. 20, at the Scandinavian Centre, 9.00 am. Until about noon. There is a 12 lot limit for members. The deadline for getting lots to Robert is Oct. 21. Robert has a CD containing Canadian revenue newsletter in adobe format, issues 1-69, for the library. There will be an exhibiting workshop Oct. 24, 1-3 pm at the Scandinavian Centre, upstairs. Al announced that the Canadian Aerophilatelic Society will join us in the Royal of 2013, and will want frames of their own. The Scandinavian Collector s Club will also join us, and will want frames of their own. We estimate there will be 350 frames in all, and many dealers. Sid Kroker announced that the Red River Bourse will next be held Sept. 12, 10 am-5 pm. at the Best Western Charter House Hotel. Gord Turnbull let us know that Ralph Huuk had a minor heart attack but he is recovering well. Bill Pooley announced that next meeting s presentation will be Bill Voort on errors in Canadian stamps. Bob Stanley has membership forms for Royal, BNAPS, Postal History Society, and it is worth joining. Dave Dawes said that the Scandinavian Collector s Club has a Christmas party and all are invited. 5 Minutes of the Winnipeg Philatelic Society Sept. 16, 2010 Russ Thompson called the meeting to order at Thank you to Al Wingate for chairing the last meeting. Al announced that the Canadian Aerophilatelic Society will join us in the Royal of 2013, and will want frames of their own. The Scandinavian Collector s Club will also join us, and will want frames of their own. We estimate there will be 350 frames in all, and many dealers. There will be a show meeting at his house next Thurs, Sept. 23, at 7.00 p. m. There are positions on the Royal committee and about 6 still to fill. We need people to take a leadership role. Bev Barr let us know that the first exchange meeting for the WAG stamp committee will be Oct. 2, 1.30 p.m. at Bev s house. John Salmi as president of the Scandinavian Collector s Club invites all to an open house Wed. Sept. 22, here at the Scandinavian Centre, 7.00 p.m. Ken Kristjanson reminded us that the meeting in Dec. is our charity auction. Start collecting those treasures, baking, etc. and bring them and your significant other Dec. 2. Adj Draw: Diane Malinowsky, Mike Blande, John Salmi, Bert Brady. Tonight s presentation is Bill Voort, on Canadian errors and oddities. (Continued from page 1) this show and we are the host club. The committee has worked over the past year to secure the show and arrange for a suitable venue. We will hold the show at the University of Manitoba and the facilities are great. We are again being joined by the Scandinavian Collectors Club, and they will bring additional vibrancy to the show with many expected to come from the US. As well, the Canadian Aerophilatelic Society will be a part of the show, as they are holding a symposium in conjunction with the show. Their last symposium was five years ago, so we are expecting a large contingent from them. All told, it bodes well for a busy weekend with lots of opportunity to meet new people, learn about new stamp collecting ideas, and shop at a large and comprehensive dealers bourse. The committee will now begin to prepare in earnest so that we may put on a show to be remembered and to do our city and our club proud. I will be putting regular updates in the Buffalo to keep the membership informed of what we are doing. At this time we still need a few more committee members and I will be approaching people to get commitments to fill these portfolios. If anyone would like to participate please approach me and we can discuss what needs to be done. Hopefully the committee will be complete before the next issue and I will list all the people who are taking a leadership role in putting on the show. In addition to serving directly on the committee we will need many of our club members to volunteer, so there will be ample opportunity for each and every one of you to contribute to our success. I would like to thank the executive of the RPSC for awarding us this opportunity to host a national show and I am confident we will reward their trust in us with a great, well planned, well run weekend. Al Wingate, Chairman Royal 2013 Royale Judy Lipsey December is approaching, so is the annual charity auction, check around for those gently used items you don t use anymore that someone else might. Remember to bring your better half out to the auction. Oct / WPS Buffalo / 5

These are the only ones listed for Canada. MICHEL for the Moneyed Collector? by Alf Brooks MICHEL, the German catalogue publisher, has recently issued a catalogue that diverges from what we have come to expect, catalogues that list all the stamps of a country or a region of the world. This is Valuable Stamps of the World. In the Foreword they state: The limit for catalogue inclusion was set at 200 Euros, which means that a stamp set must at least include one stamp in a condition that reaches or exceeds the limit to be entered into the valuable stamps catalogue. They also state that Our mission is to act as a neutral and independent provider of rare stamp market information, in order to promote the market of high quality philatelic items and to promote the auctioneers dealing with these items. Another feature of the catalogue is more interesting. For many issues there are entries for recent auction prices. For instance, for Canada we see such items as VSC#: Seaway invert, sold in 2008 (Spink Shreve Galleries), $10 000US, hammer price only. VSC#: $1 definitive with inverted inscription (Unitrade 1181a), Sold in 2009 (Spink Shreve), $6500US, hammer price only. The online version of the Valuable Stamp Catalogue at has available nearly listed rare philatelic items. The subscription cost for the resource, if you are in to looking at all the items, is Euros a year. This cost includes access to the complete Michel online catalogue. There is a demo version available, which has only 99 of the items available. To illustrate this, let s look at the stamp entries for Canada, Dominion issues; there are not many: 1868/1877: Queen Victoria Definitves (Large Queens), Michel 18-24, Unitrade Oct / WPS Buffalo / 6

7 Buffalo Chips by Alf Brooks Canada-Sweden Joint Issue A recent issue of Canada Post s Details will have told you of this issue featuring sea mammals, and pictured an OFDC with stamps of Canada and Sweden. However, Sweden s OFDC, pictured here, offers the collector more. It shows the pair of stamps common to both countries, but also includes the two additional stamps issued by Sweden. Australian Railways As Canada needs to do, Australia must conquer distances through transportation. In May Australia issued four stamps celebrating Great Railway Journeys. The stamps are based on photographs by Bill Curtsinger, National Geographic Image Collection. They were designed by Martin Mörck, engraved by Lars Sjööblom and printed by Sweden Post. Volcanic Dust In July Iceland Post issued three stamps to commemorate a recent volcano eruption in Eyjafjallajokull. The three stamps are silkscreen printed with very fine-grained trachyandesite ash which fell at Eyjafjallajokull in April. The trachyandesite magma has 60% silica content and comes from a depth of 7 km with a temperature of more than 1100 C when it reaches the glacial ice. The stamps were designed by Borgar Hjorleifur Arnason and Hany Hadaya. I have travelled two of the routes. The Kuranda Scenic Railway runs from Cairns on the east coast into the mountains. More interesting for me was The Ghan; its full route is Top End, (Darwin) south to Adelaide. I travelled from Alice Springs to Adelaide and saw the desert country that, before the railway, was traversed by camels and drivers from Afghanistan, hence the name Ghan. The wild camels in Australia are descended from the original carriers. A third stamp pictures the West Coast Wilderness Railway. The Indian Pacific crosses Australia from east to west and reverse twice a week, Sidney to Perth, 4352 kilometers in sixty-four hours. Part of the journey is the world s longest straight stretch of railway, 478 kilometers across the Nullarbor Plain. Now that s a train trip! Austria to issue it s Day of the Stamp Commemorative at OVEBRIA. The traditional "Day of the Stamp" commemorative, with a surcharge of EUR 1.30 to support organised philately in Austria, is to be launched at the largest federation exhibition of the year, OVEBRIA, where it will be presented to the interested public. The stamp shows in the foreground a modern Austrian Railways Railjet train and the coat of arms of Gmunden, while in the background can be seen the charming town of Gmunden, the venue for OVEBRIA 2010, together with the romantic Lake Castle at Ort, Lake Traunsee and the magnificent mountain landscape that forms the setting for this delightful spot within the Salzkammergut.
